What is the craziest story you heard in IIT Bombay?

SS
Sandip Sadhukhan Posted On : March 1st, 2021
IIT Bombay (2019)

There are many crazy stories about IIT Bombay. There is an interesting story from the madhouse which features an elephant and a horse.

Once a few IIT students wanted to get an elephant for use in what used to be called EP (Entertain Program, which eventually became PAF). The details are a bit hazy, but the story goes something like this. After searching a lot they got a contact from a Tamil newspaper. This contact ultimately led them to Varadarajan Mudaliar, one of Mumbai’s most dreaded underground dons (in the 70s and 80s). He was actually quite amused by the whole situation and helped the students procure the elephant.

Arun Kaul was an Aeronautical Engineering student at IIT Bombay. He used to deliberately skip Organic Chemistry until he was warned to be thrown out.

Arun had found a sticky horse abandoned by his owner and would go to the lectures on horseback. He used to park it in the cycle stand outside the library. Once Ayaz Januja rode this horse to MB accompanied by a gang of 50 H4 punters who beat drums and bugles on the way. Finally, the horse was reclaimed by its owner.

Arun Kaul also rode a horse on IITB streets, for the launch of the madhouse, almost 35 years after his time.

What can be done to crack the JEE (Advanced) and get into IIT-Bombay?

SB

IIT Bombay (2019)

Don’t be fixed upon a certain agenda and keep your options open. If you will restrict yourself in such a way you might limit your options as well as the capacity to give your best.

Instead, I suggest that you try to analyze why exactly you want to pursue Engineering. Is it because of the sheep mentality or do you really want to build things?

Once you are sure, then figure out how exactly you will be achieving this goal. Set achievable goals for yourself and work sincerely on fulfilling them. Reward yourself for very little achievement on the way. This will gradually increase your confidence and pave the way to achieve much more.

However, a very important thing is to dream but not demand. That is you should be passionate about a certain thing but not fixated on it too much to the extent that if you fail to achieve it, you lose much more. So you can desire to pursue BTech in CSE at IIT Bombay but leave room for other options as well.

Don’t stress yourself out too much and just concentrate on the present, your future will be visible sooner or later.

What is it like to major in Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay?

There is a course called CS207 Discrete Structures taught by Professor Ajit Diwan. It was related to Discrete Mathematics - Number Theory, Graph Theory, Combinatorics, Sets, and Groups, and was one of the most difficult courses my friend came across.

Professor Diwan is well known for his highly challenging problems and course material. During his lectures, he delivers a lot of information based on principles. For math lovers, his classes are an absolute delight.

He refrains from conducting more than one exam a month. However, the level of difficulty of the exam is high. The questions look very complicated but when one ponders upon them, they don’t seem that difficult.

The exams were extremely difficult to the extent that the passing cutoff was 7 out of 100 marks. Despite the entire batch consisting of JEE toppers, a lot of them were not able to make it to the cutoff.

Is CSE at IIT Bombay overrated?

PG

B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay’s rankings are a testament to its credibility and worth in the technology industry. Most JEE toppers consider IIT Bombay as their first preference. This is because IIT Bombay excels in almost all X aspects of B8 placements, faculty, or exposure.

During the placement season companies from a wide range of sectors visit the campus. However, there are some dark facts behind these placement drives. I came to know of these realities through true friends and pass outs of the institute.

One cannot deny the fact that IIT Bombay has witnessed an increase in demand due to the strong influence it has. It is sad to say but many coaching centers run by alumni of IIT Bombay promote the institute. When engineering aspirants contact the alumni for counseling and advice, most of them portray IIT Bombay as the best choice leading to a more influential decision.

What I ultimately mean is that IIT Bombay is definitely the best choice when it comes to engineering. But the fact that no other college is as good as IIT Bombay is also not true.

What was your routine in IIT Bombay?

AW
Amogh Wagh Posted On : March 16th, 2023
B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB)

Firstly, it's important to recognize that everyone follows a different routine. If you are starting a new journey at IITB, your routine may differ from others.

On a general working day, you may have labs/lectures in the morning and classes in the afternoon. Most days, there may be labs, so it's important to wake up early to have breakfast and rush for the labs which may start at 9:30 am. Labs may last until 12:30 pm, after which you can return to the mess for lunch and prepare for classes from 2–5 pm.

After 5 pm, it's a good idea to take a break and relax with friends for snacks and unwind for an hour. It's important to revise what was taught in the class for at most an hour. You can also attend orientations of various clubs in IIT or participate in cultural activities that interest you.

Dinner time can be spent in the mess with friends, having dinner and spending time. After dinner, you can engage in fun activities in your wing with friends or get some rest.

However, in the 2nd semester, you may have to focus more on developing programming skills like python and VHDL, and cut out some of the timepass activities. It's essential to update your routine day by day based on what you learn and what aspects you need to focus on.

Remember, IIT is an opportunity to learn various things, so don't let go of these precious four years of your life. It's important to keep that in mind and make the most of your time there.
