- Infrastructure is a bit old and often create problems in extreme weather conditions.
- There is a little focus on research aspects of course and it's mostly theoretical.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The best thing about this curriculum is that it is non very burdensome for us and easy to navigate through. It is well divided into multiple units making it easier to navigate through. For example - there is this course of key concepts in the very first semester which lays foundation for upcoming all semesters. Similarly in the first semester, we are taught Constitution of India laying the basics very clear . I personally choosed this course due to my interest and it's application in almost every competition exam out there. There can be a little bit improvement regarding the introduction of research methodology courses. Since there are no courses yet, it often cause a problem for students who want to pursue PhD in future. The frequency of exams is fine enough as there is a lot of time for us to adjust in the new semester and enjoy all the curricular and co curricular activities without a constant load of examinations all the time. This is the best thing I find.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Tution fees per year - Rs. 13000 approx. Examination fees odd semester - Rs. 3000 aprrox Examination fees even semester - Rs. 3000 approx Total - Rs. 19000 There are scholarshio available for SC students from the state of Panjab. Also, students may claim benefits of POST MATRIC scholarship as well if they are eligible. The fees is to be paid in three portions, one time tution fees and two examination fees too be paid one semester each.
Campus Life :
The campus is huge and the amount of activities buzzing around cannot be listed all at once. Campus Life of Panjab University is very happening and a lot of fests such as Aagaz, Cyanide, Vimarsh etc etc. keep taking place. There are lots of activities that are held department wise. Regarding the department of Political Science- 1.) it is one the most active Departments of University and thus a lot of activities take place. 2.) We have a monthly Newsletter - Political Digest which covers are the major and minor events of the department. 3.) There is Electoral Literacy Club which is first in the North India and very active in Electoral awareness. 4.) A movie club which screens movies followed by a discussion every Thursday. 5.) A discussion Club which holds weekly discussions on topic of relevance. 6.) A green committee oriented toward sustainability. And a lot of other activities keep taking place every now and then. Elections being on the most crucial and awaited event annually both in the department as well as university campus. A student council of 4 members is elected through these elections and Department Representative from each department are also elected at the same time. Facilities in the department 1.) there is a department Library which is open from 9-5. 2.) Separate and hygienic washrooms. 3.) A Digitally advance and supportive clerical office and staff. 4.) Separate sitting space for research scholars. 5.) A conference hall.
Admission :
I did not apply to any other college because given my graduation marks, I could easily get admission here in this university and it was nearest to my home. Regarding the admission procedure, there were around 1100 applicants and a total of 60 seats were there including reserved ones. So it was quite a tough call. The admission procedure usually includes filling of form, then a tentative list is made out, correction window is provided , a physical counselling takes place and then final admission list and waiting list is prepared. The process usually takes a month time. In my course , it was merit based admission and hence no entrance exam was held. Political science as subject was required in Bachelor's. Few other points worth noting - 1.) Preference is given to honours students in political science. 2.) there is also a weightage if the student is from same university - Panjab University. 3.) NSS,NCC and youht fest weightage is also provided.
Faculty :
The teacher student ratio is 20:1 which is quite good. Personal attention is also provided to students if they seek for any help from the faculty staff. In addition to teaching staff, a set of non teaching staff is also contributing to aid the smooth functioning of academics. Each faculty is unique in their approach and super helpfull. They keep providing material from time to time and never hesitate to help even if outside of the regular academic scope of course. Prof. Pampa is an active and disciplined professor, she is currently the chairperson. Dr. Janaki is one of the youngest professors and definitely favourite of students. Prof. Ashutosh is yet again one of the most experienced and most interactive professors. There is Semester system - two semesters per year and exams are held once in December for odd semester and then once in May for even semester. In a semester, there are mid term examinations and snap tests for the sake of internal assessment. Terms papers for each course are also to be submitted each semester. There are 16 courses in total divided equally in 4 semester, this also include few optional courses. Exams are of quite moderate level and are provided in 3 languages - Hindi, English and Punjabi. There is one exam for each course.
