Which is better, IIT Roorkee CS or IIT Delhi mathematics and computing (4 years)?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Both programs are equally good in their respective fields and so are the institutions offering the programs. It’s important to consider what you expect from the program and what you plan to achieve after graduation to make the right choice.

My sister was in a similar dilemma as yours and eventually, she opted for MCA from IIT Delhi. This program has many courses similar to CS but the only problem is, the pedagogy adopted has a more theoretical approach than practical. Moreover, at some point, you will start questioning the parity of the faculty and will have to resort to self-study.

But here is the bright side, most companies coming for CS placements consider MCA students too, and offer decent roles.

Although I am not well aware of the situation in Roorkee, I can guarantee a true coding lover will prefer CS to MCA any day.

What should I choose: NITK CSE or IIIT Hyderabad CSE?

DS
Divya Saraf Posted On : July 28th, 2023
Lives in Hyderabad

The decision of choosing one between NITK CSE and IIIT Hyderabad CSE depends on what kind of college life you are looking for. To be frank, if you want a dynamic campus life with an equally good but light curriculum, NIT Surathkal is better than IIIT Hyderabad because the matter has a very rigid campus life that focuses entirely on academics. NIT Surathkal will give you a huge baggage of memories, a good job, and some good connections. But IIIT Hyderabad will help you become a person of responsibility whose only focus is building a career.

NIT Surathkal brings you together with people from all corners of the country which makes the experience better. IIIT Hyderabad on the other hand has only two branches - CSE and ECE. So the former may not make you a very talented CS engineer but will surely develop your personality as a whole.

So the best way to decide is to analyze your inclination, and then make an informed decision.

Is the CSE department in NIT Hamirpur worth it?

YV
Yash Verma Posted On : September 13th, 2023
B.Tech CSE, NIT Hamirpur (2019)

The CSE department at NIT Hamirpur has its own pros and cons. I have listed a few to answer your question

Pros

  • The CSE department of NIT Hamirpur has some exceptionally good faculty members. Their teaching styles are unique.
  • The curriculum of this department is one of the best. A few courses are so profound that CS students of this college have an upper hand when talking to other CS grads.
  • Students are taught diverse courses like AI, Data Mining, Agent-Based Systems, OS, Networks, Advanced Architecture, etc

Cons

  • The number of faculty members is low and the majority of them are not interested in teaching.
  • Not many CS companies visit the campus for placements and most companies from the IT sector visit.
  • Students aren’t offered any kind of industrial exposure.
  • There aren’t any student projects, and only bookish knowledge is given preference.

However, being a CSE student at NIT Hamirpur is certainly a privilege given the fact that they have the maximum free time and also the best placement record.

So weigh the pros and cons against your own preferences and make a wise decision.

How much marks are needed for OBC category in JEE (Advance) to get CSE in IIT Delhi?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Never target a fixed score if you are planning to clear JEE because the level of difficulty of the exam varies every year. The closing rank of an OBC candidate is 340 for the CSE branch at IIT Delhi. So, on a rough estimate, a score of around 230 might get you into CSE as an OBC student. However, you wouldn’t limit your capabilities to your branch but give your best.

What's it like to study Computer Science Engineering at BITS Pilani, Pilani campus?

NB
Nishchay Bhalla Posted On : June 28th, 2023
studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2018)

Studying Computer Science Engineering at BITS Pilani is a unique experience in itself. The well-structured curriculum combined with an excellent academic environment will give you an experience of its own kind. Additionally, the qualified faculty and superior quality of students crowd to add to the overall learning experience.

Let’s consider these factors individually for better understanding.

Curriculum

  • Focuses a lot on theoretical knowledge in courses like OOP, Logic in CS, Database Systems, and DSA.
  • The curriculum needs to get updated since it still lacks languages like SML, Haskell, and Javascript.
  • Discrete Math is extensive making it beneficial for Math + CS students.

Academic Environment

  • The semesters have a number of courses and the workload is high.
  • There are too many assignments, quizzes, lab tests, etc which challenge some to become better while demotivating many.
  • Students here are trained to work smarter, not harder
  • BITS Pilani has no such coding culture so you can minimize your expectations in that aspect.

Peer Group

  • The quality of the peer group is what makes life at BITS vibrant and dynamic.
  • Students with diverse backgrounds, interests, and talents study in one room enhancing the experience.
  • The own common factor that brings the peer pool together is the interest in problem-solving, interest in programming, logical thinking, and commitment to stay up late and work.
  • There is tough competition among the students thus challenging the students to work hard.

Faculty

  • The faculty is approachable if you want to clear some doubts
  • A few faculty members might be a bit straightforward

Overall, BITS Pilani CSE will be an excellent experience.

What is the quality of students who take up CSE in KIIT?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : July 26th, 2023
KIIT Bhubaneshwar

I am a CSE student at KIIT. In my batch, there is a 10-pointer as well as a 7.5-pointer. I myself scored 9.31 in my first sem. I scored 85% in AISSCE but there are also students in my class who scored above 90%.

During our KIIT counseling, we were to be allotted our branches based on our ranks in the KIITEE. CSE seats were filled quickly. This is because the first preference of students is CSE, then EE, and then come the other branches like Mechanical, Civil, and others. The best rank holders in KIITEE choose the CSE branch.

CSE students at KIIT are not only good at their studies, but they are also very active in extracurriculars. The CSE department hosts great freshers’ parties and CSE has a good share of coordinators in fests and other events.

Overall, CSE students in KIIT are hardworking individuals who perform well not only in studies but also in other extracurricular activities.

How is CSE at DTU?

TS
Tanya Sharma Posted On : July 4th, 2023
Studied at Delhi Technological university

The CSE branch at DTU is highly regarded for its curriculum and placements. Here is what you should consider

  • Placements: Students who are proficient in Data Structures, Algorithms, and CS subjects receive plenty of opportunities. IT giants like Google, and Cure.Fit, Sprinklr, etc visit the campus both for internships and placements. Although the chances of CS students getting placed are high, DTU still hasn’t been able to achieve the 100% placement mark.
  • Campus and hostel facilities: DTU does not have very good accommodation facilities and Delhi residents are not even offered hostels. You can find a PG nearby but that won’t give you the hostel life experience offered by other colleges.
  • Course Subjects and Faculty: Unlike IITs, not all professors are highly qualified and learned. Some deliver lectures just for the sake of it. However, the relative basis marking here makes things easier so you can maintain a decent CGPA throughout.
  • Computer Science Management: Like any other government institute the administration here is lethargic and matters are processed at a slow pace.

Ultimately, DTU should be your choice only if your goal is to get placed after enjoying good college life. But if you are a research enthusiast and want to pursue MS or Ph.D. in the future, then consider joining IIITD or NSUT instead.
