IIT Kharagpur Mechanical Engineering

Remarks :

The place in which the college is located is a big negative point but the vast 2200 acre campus and all the facilities available inside it more than make up for that single negative point. Apart from that, all other factors are mostly on the positive side and being a part of such an amazing KGP family is an experience of a lifetime.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I studied Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. The subjects I studied there where highly conceptual and focused on strengthening the student's basics about Mechanical Engineering. Although the course failed to prepare a student for present developments in the field and thereby making him/her unfit for a core mechanical job.

Placement Experience :

A lot has been said and heard about the placements at IITs. Though all those talks are massively overhyped, I would still say that the placement scenario is quite good in the college with most of the students getting placed in good comapines with good packages. As far as internship is concerned, the situation is not as good as placements with the college's placement cell managing to provide internships to only 40% of the students in the pre final year. Rest of the students are forced to arrange for internships by themselves.

College Events :

A lot of events and intense competitions are organised in the college throughout the year. First major event of the academic year is the Illumination and Rangoli competition on the day of Diwali. This is followed by cultural fest - Spring Fest, tech fest - Kshitiz, entrepreneurship summit - GES and various other department fests. The last competition of the year is the InterHall General Championship where all the Halls of Residence fight till their last breath to get a top spot in one or more GCs amongst Sports, Cultural and Tech GCs

Fee Structure And Facilities :

As the college is heavily funded by the government, the fee structure is extremely feasible for the students. Though the fees have increased quite a bit in last few years, there are scholarships and low interest loans easily available to decrease the financial burden on students' families

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

A lot of students on the basis of their merit and financial situation are eligible for MCM scholarship which covers 100% of the tution fees. Also, low interest student loans are available and can be processed within a week in a SBI Branch inside the campus.

Campus Life :

IIT Kharagpur provides facility to literally pursue any of your field of interest. There are clubs/societies for each and every activity that one can think of. Also there are proper grounds/courts for each and every sport and the college encourages students to take part in sports or any other extracurricular activities

Hostel Facilities :

Hostel(Hall) fees are included in the total fees and there is no option for opting out of it - and even if there was, I don't think anyone would opt out of it and miss the opportunity to be a part of amazing Hall culture that KGP has. Infrastructure wise, the old hostels can be classified as below par but those are the Halls which have the best culture and a fantastic alumni network.

Alumni/Alumna :

All the seniors and the massive alumni network is always there in help of juniors who are in need. Many of them even go out of their way to help a student get internship, placement or to help a student in personal issues as well.

Admission :

1. Scored above 80PR in board exams 2. Cleared JEE Mains exams and scored above the cutoff required to appear for JEE Advanced (cut off marks ~ 100/360. changes a bit every year) 3. Scored good marks in JEE Advanced and got a seat in IITKGP

Faculty :

The college is blessed with a team of most intelligent and capable faculties in almost all the departments. Thus it allows a student to interact with the brightest mind in any field and get invaluable insights. Most of the faculties were extraordinary in their research but at the same time lacked basic teaching skills thereby making theory classes extremely boring.

Placement Experience:

Students from 7th semester onwards are elegible for campus placements. Some of the companies that visits for placements are Google, microsoft, amazon, pwc, TI, accenture, PPEL, etc. A total of 920 recruiters were there which offered 753 offers to the students and out of them around 75-78% were placed. The highest placement package was offered by microsoft for 51 lpa as PPO to 14 students and the role was IDC. The average package is around 7.5 lpa. I am planning to appear in GATE exam and go for masters in IITs after completion of my degree where i will be persuing my further studies in transportation engineering.

Course Curriculum Overview:

B.Tech in CSE is future proof and a very good course for IT sector jobs and I was always excited working in these companies, that's why I choose the course. There are 10-12 faculties present in every department. Each faculty is M.Tech qualified and Drs. Their teaching quality is very good. 4 internal theory and 2 Lab exams happen each semester. The questions are standard, regular, and sincere students can easily pass.
