How is the KJ Somaiya College of Engineering?

RS
Rahul Sawant Posted On : April 19th, 2022
Bachelor of Technology Information Technology, K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (2019)

KJSCE is a decent college and offers ample opportunities to excel academically. After becoming autonomous, the college has introduced dual degree and student exchange programs. Along with your engineering major, you can do a minor in another branch of engineering or in Marketing, Banking, Finance, Industrial Psychology, Languages, etc.

The faculties are cooperative and friendly. Placements are decent. CSE and IT branches receive better placement opportunities compared to the other branches. KJSCE B.Tech placements 2022 reports an average CTC of INR 7.15 LPA and the highest CTC of INR 13.66 LPA.

What is better between an engineering degree from Mumbai University or from any autonomous institute like VJTI, KJ Somaiya or SPIT?

RR
Rupohi Roy Posted On : January 4th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (2019)

You may have confused SPIT (Sardar Patel Institute of Technology) with SPCE (Sardar Patel College of Engineering). SPIT is not an autonomous institute. The courses offered in SPIT are Computers, IT, Electronics, and Electronics and Telecom.

Deciding Factors:

If you are looking for any particular program, then you should narrow down your choice of college based on courses. If you are more college-driven then you should go through the following points to make the right decision.

  • First, you should ask yourself about what do you want out of your engineering degree, whether it is academics, extracurricular, or co-curricular.
  • Also, it depends on your future goals. Whether you want good placements, seek higher education, or go for start-ups.

VJTI:

Considering all the factors, VJTI is the best option.

  • It is an autonomous college with a strong foundation. It also has a broad alumni base.
  • All these factors result in better internship opportunities, better placing companies, and a better network in education.
  • For extracurriculars, most of the engineering colleges in Mumbai offer almost the same opportunities. However, Thandomal, DJSCOE, and RAIT offer mesmerizing events. However, since extracurricular is not the sole factor of consideration, VJTI will be sufficient.

The placement statistics of recent years at VJTI are as follows.

Average CTC

6.8 LPA

Highest CTC

27 LPA

Academics and co-curricular do not depend on the institute only. It is what you make of it. VJTI is the best choice as it provides a good network and exposure.

Preference Order:

The preference order of the institutes other than VJTI is as follows.

  • Placement- SPIT>DJSCOE>KJSCOE
  • Reputation- SPIT>KJSCOE>DJSCOE
  • Academics- SPIT>DJSCOE>KJSCOE
  • Alumni- DJSCOE>KJSCOE>SPIT
  • Extracurricular- DJSCOE>SPIT>KJSCOE

If you get admission to VJTI you should definitely opt for it. You should consider what course you are choosing and research about the facilities and placements. For example, CS at SPIT has better placement than ME at VJTI or any of the other colleges mentioned here.

Also, autonomous colleges have better administration in MU. They have a better examination schedule, quick result release and you will have higher chances of securing a good CGPA.

What is the cutoff for KJ Somaiya Vidyavihar first year engineering? What are the minimum marks in JEE in boards, along with percentile?

SP

Mechanical Engineering at KJ Somaiya (2023)

I have a few friends from KJ Somiya and they gave me some information regarding the required cutoff at the institute.

  • The cut-off was apparently on the higher side in the CAP rounds because the institute was granted autonomy very recently. The state merit rank for the mechanical branch was almost around 500 - 1000.
  • For computer science engineering, the cut-off ranged almost to 1600 - 1800, while it was 3000 - 3500 until CAP-2 with the inclusion of a percentile that was around 96.

It is best that you keep patience until the last counseling round, which is, CAP-3. If you are a general category student then you won’t get selected in CAP-1, you need to wait till the last round or the spot round. Alternatively, you can also go for autonomous colleges instead of university colleges.

Which one is better: the K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering or the Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology?

PC

While choosing an institute the first thing you need to consider is the distance between the institute and your home. Except for this consideration, the overall rankings of these two colleges are quite close to each other But, if you don’t have any issues with traveling daily or staying in the hostel, then consider the following factors in order to choose the right institute.

Infrastructure:

  • Both of these institutes have good infrastructures.
  • You can visit the official websites of these two institutes to understand what type of infrastructural facilities are provided.

Placement:

In this case, your resume matters a lot to get placed in the on-campus recruitment process for both of these institutes. Here is the highlight of recent placement statistics for these two institutes.

Criteria

K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering

Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology

Highest CTC

24 LPA

20-23 LPA

Lowest CTC

6.5 LPA

3.7 LPA

Average CTC

3-3.5 LPA

3-3.5 LPA

Placement Statistics

75-85%

70-80%

University:

  • KJSCE is an autonomous institute, but VESIT is under Mumbai University so the former has an upper hand.
  • This autonomous identity of Kjsce helps to better design academics. Additionally, it allows the college administration to control the entire exam procedure, which is much better than Mumbai University.
  • Besides, the students also get an opportunity to do internships in the reputed MNCs, with a longer vacation. It looks good on the resume.

Sports:

There is no comparison of KJSCE with VESIT, as the previous one has an extraordinary football turf. This institute also has a good badminton court and a running track.

Campus: Except for the campus of IITB, KJSCE probably has the biggest campus in Mumbai.

Both of these are pretty good options so choose according to your convenience.

Which engineering college is better KJ Somaiya or VESIT?

SN
Somiya Nath Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
B.E Computer Engineering, Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology, Mumbai (2020)

While both colleges are reputed, you should compare a few parameters before making a choice. Here are some of them to help you decide.

Teaching:

Every college has good and bad faculties.

  • From what I heard through my friends at VESIT, there are few faculties that struggle with simple math problems. While some faculties from KJS struggle with simple circuits despite being electronics teachers.
  • I also know about faculties at VESIT, who are actively engaged in research projects that are respected nationally. The same goes for KJS.

Don’t expect world-class teaching from either of these colleges. You will also need to figure out a lot of things on your own. You will also be able to figure out a lot of the study material by yourself. It will be better if you find someone, preferably a faculty to clear your doubts.

Management: (Winning Institution - VESIT)

  • As far as management is concerned, KJS recently attained autonomy so things might be a little disorganized there. At KJS you might expect odd exam schedules and late exam starts.
  • VESIT does not have better management but is definitely a little more organized.

Campus Life:

  • VESIT does not have a very big campus. Moreover, a number of technical and non-technical events go on at VESIT, but it is not comparable with KJS.
  • In terms of crowd, KJS has a relatively chill vibe as compared to people from VESIT. But, clubs are much better at VESIT, e.g. CSI and IEEE. However, KJS also has a number of open events that you can participate in as well.

Placement:(VESIT ~ KJS)

For placements, both the institutes are almost on the same page. Here is a peek into the recent placement highlights of the institutes.

Category

VESIT

KJS

Highest CTC

27 LPA

18.75 LPA

Average CTC

5 LPA

5.55 LPA

Major Recruiters

LTI, Capgemini

Microsoft, Jaro Education, PayU, etc.

KJS offers Mechanical Engineering, which VESIT does not. So, if you want to pursue Mechanical, KJS is a clear choice. The environment at VESIT is more suitable for technical things as compared to KJS. So, choose the institute based on what you expect out of your degree.

What are the disadvantages of attending KJ Somaiya College of Engineering?

AG
Aditya Godambe Posted On : April 1st, 2021
Studied at K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (2019)

KJSCE is an amazing institution in terms of academics, placements, and college life. The autonomous status of the college allows it to have a better curriculum as compared to Mumbai University and makes it comparable to the curriculum of the likes of VJTI. Some of the advantages that you might experience here are:

  1. The length of these papers is around 100 marks, in general as compared to the exams of MU which are 80 marks. The exam structure is very hectic. Sometimes, the students get only one-week of preparatory leave. The students get a gap of just one or two days between two exams. The faculty members are good but they aren’t able to complete the syllabus on time.
  2. Being a Gujrati minority college, it is an all-vegetarian campus (This might be a disadvantage only if you are a non-vegetarian.
  3. The college is not air-conditioned.

You will thoroughly enjoy the 4 years of your graduation and meet some amazing people and make great friends over here.

Yes, KJSCE is a good college for IT. You can also consider taking CSE here. Since the syllabus for these two branches differs by a few subjects.

  • KJ Somiya is an autonomous institute, so it has a good curriculum. You will have the option to choose from a number of interdisciplinary as well as audit courses.
  • The placement of IT and CSE branches are quite good.
  • From my experience, the faculty is also quite well versed, cooperative and good.
  • If you are concerned about labs, they are very well equipped with good computers. One of them even has an iMac.
  • Additionally, if you are interested in workshops, councils like CSI and CodeChef conduct them on various technologies and coding which you will find very helpful.
  • If you get along with the faculty, you will also have a number of projects that you could work on.

Overall, KJSCE for IT is a good option. You will have a number of opportunities open for you to develop your career here.

Which college among KJ Somaiya, FORE, IMI Delhi, LBSIM is better and sort them in the priority order?

RM
Rutul Mishra Posted On : April 12th, 2022
studied Post Graduate Diploma in Management at Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, New Delhi (2021)

IMI Delhi is the best option among the mentioned institute. It offers good academics and placement opportunities. IMI Delhi placements 2022 had an average CTC of INR 15.23 LPA and the highest CTC was INR 32 LPA.

The rest of the institutes are almost at par in terms of opportunities. KJ Somiya offers better campus life and peer learning opportunities, comparably.

In terms of placements, LBSIM and FORE are almost the same. However, FORE changes around 30-40% more than LBSIM.

Going by the statistics, your preference order should be - IMI Delhi > KJ Somaiya > FORE ~ LBSIM.

What exactly happens in the institutional quota in KJ Somaiya College of Engineering and DJ Sanghvi?

SG
Sudipta Ghose Posted On : September 4th, 2021
B.Tech from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (2020)

A few years back, one of my friends took admission at KJ Somaiya via the ILS quota in the department of Mechanical Engineering. There were around 12 seats available. The fee was the same for everyone, irrespective of the quota.

He filled up a form on the college’s website and a merit list came out based on their CET marks. My friend’s merit number was in the 70s. If you want admission, you will have to be physically present on the day of counseling along with the fee. They were called for admission based on their merit number. The number of seats available was displayed on an LCD for all the branches. As people took admission, it got updated. When your number is called, you will have to go to the table and select your branch.

This was the process followed a few years back. However, I do not think that there has been any change in the process.

How is life in KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, especially in the mechanical branch?

RG
Rajesh Gupta Posted On : January 6th, 2023
Studied at Somaiya Vidyavihar

KJ Somaiya College of Engineering is simply amazing, with the best campus and faculty. Excellent football field, badminton court, table tennis, carrom, and so on. Simple to reach. The canteen is reasonably priced and serves delicious food. Every event over there will be enjoyable for you.

Because your branch is mechanical, the crowd may differ, but all of the students there come from good families. Because of the cutoff, the Mechanical crowd is generally smarter than other branches.

There are many things you can do with your studies, such as joining a team that builds something. Orion Racing creates race cars, Redshift Racing creates ATVs, Onyx creates aircraft, and Team Eta creates fuel-efficient vehicles. You can also create your own project if you don't want to join anything.
