Is NIT Calicut good in the ranking?

HS
Harshita Sharma Posted On : April 8th, 2021
M.Tech Machine Design, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2022)

According to NIRF 2020 Engineering ranking, NIT Calicut is ranked at 23rd position. It is a good sign since in 2017 and 2018 it was ranked at 44th and 50th position, respectively.

But, the decline in ranking that it had to go through was because of the administration. Let us look at this one by one:

  • The infrastructure is not good. Hostels are not up to the mark and there are no separate hostels for PG students. The mega hostels have been under construction for so many years. Half of the college campus is forest.
  • Very few permanent faculties. Most of the faculties are visiting faculty. Even though faculties keep on retiring, no new permanent appointments are made.
  • The placement records are very bad. Core branches don’t even get placed. You can find placement only in the department of CSE, EEE, and ECE.

Hopefully, all this has changed for the better and so has the ranking in 2020. But, it was because of poor administration that the ranking saw a downfall in the past. On the contrary, cut-offs for JEE and GATE have only increased.

Is NIT Calicut good in ranking?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

This is with respect to the NIRF Engineering Rankings 2023. NIT Calicut is ranked 23rd among the top 100 Engineering Colleges in India and 5th among the NITs.

But keeping the rankings aside, NIT Calicut needs major administrative reforms. Its infrastructure is not up to the mark. Some hostels have poor facilities and accommodation problems. All the departments have a shortage of permanent faculties and manage with Ad hoc faculties. There are no fresh appointments for permanent teachers. Only B.Tech CSE, ECE and EEE have good placements. PG and B.Tech core branches suffer from very low placement rates.

Thus, NIT Calicut needs some major reforms in spite of its high rankings.

How is the VLSI placement in NIT Calicut?

PS
Purvi Singhal Posted On : April 22nd, 2021
Mtech from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2020)

The VLSI placement in NIT Calicut is average, with a slight low count in job offers, and a minimum of 50% internship offers. The table below gives a brief overview of M.Tech VLSI from NIT Calicut.

Total Fees

Rs. 90,460

Median Salary Offered

Rs. 9 LPA

Total Number of seats

25

GATE cut-off

67

Key highlights:

  • Previously, the department of VLSI allowed only 50% of students to go for internships. This rule was set up from the batch of 2018. Previously, 50% of the whole department was allowed for internships.
  • Though the placement count is quite less, a good internship in companies like NVIDIA and Intel would result in a good pre-placement full-time offer.
  • For the 2021 batch, the institute allowed all students for internships, because of problems with guiding students virtually in COVID circumstances. Even if this rule is evoked in the future, the minimum 50% internship rule will be available.

Therefore, the placement in VLSI at NIT Calicut is average, but with some good internship and full-time conversion offers.

Why are DASA students so overrated in NIT Calicut?

PR
Priti Roy Posted On : March 23rd, 2021

One of my cousins was in NIT, Calicut and he had amazing DASA friends and none of them are overrated. If anyone feels that way it may be because of the fancy English and accents.A few students do get in the limelight though. The most obvious of reasons is their communication abilities in the 'English', which most of the other fellow mates find amusing.

It is okay if we don’t focus on these gibberish facts and we progress ahead from these superficialities and value people for their talent instead.

As, the international reputation of colleges depends on the number of international students. So, DASA students help in increasing the ranking of colleges.

  • It would surprise one that they are not given discounts and scholarships.
  • This narrow mentality is the reason only three colleges from India rank in the top 100.

So, on the other hand, look for people, who really do significant work. But deep down the feeling you have in your own inability to gauge the fact that you are lending them this so-called aura and thinking of yourself to be less capable. You may think this is what it takes but think again. This overrated affair is quite hollow, I guess.

How good is the Electronics and Communication Department in NIT Calicut?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : August 19th, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

ECE is one of the toughest departments of NIT Calicut. It stands right behind the CSE department for opening and closing ranks.

  • Academics- ECE is very strict for academics and has a difficult curriculum. There is a mandatory 80% attendance criteria. The teachers are highly experienced, but the teacher-student ratio is poor. The department has a shortage of permanent faculty.
  • Classes- Most students attend classes solely for attendance. Many just read the xerox/ photocopies of class notes as the questions are expected from those. If you like to do extra reading, this will discourage you.
  • Labs/ Practicals- . At the end of each lab, there is a practical lab exam/ project or both. Viva is conducted after each lab session. The lab exams are difficult and test your understanding and concept learning. Sometimes, you will have to run simulations before the actual experiment.
  • Examination - NIT Calicut has a continuous evaluation policy which means that every exam/ assignment has a weightage.
  • Assignments - Assignments and lab work are mostly done in groups. Assignments include running simulations, writing a code, tutorials and surprise tests.
  • Projects - There are labs, a mini project and a major project. Very few ECE students participate in research work or extra projects.
  • Placements - ECE students are mostly placed in software/ managerial positions. Very few end up in core jobs. This is because India has few core jobs in this field. Some end up preparing for higher studies (GRE/ GATE/ CAT).

Thus, the ECE department of NIT Calicut is very strict for academics and the placement scenario is not good for core profiles.

Should I prefer CSE at NIT Calicut or ECE at NIT Warangal?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : July 25th, 2023

Choosing between CSE and ECE is a matter purely based on personal inclinations. While one branch may be good for you, it may not be for someone else, and vice versa.

However, in terms of both academics and placements, NIT Warangal clearly has the upper hand. NIT Warangal is among the top 3 NITs and is better than NIT Calicut in almost every aspect. Its laboratory facilities and faculty are among the best.

Particulars

NIT Calicut CSE

NIT Warangal ECE

Placement %

Highest CTC

INR 67.62 LPA

Lowest CTC

Median CTC

INR 21.4 LPA

Average CTC

Although NIT Calicut has an edge in terms of the highest CTC, NIT Warangal's average package beats it. Average packages are a better means of evaluating the placement scenario, and that being said, NIT Warangal is a better option.

Who is the best faculty at ECED, NIT CALICUT?

IS
Isha Sharma Posted On : March 25th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Calicut

At first, the term 'best faculty' is not an extensive classification basis. As we know Electronics and Communication are a vast field of engineering, and here we can classify roughly into Digital and analog domains.

The faculty members have different specializations and some are indeed true masters of their trend.

  • For Signal Processing - Dr. G Abhilash – He is the perfect blend of Dedication and discipline redefined. He makes students learn subjects through the blend of excellent lecturing skills as well as practical sessions.
  • For Communication - Dr. lillykutty Jacob and Dr. P C Subramanian (Chaos Theory)
  • For Semiconductor Physics, VLSI - Dr. Rama Subramanian – He is also very popular among students for his student-friendly nature.
  • For Embedded - Lyla B Das – Also the author of some textbooks, she has the industry experience and is also student-friendly.

Dr. Sathi Devi and Dr. Elisabeth Elias are also doing remarkable work in their fields.

Dr. Praveen Sankaran, Ameer P M, Dr. Rama Subramanian, and Abhilash are some of the coolest ones among the faculty members and personal favorites of most of the students. They just not come to deliver lectures but also motivate the students and share their industrial experience.
