JNU will now offer admission to the PhD program based on National Eligibility Test (NET) scores instead of the National Testing Agency (NTA) entrance test from the academic year 2024-25. The university will be inviting applications from candidates with valid NET scores, JRF-qualified candidates, and candidates qualified with Assistant Professorship.

JNU Ph.D Eligibility Criteria

Candidates need to fulfill the following eligibility criteria for admission in Ph.D at JNU.

  • Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent grade 
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates 
  •  A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the same Institution 
  •  Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

JNU Ph.D Selection Criteria

JNU PhD admissions are based on scores obtained in the entrance examination followed by viva voce conducted by the respective department. JNU will now offer admission to the PhD program based on National Eligibility Test (NET) scores instead of the National Testing Agency (NTA) entrance test from the academic year 2024-25. Admission to PhD will be offered in three categories:

  • Category 1: JRF-qualified candidates (100% weightage will be given to viva-voce)
  • Category 2: Candidates qualified for Assistant Professorship without JRF
  • Category 3: Candidates neither qualified for JRF nor Assistant Professorship but are eligible for admission to Ph.D only based on NET score. (70% weightage to NET scores and 30% weightage to Viva Voce)

JNU Ph.D Admissions: How To Apply?

Online Application:

  • Candidates can register themselves for admission to the integrated Ph.D and M.Phil./ Ph.D programme through an online application process available at the official university website.
  • Application fee of Rs. 300/- should also be submitted along with completed applications through the online payment modes such as net banking, credit/ debit card etc.

Offline Application:

  • Candidates can also request for application form to be sent by post along with the prospectus by sending Crossed Demand Draft of Rs.300/- along with the self-addressed envelope.
  • DD should be drawn in favour of "Jawaharlal Nehru University", payable at New Delhi and the letter should clearly indicate the program of study for which the Application Form is required
  • Natives of Nepal can also obtain the prospectus and application form by sending demand draft of amount Rs. 400/- or equivalent in USD

  • Two self attested copies of the Matriculation, Higher Secondary Pre-University of Indian School Certificate or Senior School Certificate (10+2) or an equivalent examination certificate, showing the age/date of birth of the candidate

FAQs

Ques. What is the relaxation offered to Ph.D Candidates at JNU??

Ans. A relaxation of 5% marks from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed in the qualifying degree for those belonging to SC/ST /OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

Ques. What is the criteria for Admission of JRF holders to Ph.D programme at JNU?

Ans. Only those candidates who fulfil the minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed for admission of candidates to Ph.D programmes in the respective schools/centres and have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship through CSIR, UGC National Eligibility Test (NET), ICMR, ICAR, AYUSH, DBT examination are eligible to apply separately in the prescribed form under this category in the respective school/centre/Special Centre wherever separate intake through JRF category is available.

  • Such candidates shall be exempted from appearing in Computer Based Test (CBT). However, candidates shall have to appear for an interview and their selection will depend on their performance in the interview.
  •  Candidates who have appeared in these examinations, but results awaited may also apply under this category. However, such candidates will be interviewed upon submission of a valid proof of having qualified for or awarded the JRF certificate at the time of interview.
  •  Please note that candidates who have been awarded “Lectureship” in the CSIR/UGC examination are not eligible and will not be interviewed.
  •  The above qualified candidates would be invited directly for viva-voce examination and their admission to M.Phil and Ph.D programmes shall be solely based on 100% weightage in viva-voce. 

Ques. What is the criteria for Admission of Foreign Nationals to Ph.D programmes at JNU?

Ans. The admission of foreign students for Ph.D. programme may be considered in compliance with UGC 2016 Regulations regarding number of research scholars faculty (i.e. Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor) can supervise. Foreign students shall be offered seats only if seats are left vacant in any discipline after being offered to Indian Candidates who have appeared in JNUEE – 2024.

Ques. How can I correct the wrong exam center in the application form?

Ans. This correction can be done by the candidate himself / herself before paying the fees through the edit option available in the form. Candidates are advised to select the Examination Centre with utmost care. After the payment of fees you cannot make any changes in the column. No request for centre of examination change shall be entertained under any circumstances.
