Rajiv Gandhi University to implement UGC academic bank credit system

New Delhi: The Institution Grants Commission's academic bank credit (ABC) system is about to be implemented at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), the only central university in Arunachal Pradesh (UGC).

RGU Vice Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha announced on Thursday that the university will create a task force for the ABC, which will be led by a senior level officer and comprised of officers and faculty with experience handling admission, registration, and examination issues. Kushwaha made the announcement while virtually attending a meeting with UGC Chairman Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar.

According to the vice president of corporate communications, the ABC would significantly alter Indian education. "The necessity of the hour is for an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. With the ABC, RGU will be able to support students in learning the subjects of their choice and developing into graduates who are "skill-oriented," which will be a revolutionary step in the academic world ""VC" added.

The regulation makes significant promises, according to the VC, including freedom and flexibility in the system for awarding university degrees, standardisation within the Indian higher education system, and strong integration of the Indian higher education system. This initiative has the potential to internationalise India's higher education system. ABC is a digital repository that houses data on the credits that specific students have earned throughout the course of their academic careers in higher education.

The UGC anticipates that the ABC's use in the next years will have a favourable effect. Participating higher education institutions would greatly benefit from the scheme's efficient credit management. The academic bank will be responsible for opening, cancelling, and confirming the student's academic accounts, according to RGU Controller of Examinations Bijay Raji.

"It will execute duties including student credit accumulation, student credit verification, student credit transfer, and student credit redemption. The government and institutions are offering both online and distant learning courses. Students can redeem the academic credits they have earned for up to seven years after earning them "said he.
