NIT Sikkim detailed Review and insights

Dislikes

  • During rainy season it creates a lot of problem as there are a lot of leeches there and we are afraid to go out.
  • The mess food is not up to the mark and tasteless, although it is a problem with every mess

Course Curriculum Overview :

I choose this course because 1. I wanted to prepare for the AFCAT exam after my graduation and being from Mechanical Engineering gives me an extra edge. 2. It gave me an NIT tag as well The faculty is very supportive and they also help you to apply for internships. Many students went to ISRO as well for internships. Also, teachers teach very well in the class, especially in Mechanical Engineering. Although they are quite strict in terms of attendance. All the faculty members are IIT and NIT pass-outs and have completed their Ph.D. Term exams are very easy to pass if you just go and sit in class and have the names of the topics taught. Also, do PYQs. We have 2 mid terms of 15 marks each and one end-term of 50 marks in a semester(of 6 months). The remaining 20 marks are for internal assessment and teachers give you good marks in that unless you are not too annoying to them.

Internships Opportunities :

For internships usually, companies come for web development roles with minimum stipend of 10000 and many students also get a chance to go to ISRO, although it is an unpaid internship it gives you great exposure. Mechanical Engineering companies like Maruti Suzuki come for internship where most of the students get PPO.

Placement Experience :

After 5th semester, the college has on-campus internship options and after during 7th semester, you will be eligible to sit for campus placements. Many companies come for campus placement including IBM, NVIDIA, Deloitte, etc. PLacements for CSE, ECE, and EEE are very good. In 2023 highest placement was from EEE of 44 lakhs from NVIDIA. In Mechanical most of the students get PPO. For Civil, very least options are available. Usually, 80% of students get placed every year.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The fees depends on your category as well as income. If you are an SC/ST student then you have to pay approximately 35000 including hostel, mess and course per semester if you are a general/OBC category student then 1. if you fall below 1 lakh income: 35000 per semester 2. Between 1 to 5 lakh income: 55000 approx per semester 3. above 5 lakhs: 1 lakh per semester The amount stated above includes hostel mess and course fee everything

Campus Life :

We have 2 fests, one cultural fest named UDGAM and one technical fest named ABHIYANTRAN. many celebrities come for concerts and many events are also held where students enjoy a lot. We have a library where there are all course books available and in enough number. There are also certain books for GATE and other exams to refer. We also have a online library where many journals and magazines are available to read online. All classrooms have smartboards or projectors but being a temporary campus it is not that well developed. There is also an annual sports held for 3 days where various indoor and outdoor activities are held. Some students also go to other NITs for Inter NITthe sports. There are many clubs, most active is the literary club,i.e, The regnant ink and various departmental clubs suc as Anuvrat(ECE) , DevCANs(cse) , Yantrika(Mechanical),etc. Students can also joint cells of institute such as Web Development cell, E and I cell, T and P cell ,etc.

Hostel Facilities :

The boys' hostel is quite good. Students get a bed, cupboard, and a chair each and hostels are well structured. But the girl's hostel is quite congested and there is no place to sit on a table and chair to study, although they provide that. Girls' hostel has an attached bathroom and toilet. A room has 5 people and it is very congested. Also, many insects may enter your room which you might have never seen before. Breakfast and Dinner are quite ok but lunch is not that good. You can get a hostel during admission itself. It is quite affordable as they charge 8000 per semester for hostel and 18000 for mess(which serves food 3 times a day) It is better to stay in hostel than a PG as it is a remote area and very less mode of trasportation is avilable.

Admission :

You have to take an Entrance exam named JEE Mains and then go for counseling (Josaa or CSAB or preferably both) I got into this college in the second round of CSAB. IJEE mains will be available 3 months before the exam on the JEE mains official website. The questions in this exam is based on PCM of 10+2 level only of the CBSE curriculum After you clear this exam, based on your percentile and preference you will get a college and branch. You have to pay a certain amount to either lock or upgrade your seat. SC/ST students have to pay comparatively low fees and they get a college in the 80-90 percentile also. But if you are a General /OBC candidate, you get a college if you score at least above the 90 percentile. After you get a college, you have to go for physical verification in your college with all the documents and complete the admission process.

Placement Experience:

The placement cell is very active and well equipped to bring recruiters from diverse group of organisations. The pre final and final year students are allowed to sit for interview. The highlight this year for me was Mercedes Benz hiring a student from Mechanical Department giving a very high package. A good chunk of people get placed every year. I am also looking forward to placement opportunities on campus, I believe there'll be enough opportunities.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I have chosen this course because this course can help me learn both the coding and electronics part. Faculties are well qualified but sometimes they are not able to explain the things and sometimes they also avoid our doubt if we chok in the middle. We appear for three term exam in every 2 months. Some subjects are very difficult to pass because we are unable to understand them in class

Placement Experience:

Several companies come for campus placement. Third years are elligible for summer internships and fourth years can get placement + Internship offer for the last semester internship. The college provides us with pre-placement training which is very helpful which I'm currently undergoing. The placement record of the college has been satisfactory till now. We also get sessions from alumnus who tell us their experience and guide us through their experience. The placement drives can be improved hope for more companies and more opportunities to be given to every students.
