New Delhi: An official said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has restored St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi's autonomous status, after a relaxation in the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) gradation rules. The autonomy has been restored for the 2022-27 period. The UGC mailed the intimation to the college administration and Ranchi University (RU) on November 15, 2023.

In February of this year, RU revoked St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi’s autonomy status following its NAAC grading of B+, which fell short of the required A grade for extending the autonomous status. Subsequently, the UGC eased the NAAC grading rules to accept a B grade. Principal Nobhor Lakra said, "After several meetings, the UGC intimated us on November 15 its decision to extend our autonomous status."

The University Grants Commission conferred Affiliation to Ranchi University in 2005 and granted “College with Potential for Excellence” status in 2006. According to the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023, only universities that achieve an 'A' grade from NAAC will be eligible for autonomous status.

After revoking autonomous status, a teacher stated, “We suffered a lot after RU over the examination procedure. Our session got late as the university did not hold examinations in time. Also, our syllabus did not match the syllabus adopted by the university.”

RU deputy director (vocational) Smriti Singh said, "The RU has received the mail from the UGC. We will issue the notification as per the procedure." The college must reconstitute its examination board and academic council to oversee various activities. The RU conducted the semester I examination for the 2022 batch, with pending results. Professors Harishwar Dayal and B K Sinha have approved the UGC's decision.
