For ISI MSQE exam, can we apply for either Delhi or Kolkata, or both?
While choosing between Kolkata or the Delhi campus students should apply to any one of them and not in both of them. Some commonly known facts regarding this are: -
- Both ISI Kolkata and ISI Delhi are very good for pursuing Masters in Economics.
- Both of the institutes have excellent faculty in their fields.
- Placements for both the institutes are really good, especially for PhDs.
- The interview list for ISI Delhi has been found to be bigger than that of ISI Kolkata
People believe that it is easier to get into ISI Kolkata when compared to ISI Delhi because of the location and fewer competitors for the institute which is absolutely wrong. Both the institutes have the same cutoff and entrance exam. The criteria for the selection of students is also the same in both the institutes therefore it is equally hard for the students to get into both.
According to a report published it has been observed that students find it easier to get into ISI Kolkata when compared to ISI Delhi. The cutoff criteria change every year and for last year it was: -
- For ISI Delhi the cutoff was said to be near 400 out of 600 according to the stats released in the official page.
- For ISI Kolkata the cutoff was said to be near 310 out of 600 from the same source.
Overall ISI Delhi is the better option here but ISI Kolkata is the safer one.
How good is the curriculum of M.Tech C.S. in ISI kolkata?
M.Tech CS at ISI Kolkata isn’t just for CSE graduates. The student crowd includes students from all engineering streams. So, in the first year, ISI encourages students from non-CSE backgrounds to learn coding and study computer science courses. I have friends studying in ISI Kolkata and old IITs. Based on my conversations with them, I will say there is no doubt that M.stat students from ISI have better chances of landing jobs with really lucrative salaries. Can anyone help me to give advice in preparing for ISI Kolkata Entrance exam for Mtech CSE?
There are two examinations through which you can take admission at ISI Kolkata for M.Tech CSE.
- GATE (CS) with a score greater than 720.
- Written test conducted by ISI Kolkata.
The written test conducted is of two types, i.e. Objective type questions will have mathematics paper (11th, 12th, and engineering level mathematics) and Subjective paper will have questions from Mathematics and one domain of choice.
One of my friends got admission to ISI Kolkata a few years back. Here are the reference books that she used for her preparation.

You don’t need to solve the book completely but make sure that you know which kind of questions are asked by referring to the previous papers and then solve them accordingly.
For the technical section, the questions are very basic and test the fundamental knowledge in the chosen domain. You will see the pattern and important topics from the previous year and prepare for it.
It is important to score as high as you can in the written test as it has a higher weightage.
In interviews, you will face a panel of 12-14 professors from every domain. They often ask questions based on your background and ask to prove the theorems from the technical domain. The interviews differ for each candidate. If your written test goes well, you will see your name on the final list.
What are the parameters to be considered by an ISI MSQE 2021 aspirant while making a choice between ISI Delhi campus and ISI Kolkata campus?
ISI Delhi is a better option than ISI Kolkata when it comes to MSQE. However, if you are from West Bengal or any nearby place, ISI Kolkata must be your first preference. Moreover, if you are looking for placements desperately then it would be best suited your first option.
But on the other hand, if you want to be an economist, then you should pursue a Ph.D. in economics without any second thoughts from ISI Delhi.
When placements are looked at, then you might feel disappointed as both campuses have average placement records. Last year, approximately 31 out of 51 students were selected for ISI Delhi and only 14 out of 17 were selected for ISI Kolkata. Moreover, there is a lot of gap in the selection percentage, therefore, it can be concluded that none of them is easier.
What is the procedure for a PhD admission in ISI Kolkata?
ISI Kolkata admission for Ph.D. is based on UGC NET/JRF and ISI admission test or equivalent. Students are shortlisted for admission tests based on their performance in UGC NET/JRF. You need to go through the interview round, on clearing the admission test, qualifying which will make you eligible for final selection.

Yes, it is possible to get admission in ISI Kolkata through GATE in Mechanical Engineering. ISI Kolkata offers admission to its Postgraduate programs in various disciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, based on the GATE score.
To be eligible for admission to the M.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering at ISI Kolkata, you need to have a valid GATE score in Mechanical Engineering.
