I did my M.Tech Civil from VNIT Nagpur. Thus, I can highlight the placement scenario for my specialization (i.e. Transportation Engineering)-
The companies that recruit from VNIT include- AARVEE Associate, LnT ECC, Spectrum Techno Consultants Pvt Ltd, Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Onnyx Electronics, JMC Project Ltd, L and T Infra, WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff, Bajaj Reinforcement LLP, etc.
Apart from this, some educational institutes also visit for recruitments. These are- S R Patel College of Engineering, Sandip University and Sandip Foundation, BASE Educational Services Pvt Ltd, Adyant Education Pvt. Ltd, Franchises of Aakash Educational Services Pvt Ltd, Avanti Fellows, A.R.M.I.E.T. Thane, Ballarpur Institute of Technology (BIT), PT Education, and Sharda Group of Institutions.
Around 80% students are placed, both on campus and off campus. This includes those who crack government exams, or are appointed as assistant professors. Some students opt for higher studies, while some obtain a CGPA< 6.75. Both of those aren’t included in these placement stats.
The placements are decent for M.Tech Civil at VNIT Nagpur. The college workload is quite manageable. This allows students to prepare for and crack government exams.
IIT Delhi's Civil Engineering department has a total of 7 branches namely
The ones that I will recommend you not to join include - Structural, Geotechnical, Transport, and Water Resources. This is because you are planning to prepare for ESE which won’t be possible because of the demanding and rigorous curriculum of these branches.
Construction Engineering and Management is a good choice as the coursework is light in comparison to others. Rock Engineering is another good option but the future scope is limited because it’s not a major branch of Civil Engineering.
The most common choice among aspirants is Environmental Engineering with the least burden and great opportunities.
To know how the Civil branch at NIT Jalandhar is, we need to consider 3 factors:
Academic: The theoretical subjects are well taught by top notch faculty. The labs are however not in very good condition here.
Internships: There are not great internship opportunities here. Students themselves are not interested in spending their summers at the site.
Placements: L&T is the major recruiter in private companies for civil engineers .For public jobs you need to appear for GATE for PSUs. If you have completed any internship, then placements will be very easy for you.
All in all NIT Jalandhar is a great choice to pursue Civil Engineering.
NIT Hamirpur B.Tech Civil Engineering department lacks a research environment and proper lab facilities for both UG and PG programs. As far as academics are concerned, the department is ahead of many NITs. However, the infrastructure and teaching methodology are not in line with new-age requirements. Even the placement scenario for M.Tech Civil at NIT Hamirpur isn't good.
In comparison to other branches, the Department of Environmental Engineering and Energy Resources has better research facilities. For an M.Tech in Civil Engineering, I would like you to try these institutions - IIT Roorkee, BITS, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, NIT Allahabad, and NIT Delhi.
NIT Hamirpur isn’t the best choice for an M.Tech Civil program.
It is not that NIT Rourkela placement cell does not allow Civil Engineering students to sit for CSE placements. The thing is that most software companies that visit the campuses with SDE roles do not allow other branches to sit for their placements. I assume by CSE placements you are referring to IT companies.
Certain top companies like Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs and Mathworks allow students from all the branches to sit for their placements. But for most software companies, branch is one of the criteria to filter out those students who can apply. Also, they mostly prefer students from CSE and circuital branches like EI, EC and EE.
The reason being that students from these branches work with codes more often and are well-versed in programming languages. The same is imperative for working in IT companies. However, it is also true that many students in other branches love to code and wish to work in these IT firms.
NIT Rourkela has no control over the criteria set by various IT companies and you will have to check the same before planning to sit for the placement of any IT firm.
IIT Madras is ranked among the top 50 colleges in the world for civil and structural engineering courses. It is the only institution where the average salary of the CE branch is better than the average across all branches. This could be because one student of IIT Madras was placed at a salary of INR 52.50 lakh – the highest salary for any Civil Engineering student.
Placements for all the branches at IITs in general and IIT madras, in particular, are the same except for CS and EE. This is because most students of branches other than these two end up taking non-core jobs like finance, analytics, software, consulting, and management because they offer a better package than core jobs. On the other hand, CS and EE students get excellent offers from many software companies thereby offering better roles.
The average salary of CS, EE, and other branches at IIT Madras is given below
Branch |
Average Salary |
CSE |
INR 41.72 LPA |
ECE |
INR 24.4 LPA |
Other Branches |
INR 33.06 LPA |
IIT Guwahati has better faculty than IIT BHU in the civil engineering department. IIT BHU has poor faculty; the professors lack the ability to communicate the concepts clearly to the students, and they do not have sufficient knowledge of the core subject, especially in the civil engineering department. They have been trying to give better classes to the students in recent years. But if you get the choice to select any of these two institutions in civil engineering, you can surely opt for IIT Guwahati.
Honestly speaking, this internet-controlled era hardly requires good teachers as everything is available on the net. You can get in touch with internationally proclaimed professors with just a click. As far as IIT faculty is concerned, all IITs have similar degree holders that are quality knowledgeable.
A good teacher is the one that hones your talents to the fullest. They not only help you acquire knowledge but also shape your thinking style. Every institute has a few teachers that influence a student in a unique way. I am sure both IIT Guwahati and IIT BHU will have similar teachers.
Ultimately, what matters is the environment and the activities that these colleges will provide us to expand our intellect and maximize our talents. Pay little focus on the faculty and look for the right field to enter that will help you shape your career. Personally, I would suggest you go for IIT Guwahati as it has more open-minded and active people in that area which will give you considerable freedom to think and perform.
The Civil Engineering department of IIT Patna is well-regarded. Here are a few pros and cons to ensure a better understanding of the branch.

Cons
Make the final decision based on your personal preferences and after weighing the above points.
When compared to other colleges in Karnataka, BIT placements are much better. One of my friends completed his BE in Civil Engineering (2016) and got placed in Brigade.

The placement statistics for Civil Engineering in recent years at BIT are as follows.

6.5 LPA |
Median CTC |

The trend is in the favour of Civil Engineers and there's a huge demand for CE in the industry, which was not so a decade ago. So, if you are genuinely interested in Civil then you should go for it.
