Vasundhra Dhamija's Review On National Institute Of Fashion Technology - [NIFT], Navi Mumbai

Entrance Preview :

I took the NIFT Entrance Test. It is divided into two parts. The first test has CAT (Creative Ability Test) which has 3-4 topics you have to design on and visually present it using dry mediums only and GAT (General Ability Test) which has questions in English, Math and logical reasoning.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course curriculum is very vast and requires regular hard work from the students. It molds you in a way to think like a designer and also enhances your personality through interaction and presentation. A lot of attention is payed to detailed work and the curriculum is one of the best i have seen anywhere in the design field.

Internships Opportunities :

NIFT provides internships in 3rd year. Stipend is around 10-15k. I generally get good feedback about internships from seniors.

Placement Experience :

We have 77% placement in our college minimum every year. The only Fashion Design Institute to have such placement records. Overall, almost all the students get a job after college and some go onto start their own businesses. I have not been placed yet, so i do not know. General packages are 2.5 lpa-7 lpa.

College Events :

Almost all festivals are celebrated in our college. From diwali, holi, lodi to halloween. We also have a diwali mela. We have our own fest called Spectrum which lasts 2 days and has various competitions and stalls for students to take part in and enjoy. All festivals are celebrated with utmost enthusiasm. We even have a freshers party that was covered by MTV last year.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fee structure is you have to pay semester wise. It is feasible. About 60-70k per semester. For NRI students they have to pay for the entire year. which is 5-7lacs per year. Students have to pay for their own material which is the only added cost of the course.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There are scholarships for domicile students i think. Other than that, merit cum need scholarships do exist. Not sure about loan.

Campus Life :

Campus Life at NIFT is great because the people are very accepting of one another. 90% of NIFT is girls. We have theatre music sports literary and a few other clubs that students can join and take part in. We have an annual inter NIFT fest for extra curricular activities. There are people from every walk of life and they are all accepted here.

Alumni/Alumna :

There are facebook groups for the alumni network that keep posting jobs for freshers. Senior students are helpful and getting internships.

Exam Structure :

60 marks are for internals and 40 marks for external. For internals we have various assignments or presentations throughout the semester that we have to complete on time and submit to be marked. At the end of the semester we have a written test or a jury depending on which subject it is. A jury is basically a review of all of your work done throughout the semester.

Admission :

Once you clear the 2 exams, you are given a rank. Based on your rank, you are given a date on which you have to appear to any NIFT campus near you for counselling. The students are called one by one as per their rank and they can choose from whatever seats and branches are available at the time. Then you have to get your original documents attested and pay the fee to be enrolled in the college.

Faculty :

The faculty of our college is very experienced and friendly. They are amazing at what they do and very knowledgeable. The senior faculty also has great contacts that help the students. More than anything they are very understanding and open minded and students can talk to them about anything.

The college has excellent faculty very friendly and cooperative and they only take students according to teacher and student ratio per teacher 2 - 3 students which is pretty good management is also pretty cooperative exams are not that hard if you have a nice portfolio and have previously prepared for design.

Placement Experience:

A student gets an insight into the real world at 3 stages during the course: 1. The 1 month NGO internship in the third year of college. 2. The 6 month industry internship during the fourth year of college 3. Placements post graduation At each stage, the college assists the students and brings in a list of places they could apply to. Students also have the choice to decide for themselves and apply directly in case they wish to do so.

There are campus interviews. The internships are provided through interviews and there is placement guarantee provided by the college. But getting and keeping the internship is in the hand of students. I'm also planning to do an internship in my 3rd yr.

Well, I'm still completing the degree course in fashion designing. Second-year student. After 4 years of completion, there is an internship we will get in the industries or infamous companies. Plans would be, I would do masters in a broad want to learn more and firstly, do a job then be an entrepreneur. As per good percentage, we will get nice placements.

I took the NID Entrance Test. MITID was the only design college I could opt for since all other college application deadlines were past. I decided very late that i wanted to get into design and not engineering or medicine. I don't remember my exact score but I topped the personal interview as well as the studio round.

I had given AIEEE and MHTCET entrance examination. The college is very well known in Maharashtra. I was interested in this course only. This was the only college choice of mine for the course.

Admission:

Admission process was through DTE. CAP rounds were scheduled before which we have to fill our all details and get it verified at ARC centre with original documents. Then fill the option form, and wait for the results. I got selected in cap round after which I confirmed my admission at the college.
