Course Curriculum Overview

3

Our batch had a major shift in the curriculum, which is known as CBME or curriculum based medical education. This is introduced with the vision of increasing clinical skills and communication skills. But due to the sudden change it lead to major confusion in our faculties on how to implement this curriculum properly. We faced a lot of difficulties because of that. However many teaching methods like roleplay, drama and group discussions were introduced for the first time, which was effective. It also changed our question paper pattern. Previously, we had 2 hour long examination in university, which is changed to 3 hours now. But with adequate preparation, there is not much difficulty in clearing the exams.

Internships Opportunities

3

We don't usually work under companies during internship. We are posted in different departments, which changes rotationally. Due to the huge patient load, intership work is quite hectic, with little or no time to sleep everyday. We have take long shifts which can at a time extend to 72 hours. Our stipend is about ? 27,000 per month

Fees and Financial Aid

I have not taken any employment during my undergraduate years. The tuition fee is about ?21,000 per annum which accounts to a total of about ?1,05,000 which has to be paid in 5 deposits each year. Other miscellaneous fee and hostel fee accounts to a total of about ?60,000. There was also an admission fee of about ?30,000. Therefore it all sums up to a total of 3 lakhs including all extra fees. There are scholarships available for financially challenged and caste reservation students like SC, ST and OBC such as MOMA scholarship. There is also stipend during internship which is ?27,000 per month now.

Campus Life

3.5

Our college offers opportunities to showcase every talent from arts to sports. There are various clubs here like literary club, nature club etc, but the activities at the club level are a bit dull. However, we conduct annual arts and sports meet, and the winners can then compete at the district and state level- the interzone and intermedicos fest. We also celebrate almost every holiday starting from new years and ending in Christmas. There'll be appropriate programs related to the event and anyone can participate in that. We have a large central library and separate libraries for post graduates in every department. Our library offers a wide range of books and journals to refer and read from. Our classrooms are large lecture halls, that facilitates 250 students. We have now about 5 lecture halls in total. There is a lecture hall equipped with smart board and interactive learning. All the other lecture halls have projectors.

Hostel Facilities

3

We have 5 hostel complexes in total- 2 for men and 2 for women. During first year, we all had to stay in a room with 6 inmates, which was really congested, but after that, we progressively shift to other rooms according tonour seniority. For interns , a room of 2 is available. Hostels are quite affordable - ? 10,000/ year and accessible for everyone. The hostel mess is also decent at a cheap rate of ?100/ day. Registration for hostel is from the college office. The major issue is the space constraint.

Admission

I got admission on state quota (general category) after giving the NEET exam in 2019. I scored 646/ 720 and had an AIR rank of 1039 and state rank of 131. The overall application process was easy and all the necessary forms were given in the college itself. The admission dates were informed in the state website of Kerala, which can be found after filling the application for state quota. Application fees was paid in the college treasury itself. I don't have any suggestions for this, as the application was easy.

Faculty

3

The major issue of our college is the doctor to patient ratio, which is highly inadequate at present, which leads to the lack of time for faculties to teach us. Also, this leads to crowding of students in clinics around one faculty thats ineffective for proper learning. However, our faculties try their best to impart their knowledge and resources. Most of them are very approachable and allows clearing of doubts during clinics. The lectures are often monotonous and boring

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course not due to the curriculum..i qlways dreamed of becoming a good doctor. The level.of satisfaction you get in this profession wont be anywhere else. The modernization of curriculum has stressed on the clinical aspects which i think is the core of medicine. We have been taken to bedside and taught to examine patients diagnose the case and interpret imaging. Also the skill lab clears the obstruction we face in a real life like we are being trained in BLS and ALS. Our junior batches are also taken to trivandrum medical college to see autopsy which in fact is a real opportunity. The course could improve in a way that apart from academics it must give importance to sports arts also which is not promoted in our college. Also revisions classes can be made effects by conducting small test papers chapter wise instead of taking chapters on repetition. Exams are almost done in an effective way. The course is actually very difficult compared to others. So much effort has to be put in from both students and Teacher's side.

I chose MBBS as it has been one of my dreams since my childhood and it's my parent's dream more than mine. Faculties teaching in the First year min qualification is a master of science in the particular subject and from the second year onwards the minimum qualification is MBBS for every faculty. Three exams per year and you have to pass any one exam to write in university exam and it's somewhat difficult to pass if you start studying at last

Remarks:

The hostel and college infrastructure are a little poor compared to other colleges but it is expected with the minimal fees given. There are a lot of festivals and programs and a healthy political atmosphere. The non violent conflicts between the two opposing parties lead to good development in the college.
