The admission process followed by IIT Kanpur is similar to the admission process followed by all the other IITs. The main thing that you need to keep in mind is that in India to take admission in most of the colleges, appearing for GATE Examination is mandatory. Similarly, for IIT Kanpur as well to take admission to MTech, you will have to appear for the GATE examination and secure a high rank to be eligible for counseling. You will need to qualify the GATE examination and register at COAP for admission in the course. Try to secure a high rank as the competition is very high and seats for MTech in the IITs is limited. So, only the top-ranking students get the chance to study at IIT Kanpur every year. If you want to be one of them, then study hard.

The GATE cutoff for M.Tech admissions at IIT Mandi has not been released yet for 2024. But here’s the expected cutoff list based on the previous year trends.

Thus, a general candidate can expect admission to IIT Mandi in 2024 for their M.Tech degree if they get a GATE rank in the range of 15839-15843. The actual cutoff for M.Tech at IIT Mandi will be released during the COAP counselling process.

I completed my MTech in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kanpur. IITK offers MTech in 15 specializations with CSE, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and biological sciences being the top ones. As per the NIRF 2023 Ranking, IIT Kanpur is ranked #4 for Engineering, and #1 for Innovation among Indian colleges/universities. IITK is also ranked #3 Overall by India Today 2023 Ranking. 

A good number of core companies visit the Aerospace department for M.Tech placements like Airbus, Mercedes Benz, John Deere, Caterpillar, among others. Other than that, students of Aerospace Engineering can sit for Analytical and Software companies if interested. 

The benefit is that these companies provide better packages than the core companies. ISRO, DRDO and other Indian Aeronautical Engineering firms prefer MTech students over BTech during the IIT Kanpur placements because their work requires a specialized knowledge of the field.

As per the M.Tech placement 2023 data released by DoMS, IIT Kanpur, the batch recorded 100% placements (i.e. all 18 students were successfully placed). The highest CTC offered was INR 27 LPA, the top 30% students received an average CTC of INR 23 LPA, the median CTC was INR 15.38 LPA, and the average CTC was INR 16.9 LPA.

IIT Kanpur MTech program offers good academic and research facilities, along with good placement opportunities. The MTech faculty members are experts in their respective fields and support innovative ideas from the students’ side.

Overall, IIT Kanpur is a good choice for an MTech. However, the faculty, curriculum, and placement details will depend a lot on which specialization you are particularly interested in.
