Remarks :
I love my college. I'm not saying it is the perfect one. It has it's own flaws and fallacies but inspite of all that I love my college. The college administration is a little naive and stubborn and the complaints take a lot of time to get settled. But in the end they do get solved.
Course Curriculum Overview :
I'm in my first year and we have not exactly entered into branch subjects. However from my seniors I have come to know that most of the subjects are groomed to provide industry specific knowledge to us. In the present scenario where there is constant change in industrial sector, more change is expected in the curriculum. It has to be more flexible and dynamic. I see my seniors being placed in the on campus placements and hence I believe the curriculum is quite benifitial but as I said not perfect. Except for a tea garden visit, no industrial visit has been organised. As for the exam, there is more emphasis on rote learning than on research and thinking which I think is very negative.
Placement Experience :
The placement scenario in our college is quite good with almost 90% placement taking place in the IT sector. Among the companies visiting our college are Amazon, GoIBIGo, ONGC, Power Grid to name a few. However the placements in the core sector is not quite promising. Very few core companies visit the campus. Most of these companies demand GATE qualifications. Each of the companies have their own screening process for recruitment. In general there is first an aptitude test, followed by a group discussion and finally the personal interview. As per records, more 75% of the students got placed last year. Yes the institute does take steps to prepare the students for the placement season. There is the T&P cell which looks into this.
College Events :
A variety of events are organised by the institute for the overall development of the students. The techno-management festival of the institute is Tecnoesis. It is the second largest techno-management festival in the entire region after IIT's TechNiche. A variety of events including RoboWars, SumoWars, RoboSoccer, etc. are organised during this event. There are also tech expo and Car expo. Pitching and other management events are organised during this days. The cultural fiesta of the college is the Incandescence. Celebrated for 4 days, this event showcases the vibrant colors of the India culture as well as the western culture. There are ramp walks, bands, bolloywood singers, dance competitions, cooking competitions held during these days. The spring fest of the college is the Posua which showcases the regional culture in front of everyone.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee is quite high with 75000 per semester. The mode of payment is online. However for people with low income there are concessions in fee. For people having income between 1lakh and 5 lakh the fee is about Rs.45000 and for the people having income below 1lakh, the fee is about Rs. 9000. Moreover there are concessions for ST and SC students who have to pay about 9000 rupees. These are mere approximations and the actual figures may vary.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
No, I have neither opted for any scholarship nor any educational loan. Yes, the college offers scholarship to ST students. For that one has to be ST. And I'm not quite sure about the other procedures
Campus Life :
The gender ratio is quite low with girl to boy ratio as 1:10. The campus life is quite exciting. Birthdays in the hostels are quite a celebration. There is always the excitement to wish their friend in their special day. Irrespective of ethnicity, race, religion, everyone come forward and give birthday bumps. A variety of workshops are organised by the institute as well as the student union body for the students. The Literary, Publication,Fine Arts Society of the institute is quite active and organizes various events an competitions thouroughout the academic year. This includes Quizzes, Debates, Creative Writing, etc. The institution also pays attention towards the physical development of the students and is equipped with a cricket field, football field, indoor stadium for various games, a student activity center. Students are encouraged and regularly sent to inter NIT competitions and other college competitions.
Hostel Facilities :
Yes, I have opted for hostel which is compulsury in our college. I share my hostel room with a fellow colleague of mine. The rooms are quite room with 24 hours electricity supply. There is a bed, a table and chair, a wardrobe and a balcony in room. The lighting condition is also quite good. The hostel rent is Rs. 15000 per semester.
Alumni/Alumna :
The seniors in our institute are quite helpful and are the first people we go to if there is any problem. There are socities for each branch where the seniors help their juniors in their academics by providing notes and other guidances. I have attended some of the speech given by some of the successful alumni and it has really motivated me to go ahead in the direction I have chosen.
Admission :
I got admission into the college thourough the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE ) Mains. I opted for this course as I felt that there are many opportunities and scopes as an engineer. As for choosing the institute, NIT is an institute of National Importance and a premier one in the state.I got admission thourough the CSAB rounds or special rounds. The portal for selecting the college was opened and there I chose NIT Silchar as my college of desire. Soon the results were out and I got my seat in the Electrical Engineering Department at NIT Silchar. I paid the required fees and headed for Silchar for completing the admission procedure. At NIT, my documents were verified, hostel was alloted and fee was collected. This is my entire admission process
Faculty :
I have 5 subjects and one faculty per subject. Moreover there are research scholars to help the faculties. There are also 4 labs and lab assistants are there for our aid. The faculties here are quite experienced and most of them are young. All of them hold P.hd. degrees from reputed institutes like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, NERIST, IIT Guwahati, etc. However holding a degree and providing knowledge to the students are quite different things, some of the highly qualified faculties aren't able to teach properly and hence most of us have to depend on YouTube for concept clarification. As for industry experience, I'm not quite sure in this regard.
