Professor Shalini Mitra, an Assistant Professor and the HOD of the Department of Business Administration at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Science which is under UGC and MAKAUT, is a Management graduate who also holds a Master's in Tourism degree from Uttarakhand University. Professor Mitra has been published in reputed national and international journals. Her area of research lies in the relationship and the application of spirituality in the field of Management Science, Human Resource Analytics and other allied fields. Presently, she is also the main coordinator of women's development through a spiritual approach in her department. Furthermore, she also holds certifications in the field of Graphology and Holistic Development Teacher.

Being a dignitary of the Swami Vivekananda Institute of Science and Technology, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

Being the HOD, my primary responsibility is to supervise all the children in my department throughout the semester. I am committed to using the knowledge that I have gathered throughout my career towards the students. I also try to understand the students’ needs and cater to them to the best of my ability. As our students come from various cultural backgrounds with differing aspirations, their mentoring is done with a personalized touch. Our focus is on mentoring the students, and we have created a system that caters to their distinctive abilities and knowledge.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

At Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Science, we have implemented a robust system of mentoring which I have mentioned previously. Students come to the mentor and talk to them for guidance regarding their barriers or obstacles, if any in the classes. The media of instruction, the kind of notes we provide, and the assessment methods we have are of the highest standard in the entire Bengal and pan India. At the same time, our mentors also help the student individually to identify and encourage their unique talents and to their full ability.

When you came to the college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

I have come a long way and have witnessed this college growing. From just 30 students to over 200 students today. We have also received 6th rank for our efforts by the Times. Our vision is to align the students with the industry demands, making them industry-ready and highly employable candidates so that they can positively contribute to the Indian economy. We hope they become individuals of good character and morals and can proudly claim that they belong to SVMS.

What do you see as the college’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?

The backbone of Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Science is the students. It is due to their efforts; we have been able to last twelve years. SVMS alumni are right now in every part of the world. They are working in the corporate space, and some have become successful entrepreneurs. One can say SVMS’s greatest strengths are the students, the infrastructure, and the kind of faculty. Our faculties are every day improving according to the industry’s needs and the curriculum need. We are also inculcating a lot of extracurricular activities as needed. Right now, we are exploring ways to include vocational courses in the curriculum that will help students to grow and upskill further.

What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

SVMS offers a special and subtle advantage to the students. All the course books and necessary materials are given free to the students. The college is ranked 6th in the Times evaluation survey. There are both need-based and merit-based scholarships at SVMS. Brilliant students with excellent academic records can get a free education here with a 100% scholarship. Our course fee is reasonable when compared to the infrastructure, degree choices and facilities we provide to the students. 

We also offer courses on digital marketing, personality development, VFX marketing, and analytics along with degrees in collaboration with foreign universities. Additionally, we are in talks to start a student exchange program with a foreign university. All of these have been crafted keeping in mind the status of the Indian economy, the standard of education, and the student’s future prospects. Students can complete their entire educational careers at SVMS and leave with a PhD degree.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

I would firmly advocate that students who come to Swami Vivekananda Institute of Modern Science should prioritize their studies and not worry if they can complete higher education. SVMS has created exceptional students whose origins are from remote villages in Bengal and India. These students have now graduated and deciding on moving to South London, Australia, and New York City. Some have also become entrepreneurs. SVMS has numerous opportunities to continue their education and realize their full potential.
