Remarks :
Several loopholes in the system that could be handled a lot more efficiently, and the faculty is extremely negligent towards students who are struggling but are still making an effort and choose to bask in the glory of readymade products. Other than that, it's been a wholesome experience studying at NITK.
Course Curriculum Overview :
It's very raw in terms of material, and extremely thorough in terms of content. The faculty leaves a lot to be desired but the course material and coverage is excellent and the structure of the course is very well designed. The core subjects are taught well, although the availability of the electives remained an issue. The basics taught, however, remains relevant to this day in the professional field.
Placement Experience :
The placement cycle in our college lasts throughout the final academic year. Several internships offer PPOs to students after they have interned at their firm - a full time job after they graduate. Otherwise, there are several firms that offer jobs in final year and the placement is almost a 100%, especially in the IT field.
College Events :
There were cultural fests such as Incident and crescendo that would involve musicians, comedians and the like come to the college and entertain, in addition to sports fests where we could play cricket, football, etc. In addition, there were tech fests like engineer where the students could show off their skills in the technical field, such as robotics, construction, etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is extremely feasible and hardly expensive. The fee per annum would be approximately 50000 rupees per semester, including housing and food. Securing an admission was not particularly expensive either - simply based on merit. The college certainly provides a transparent breakdown of the fee on their site.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
I have not availed any scholarship or education loan. The college did however, offer merit-based and need-based education loans and scholarships.
Campus Life :
Campus Life was excellent. There were several caterers serving food around the clock and a large number of restaurants nearby for the occasional nibble. The sex-ratio was noticeably male-dominant - close to 8:1 in favour of the boys. The labs were well-equipped with state of the art facilities and equipment, in addition to extracurricular facilities like pool, tennis course, cricket field, etc. Only the library could do with a little less academic content and a little more fiction.
Hostel Facilities :
Yes, the hostels were shared between three people in the first year, 2 people in the second year and we were given individual rooms in the third. The rental, including mess food, was approximately 18000 rupees, which was rather reasonable. There was a cooler for water, bath cubicles, western and indian toilets, and all the facilities of a top class hostel.
Alumni/Alumna :
The seniors did engage in the occasional and necessary initiation, but they were extremely helpful when it came to clubs, academics, lending books and academic equipment, and other perks. The college also has a strong alumni network.
Admission :
DASA, SAT 2 scores. I opted for this course because I was clear in my mind that I had to go for a course that was holistic in its nature in terms of understanding software and hardware and this certainly seemed like the most efficient route to it. The admission procedure involved the SAT 2 test, a merit list based on those, and allocation of branches afterward. There was then a collection of certificates and review of grades from high school, which then sealed the admission after the initial payment of the registration fee.
Faculty :
The faculty leaves a lot to be desired in my department. In general, very few of the faculty took classes or questions. Only the assistant professors took classes, and the actual professors were too busy with their research to attend or deliver lectures. It is understood that we will not be spoodfed at this level, but the inability to deliver the basics to the students was rather shocking. Either way, the notes and material delivered was of a decent quality for us to succeed.
