Remarks :
Positive remarks: The institute is known for its contribution to the mining and petroleum sectors of the country. It definitely stands out in comparison to an average Indian institute and is among the top 15 colleges of the country. Negative remarks: Given its 90 year or so old history, some rules and cultures are obsolete and bizzare. The faculty needs to improve for some courses. Sports also needs some attention from the students.
Course Curriculum Overview :
Since this college is over 90 years old now, the curriculum feels obsolete in certain aspects. But there seem to be changes coming into motion taking the curriculum to more a modern one. Its has a semester system with two semesters in an academic year, from July to November and 2nd from January to April. There are two exams in a single semester, a mid semester and an end semester. Grades are assigned on principles of relative grading, on basis of percentile.
Placement Experience :
Placements are decent, anywhere around 70 to 80 percent each year. Core sectors like electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering etc. seem to struggle a bit. Computer sciences as well as earth science courses have better placement stats. Various companies do offer campus internships for pre-final year students. Stipends depend on the companies themselves.
College Events :
Techno-management event - Concetto Cultural event - Srijan Alumni meet - Basant Inter departmental competitions - Pratibimb and various inter hostel and Departmental events. The events of the college are actually well planned out by a student body, elected prior to the event. The see participation from huge number of colleges, mainly in the eastern part of the country. The technical fest, Concetto has quite a room for improvement though but it seems to be on the right path in recent years.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
On par with most government technical institutes, but certainly a bit expensive. Anywhere around 2.5 lacs per year is absolutely on the more expensive side. But the government does offer scholarships for economically weaker students. Also the institute itself provides fee waiver to candidates they deem eligible. Also, as per the government policies, backward classes see a significant decrease in the fee structure, anywhere from 50 % to 100 % deduction in tuition fees.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Firstly there's MCM ( Merit cum means scholarship ) which provides financial help to economically weak students on the basis of scrutiny of documents submitted. Also there's dean excellent student program which felicitates the topper of each course at the end of each academic year.
Campus Life :
Certainly amongst the best if not the best. The labs have a huge room for improvement, but comparable to other good colleges of the country. Sports have failed to earn the college some glory but the facilities seem to be alright. It needs to get some interest from the students. Cultural activities like Photography, art, Dance, Dramatics are really good and seem to improve each year. Various social activities are also seen throughout the year from 2 separate bodies in the college.
Hostel Facilities :
Its compulsory for students to reside in the hostels provided by the college. The institute has 10 hostels, separate for girls and boys. The infrastructure is not world class but okay when comparing to other colleges. The food provided in the hostels is okay but a nominal fee of 15000 rupees per semester leaves little room to complain.
Alumni/Alumna :
Absolutely, our alumni networks are very strong and they constantly help the college in fund raisers through their respective companies of work. There's also an annual event which is a sort of reunion of a batch of 50 years ago.
Admission :
I got admission in the year 2017 through Joint entrance examination, advance, 17. The process of selection into IITs is very rigorous in which barely 6000 general category students out of 2.5 lacs are successful. Prior to the more advanced exam, there a screening exam, JEE main, held twice in months of January and April. The cutoff is decided on a threshold percentile. The eligible students then appear for the JEE advance in month of may. Various courses are then provided on merit basis.
Faculty :
The faculty in this college is a mix bag. Excellent to novice professors, all are present here. The administrative faculty is decent, and is now working effectively to improve the college each day. The more recent courses to added seem to have larger percentage of less-experienced faculty, like those of computer sciences.
