New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a revolutionary Electric Standing Wheelchair ‘NeoStand’ on March 20, 2024. NeoStand is a customizable, compact standing wheelchair that features an intuitive navigation system that will help its users stand.

Users of the NeoStand wheelchair will be able to stand without support by just pressing a button. This in turn will make simple tasks more accessible and give its users freedom of mobility. The ‘NeoStand’ was developed during a project of the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) headed by Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, the Head of R2D2.

NeoStand’s user-centric design gives wheelchair users the freedom to sit for long hours and stand whenever necessary without risking their health or safety. The Director of IIT Madras Prof. V. Kamakoti said, “These are very important translational research works that have a great social impact.”

Speaking about the inspiration behind the project, Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan said, “Integrating standing function in a wheelchair provides health benefits as well as functional and psychological benefits to the user. Our first standing wheelchair was Arise, a low-cost mechanical design, specially designed for rural users, enabling standing and outdoor mobility for short distances.”

Mr. Justin Jesudas, a quadriplegic wheelchair user, stated, “Wheelchairs enable us and it is a safe space for our mobility and to perform daily activities. The ability to stand with just a push of a button makes the wheelchair even more inclusive, helping quadriplegics to stand independently.”
