All candidates seeking admissions in the doctoral program shall have to possess requisite marks/grades in qualifying examinations as enlisted below:

For Ph.D. in Engineering:-

Master's Degree in relevant branch of Engineering/Technology with minimum 60% marks or equivalent CPI 6.5

OR

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant branch of Engineering/Technology with minimum 80 % marks or equivalent CPI

For Ph.D. in Sciences, Computer Applications, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management:

NIT Jamshedpur PhD Selection Criteria

NIT Jamshedpur admission to the Ph.D. program is chosen through a combination of departmental interviews, written exams, and record-keeping of continuously good academic performance. As per GOI regulations, reservations are applicable for SC, ST, OBC, PWD, and EWS. Applicants who meet the requirements stated in the previously mentioned eligibility criteria may be admitted to the Ph.D. program through a written exam and an interview performed by the department/center/institute, with the following weighting system applied:

  • Entrance Test/written Test: 70%

Candidates have to appear for the UGC NET/ CSIR/ JRF entrance exam to be qualified for the program. The institute conducts its own written test to shortlist the candidates.

  • Interview: 30%

Candidates who clear the written test will be called for the Interview round. The Screening Committee will check the eligibility criteria of the candidates.

The selection process for admission to the doctoral program depends on exam and interview performance as well as a continually good academic record. However, admission to the Institute will only occur following screening for the qualifying requirements outlined in the eligibility criteria for Ph. D in Sciences, Computer Applications, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management for professors, staff, and sponsored project fellows. They will not be required to take any exams or interviews. All applicants for admission to Ph.D. programs must meet the requirements for medical fitness. The Institute Medical Board's assessment of a candidate's medical suitability is final.

NIT Jamshedpur PhD Admission Procedure

NIT Jamshedpur's Ph.D. program candidates must submit their applications by the deadline to be reviewed by the admissions cell. The candidates who are employed and wish to do a Ph.D. must submit Sponsorship/ NOC (No objection certificate) from the employer at the time of admission, without which admission will not be possible. Admission to the PhD program is through direct notice from the institute. The examinations and interviews that each department conducts are the basis for choosing the candidates.

NIT Jamshedpur PhD Course Details

NIT Jamshedpur’s research scholars will be assigned a Supervisor (not more than two) by the Department. All Research Scholars will have to obtain a minimum grade of 'C' in individual subjects so assigned. Should the candidate fail to clear the coursework within one year of the course enrollment, the DSC may review the performance of the candidate and recommend a change of coursework. The student shall submit the thesis within two months from the date of the pre-submission seminar. A thesis evaluation board shall be constituted for each student consisting of two examiners (from outside the Institute) along with thesis supervisor(s). The categories of research scholars are given as follows:

  • Institute Stipendiary Full-Time Research Scholars: Research scholars under this category are entitled to a fellowship from the Institute as per MHRD norms. The candidate must have qualified GATE/NET or any other equivalent test recognized by MHRD for the award of the fellowship.
  • Sponsored Full-Time Research Scholars: Research scholars under this category receive financial support from AICTE under the QIP scheme or from Institutions/Organizations/Industries under study leave. Foreign students under this category shall be sponsored by their Government or by Govt. of India (ICCR or other such organizations/agencies).
  • Self-Financed Full-Time Research Scholars: Research scholars under this category are those who support themselves or receive fellowships from other agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, etc. They shall not receive any financial support from the Institute in any form.
  • Self-Financed Part-Time Research Scholars: Research scholars under this category shall be persons employed in Industries/R&D organizations/Institutions. They shall be required to furnish a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer. The candidate will produce a certificate that he will be permitted to attend classes and examinations as and when conducted by the Institute.
  • Faculty Members/Staff/Sponsored Project Fellows of N.I.T. Jamshedpur (Part-Time): Regular faculty members, regular staff members, and sponsored project fellows of N.I.T. Jamshedpur are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program in the concerned Departments under this category.

NIT Jamshedpur PhD Financial Assistance

All Institute Stipendiary Full-Time Research Scholars shall be entitled to an award of an Institute Scholarship/fellowship.

  • Enhancement Seminar: - A student is required to deliver a seminar on the progress of his research work carried out in the previous semesters and work to be carried out in the subsequent semesters. The seminar will be delivered to an open audience in the presence of SRC and DRC. The stipend/scholarship shall be enhanced after completion of two years from the date of admission as per MHRD guidelines on successful completion of the seminar (DPF-09).
  • Extension Seminar: - A student has to deliver an extension seminar in case he/she has completed four years as an institute scholar and his/her research work has not been completed (DPF-10). The extension will be allowed for a period of a maximum of one year, limited to six months only at a time.

During the fellowship period, no Institute Stipendiary Full-Time Research Scholar may accept or hold any paid or unpaid positions, or obtain any emoluments, salaries, stipends, or other funding from any other source. However, with prior approval from the supervisor(s) and dean (academic), they can sometimes get compensated for specific work completed for projects (mostly consulting). According to MHRD norms, all full-time, stipendiary research scholars at the Institute must contribute to departmental academic activities for a minimum of eight hours a week, as allotted by the relevant department.
