New Delhi:  The Ministry of Education recently announced that the Fellowship Programme offered by seven prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) can be considered equivalent to a Ph.D. degree.

As per the circular issued by the Union education minister, the management fellowship program is equivalent to Ph.D. degree conferred by accredited Indian universities, and the degree holds validity for eligibility in 'superior posts and services' within the central government, as clarified by the ministry.

“In view of certain references regarding the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) offered in the field of Management Education by Indian Institutes of Management (llMs), this is to clarify that this programme is equivalent to the Ph.D (Doctoral) degree awarded by recognized Indian University for employment to superior posts and services under the Central Government in the appropriate field,” the circular noted.

In total, seven IIMs offer a doctoral degree, which includes IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, and the newly upgraded IIM Mumbai.

What is FRM?

FRM is a full-time doctoral program that involves in-depth research in economics and public policy, finance, and accounting, among others. Candidates are expected to complete this program in five years.

Although the PhD programs at IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore were launched in 2005 and 2017, respectively, some of the leading IIMs have been offering this program since as early as 1986. IIM Ahmedabad, for instance, pioneered the fellowship program in management as early as 1975.
