IIIT-H

Dislikes

  • The academic rigor is too high sometimes. The constant inflow of assignments and exams can be quite tiring.
  • I recently learned that electives are randomly allocated with makes no sense.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I was mainly focused on CSE as my core branch. it just happened that this was the best college i could get with CSE. The teaching is hectic but the courses are structured really well. We get to learn to code in the first year itself, a bit different from other colleges. It gets a bit bit hectic due to continuous stream of assignments and exams and also increased competitiveness. But i suppose that's true for every other college.

Internships Opportunities :

There are no internship opportunities thrugh college as it had issued a perma-ban on internships to promote more students to research. Whether this was the right decision or it worked or not, i do not know. But i do know that the students depending surely on their caliber, are able to get good opportunites here.

Placement Experience :

The placement cell in our college starts accepting requests from final year of your course only. I am unsure for dual-degree students though. It depends when your thesis is finalized. The issue is the campus does not consider the placements not done its placement cell int its portfolio which makes it harder to decide the final average package.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The tuition fee has increased drastically. It was 1,80,000 per sem in my first year and it already hiked to 2,00,000. Mess and hostel fees also seem to be increasing. Hostel and Mess is compulsory (you can refuse if you have a valid medical reason). PGs around this area are way more expensive so the hostel and mess fee structure makes sense especially in this economy.

Campus Life :

IIIT-H is a tech college but it has some good sports and cultural fests , albeit very sparsely. Even our main event seems to be a bit lacking compared to other Tier-1 colleges but as a student you thoroughly enjoy these fests. Our tech fests are very interesting hosted by out tech teams and even sometimes our research labs. Sports are also encouraged. Our college recently hosted the State of Telanagana Inter-College sports event. Cultural fests are also amazing with a lot of talent.

Hostel Facilities :

Hostels are compulsory and maintenance is done regularly. No complaints really as i have seen and heard way worse from other colleges. The messes are also fine but seem a bit too oily and unhealty from time to time, but again after seeing worse, i am fine and accustommed to it.

Admission :

The mode of entry for my case was UGEE. It is the only exam held by IIIT-H on its own behalf specifically aimed for its dual-degree courses. The exam has two rounds. The first round is a written paper of 3 hrs divided into two sections SUPR (60 Marks, 1hr) and REAP (120 Marks, 2hrs). Each section has its own cutoff so the candidate has to clear both sections' cutoff to clear foe the next round. Both papers were easy (JEE Main Level) with only REAP being a burden as it focused on logical and reasoning questions (something i barely passed). For future applicants, it may be easier has they will have reliable PYQs, something i faced difficulty in acquiring due to poor transparency on IIIT-H's side. Next comes the personal interview round. It comes after the result of the first round and it consists of a personal interview by a panel of proferssors. The inetrview was a bit quirky, but easy for me nonetheless. I hope this helps.

Other Applied Colleges

Netaji Subhas University of Technology - [NSUT] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Computer Engineering)

I deemed IIIT-H to be a better choice due to its higher average package and better recommendations. Also its location is right in the middle of Hyderabad's HiTech place with great track record of local hiring.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chosen computer science and engineering as my course. I enjoy coding and learning. This course gives the challenge to apply our ideas on real world applications. I choose skills over the marks because scoring only marks doesn't give a good placement.

The course content provides sufficient exposure to required knowledge in the field though it is advisable to seek additional resources outside the course for better understanding. Coursework is not too hard and can be managed by the student.

Placement Experience:

Here, students can try for internships in the 3rd year. Some students who want to pursue higher education like MTech or MBA or PhD don't go for placements and internships. The placement rounds happen in the 4th year where many companies come to the campus, exams and interviews are conducted to shortlist students. For example, in my branch of civil engineering, the placement percentage last year was 50%, with the average package being around 14 lacs. Many companies come to the campus and the highest package last year was 90 lacs which was for a quant role. There are mostly companies coming for SDE and AI/ML roles. The number of companies coming for Consulting or product management roles is quite declining over the years. My plan is to try for placement in some Tech company, and work for some years then pursue a MBA.
