Comprehensive review of MACE, Kothamangalam

Dislikes

  • It feels like a school sometimes. Only during fests and club competitions, it feels like a college. Otherwise it's always studies and exams. Two internal exams are conducted in a day. College follows a very tight schedule.
  • Too many special classes are taken. Even though there is government order to take classes only till noon in April, most of the days we have special classes till 4 pm.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I feel that the curriculum to which the college is affiliated is a bit irrelevant and the syllabus is the same for many years, that is, not upgraded. Students need to acquire more and more skills in order to prepare for real world applications. I feel that practical knowledge is as important as theoretical knowledge in engineering. But our curriculum does not give enough importance for practical knowledge. The curriculum is based on conventional textbooks and teaching methods. Exams are sometimes very difficult and is not easy to pass.

Placement Experience :

The college has an active placement cell which includes experienced facilities and few students. The placement processes begin in the third year (5th or 6th semester). Average package is 3 lakhs per annum. The highest package offered was 21 lakhs per annum. Many tech and core companies visit the college for placements. Accenture, Apollo, Bosch, IBM, Infosys, Deloitte, Toshiba, Google, Cognizant, Oracle, TCS, Schneider electric are some of the companies that has visited the college. About 40% of students get campus placed. Many students receive 2 - 4 offers. As an electrical engineering student, I wish to work in a core company after the degree

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

As the college is government aided, there isn't much fees and us affordable for a middle class student. Also the college provides many scholarships for students who are academically excellent, financially backward etc. Alumni scholarship, E grants, etc. are two of the many scholarships that a student can get.

Campus Life :

The college hosts two fests in an academic year, Takshak, the technical fest, and Sanskriti, the cultural fest. A large number of workshops and competitions associated with Takshak are conducted by the different departments. Whereas, during Sanskriti, many cultural programs are conducted such as dance performances, songs, mono act, fashion show, movie screenings, etc. DJ night or Proshow marks the end of each fest. The college has a central library in the main block and 5 department libraries with over 78000 which helps students to expand their knowledge outside their textbooks and classrooms. College gives a great importance to sports and extracurricular activities. Students actively participate in all events and have achieved well in various tournaments conducted in and out of the college. College has two basketball courts, a football stadium and a volleyball court. College has over 15 active student clubs which provide more practical knowledge.

Hostel Facilities :

The college has hostel facilities for both girls and boys. But I reside in a private hostel near the College named Saniya. It consists of first years only. The hostel facilities are average to good. Meal quality is good. Most of the days, meals are according to the menu. The admission to the hostel was simple. One has to pay the caution deposit (refundable) and the hostel fees for one month on the day of admission and the hostel authorities will guide to your room. Each room consists of 3 members. Each room has attached bathroom. The hostel fees here are affordable. It is 5600 per month including rent and food. But electricity bill must be paid separately every two months. There is a mess cut for 4 days and above if there is college holiday. It is 100 per day. There are many hostels in Kothamangalam area like Anna's hostel, Sarah's hostel, Kiran's hostel etc for girls and Chakravarthy hostel, MES hostel, D&D hostel etc for boys.

Admission :

In order to eligible for a course in this college, one has to clear KEAM examination. There are 5 departments in this college and each course has a different cut off with Btech CS having the highest cut off. Also the cut off varies with reservation category. Tha admission processes are all conducted by CEE through a series of allotments, normally 3 allotments and a spot allotment. After the college is allotted, the rest of the processes take place in the college itself and the candidate and his/her parents/guardians have to come to the college directly on the days the college has given.

Faculty :

Most of the faculty members are good at their respective fields. They are qualified with Btech and Mtech and the seniormost faculties have acquired PhD. Students can approach teachers anytime during the college hours if they are free. Most of them are very helpful in clearing doubts. There is a good teacher-student ratio. Students have mentors and they can talk to them about their academic or personal distress. However, not all faculty members provide effective education. Few teachers are not up to the mark. They may be well qualified, but their teaching method is not very satisfactory for the students. This is the case of a few teachers. Otherwise, the college provides excellent faculty.
