Is electronics and design technology for NIT Calicut worthy? How are the core placements for this branch?

MD

To decide a course’s worth depends not only on the subjects dealt with but also on the aptitude/expectations of the student.

It would be good to keep in mind that power electronics is quite a vast field. Electronics Design and Technology is like any other specialization offered by NITC.

If you go in-depth you get to know that this course is a blend of VLSI and embedded/system design. If you are interested in the VLSI domain, then EDT is definitely your way. Most of the subjects are shared with Microelectronics & VLSI branches.

Recruiting Companies

TI, Broadcom, Nvidia, Synopsys, etc.

Okay, let us take a look at the placement scenario:

  • Placements are a bit off for M.Tech students relative to B.Tech students at NITC.
  • Several core VLSI companies (TI, Broadcom, Nvidia, Synopsys, etc) end up hiring mostly B.Tech batch.
  • It also depends on your academics too.
  • Intel usually hires interns during the second year.
  • These internship opportunities are available only to VLSI and EDT students mainly.

Though, the chance for placement in core companies directly is relatively less. But, if you manage to maintain your CGPA on or above 8 you have a chance to get into a good internship opportunity. There will be internship opportunities available in companies like Broadcom, Intel, and Cypress.

Most of these guys selected will be converted to full-time after one year of internship. You can do an internship and Second-year M.Tech main project at the same time. If you are really good you can also try for an internship from other branches like Telecom and Signal Processing.

AS
Arnav Sharma Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

Here are some things you can do at NIT Calicut to make the most of your free time-

To keep yourself busy, you can join karate classes. This will keep you active. If you are into video games, you will always find others to join you. You can watch late night movies and tv series with friends. You will surely end up cooking some maggie in your kettle when late night hunger strikes. You can go cycling during the weekends, in the morning. But make sure to take proper care and use proper bicycles because the roads in Kattangal are very steep. Apart from all this, if you wish to explore a bit, you can visit IIM Kozhikode or Munnar/ Kochi.

All that I listed up till now are fun activities. But for a more productive weekend, you can read novels or take part in quizzes and prepare for those. You can also be a member of a club at NIT Calicut. By organizing club events, you can connect with various people and learn management skills.

If you are a CSE student, your workload will be quite less at NIT Calicut. Thus, you will get plenty of free time. You can use this leisure time by participating in extracurriculars, learning a new skill and making memories with your friends.

Which is better, BITS Goa or NIT Calicut?

SD
Sunil Dutta Posted On : April 8th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2018)

This question sparks a debate among people. You might find some say that even biotechnology at NIT C is better than CSE at BITS Goa; all these are baseless claims. It is strongly suggested to look at the placement statistics before reaching a conclusion.

BITS Goa is way better than NIT Calicut. Forget biotechnology, even CSE at BITS Goa is better than CSE at NIT C.

At NIT C, if you go for biotechnology, you will be placed through mass recruitment in companies like TCS, with a maximum salary of 3 lakhs. These companies have no connection with biotechnology. However, CSE at BITS, Goa can get you placed even at Google. This is definitely not a baseless claim, pre-placement offers and the number of GSOC selections are enough evidence for the same.

Comparing BITS Pilani and IIIT Hyderabad, BITS Pilani ≥ IIIT Hyderabad. The greater than symbol is only because of how old the institutes are. So finally this goes like BITS Goa ≥ IIIT Delhi ≥ BITS Hyderabad.

How was your experience in NIT Calicut if you are a North Indian?

AS
Arnav Sharma Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

Here is my experience of staying at NIT Calicut as a North Indian-

  1. Climate- Kozhikode experiences extreme showers during monsoon season. If you belong to a place where it rarely rains, you will find it even more difficult to adjust to the climate. During summers, scorching heat is accompanied by humidity. Standing under direct sunlight will drench you in sweat.
  2. Food- The mess food is not good but the vicinity has some restaurants that serve decent food. However, their North Indian meals are not good. The city does have some Punjabi restaurants which will not disappoint you.Non-vegetarians have plenty of mouth-watering delicacies to choose from, but vegetarians have limited food options. I highly recommend shakes from the mini canteen.
  3. Language- The localities, especially auto drivers, speak only Malayali. Therefore, you will face some inconvenience. Inside the campus, however, people speak and understand English clearly. They can also understand (but not speak) Hindi.

You will feel culture shock when you first arrive at NIT Calicut. But as time goes by, you will start loving this place and your college.

Is CSE better in NIT Calicut or VIT?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : August 21st, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

I have friends in both institutes, NIT Calicut and VIT Vellore. Based on their experiences, NIT Calicut is a much better choice. Although the institute does not have many permanent faculty and the faculty pool comprises only temporary and assistant professors. However, the other pros overshadow this flaw and make NIT Calicut a preferable choice to VIT.

  • There are very minimal restrictions imposed on the students. Only the first-year students have to follow the 7 pm curfew rule, not the second year everyone is free.
  • NIT Calicut has well-equipped and designed computer labs with modern instruments. The BTech CSE students get to use high-tech software systems labs.
  • As for the placements anyone who is talented and has the skills can get placed with excellent packages.
  • NIT Calicut is the best South Indian NIT in terms of food quality and taste.
  • NIT Calicut fees are much lower than VIT because the former is a government college while the latter is a private college. So BIT Calicut offers a better ROI.
  • NIT Calicut organizes some of the best fests in South India. These are Tathva, the Technical fest, and Ragam, the Cultural fest.

Both the colleges will offer great opportunities so the final decision will depend on your personal preferences

How is production engineering at nit calicut?

SS
Shaurya Singh Posted On : March 25th, 2021
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2018)

You must know what you are getting yourself into. The mechanical engineering department of NITC offers 2 BTech courses that are Mechanical and Production. Both of these departments share faculties, labs, some courses, and other facilities. But at the end of the day, both are different courses.

There are two types of people seen in Production Engineering at NITC:

  1. Students who wanted to study mechanical, but didn’t have the rank for it or could only get mechanical at other NITs. Production is after all similar to mechanical.
  2. Students who didn’t have an appropriate rank to choose a branch/college of their choice, but still wanted to study in an NIT.

There are few things that students commonly felt during their days:

  • Students are often seen saying that they should get mechanical equivalent certificates. There is no purpose in saying this as they are two different branches.
  • Students also complain that teachers are biased. Few teachers refrain from teaching students from production batches. Mechanical batches are taught mostly by permanent faculty while production batches get guest faculties.
  • There are very few placement opportunities for Production batches in comparison with Mechanical. Core companies are even fewer.
  • The students of Production are often isolated from other batches of students. They are allotted spare rooms.

The placement options are not as rare as students may make out, but it may not be in the field that they are looking for.

So in the end one can say that, if the student truly wants to be a mechanical engineer, then this college probably isn’t for you. If they just want the NIT experience, then they should know what options they will have after college.

Which one is better for computer science and engineering and why: VNIT Nagpur, NIT Calicut, or NIT Rourkela?

RG
Rishi Goyal Posted On : March 1st, 2024
B.Tech in CSE from NIT Rourkela

I completed my B.Tech CS from NIT Rourkela, so I can only speak for my own college.

For placements, NIT Rourkela is probably behind the other two because of its locational disadvantage. The lack of good connectivity creates difficulty for IT/software firms to reach Rourkela during placement season. Despite that, last year, the average package for B.Tech CS was Rs. INR 21.87 LPA at NIT Rourkela. This is quite a decent figure.

Moreover, I can assure you of the excellent research and infrastructural facilities at NIT Rourkela. It is probably better than the other two in this regard, and can even be compared to NIT Trichy. A good number of students from the CS department get offered foreign research internships. Some of them even end up receiving an offer for higher studies from universities in the US and Europe.

NIT Rourkela is a good option for B.Tech CS if you want to pursue higher studies, but it might not be the best in terms of placements.
