How is NIT Surathkal metallurgy?

DN
Debarati Nag Posted On : April 13th, 2021
Studied National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

Metallurgy at NIT Surathkal is a very good branch as there is a rising requirement of materials science and engineering and their number of students taking admission in this branch is comparatively less than other branches like Civil, Mechanical or Electrical so you can expect less competition in this field.

Categories

Metallurgy at NIT Surathkal

Course Fee

1.85 lakh

Placement Percentage

54%

Average CTC

7 LPA

The course is really good and it gives a strong base to the students for their higher studies which is quite important in this field. The department is now called Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and it focuses more on materials engineering. The professors here are very good at their job and are enthusiastic about teaching. They teach very well and create an interest among the students.

The facilities are not that great but are good enough as an engineering college. There is one SEM and XRD, metallurgy lab, materials testing lab, and a good heat treatment lab. The placement records are quite good too and it exposes you to various companies so you can secure a job in both core and non-core companies.

Have I made the right decision by dropping the BITS Pilani EEE branch for IIT Madras for metallurgy?

MA

In my opinion, you have made the right decision by dropping the PITS Pilani EEE branch for IIT Madras Metallurgy. My cousin was forced to take IIT Madras Metallurgy by his mother. Initially, he was disappointed but his mother advised him to continue with the same enthusiasm he cleared JEE. Many students after getting admission relax and this opens opportunities for those who continue to slog even after admission.

Your ultimate goal should be to change your branch for which you will have to work hard. This can be done by staying among the top 5% of the batch with around 9 CGPA. You can switch to Mechanical and even to Electrical sometimes with a good CGPA. All you have to do is

  • Focus on your subjects
  • Do well in the tutorials
  • Perform well on quiz
  • Ace your practicals
  • Score high in the Final semester exam

IIT Madras has a plethora of subjects to choose from in addition to a dual degree. You can change your branch provided your academic performance is at par with the requirements in the 3rd year. Some other highlights that might convince you further to choose IIT Madras are

  • Creative clubs like C5 help in harnessing skills in your area of interest. These clubs have made amazing innovations and you can always learn so much by being a part of them.
  • The unique Research Park which is the IIT Madras incubation center
  • Extracurricular activities such as Yoga, 5-star Gym, long-distance running, etc.
  • The Institute operates under the leadership of highly learned alumni and so are most of the Deans.
  • Air-conditioned Central library that is stacked with resources

All these are unique to IIT Madras and thus it’s a better option than BITS Pilani.

Should I go for civil engineering or metallurgy and material science engineering in NIT Trichy?

SP
Sreeja Prasad Posted On : August 31st, 2021
Dual degree from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (2021)

I would suggest you go for metallurgy if you plan to do a job right after completing your degree. Metallurgy has more job opportunities to offer. With Metallurgy, you can easily learn coding and go for tech companies. NIT Trichy has a great coding culture, so picking up coding skills will not be difficult.

If you plan to prepare for civil services or any other government job, I would suggest you go for civil engineering.

When compared to metallurgy, there are fewer job opportunities in the civil department.

If you plan on doing an MBA after having done your engineering, you can opt for either of them because then it does not matter anyway.

What should I take, metallurgy and material science at IIT Indore or electrical at IIT Bhilai?

NT

I think the branch matters more than the institute and that being said personally I feel IIT Bhilai Electrical is a better option than IIT Indore Material Science. The small batch size enables you to make the most out of the opportunities and resources. The points below further prove my opinion

Here is a small list of things why you should consider IIT Bhilai:

  • The professors come from IIT Hyderabad, one of the most reputed and well-regarded new IITs.
  • The fractal system is followed here giving you a more flexible academic palette.
  • The core subjects are introduced in the first semester itself so that students can identify their interests early.
  • IIT Bhilai EE lab is one of the very few labs in India which is Cloud Connected.
  • There are 20 All-in-ones that have 8-core i7 processors in the EE lab.
  • The institute has vibrant campus life with dynamic student activities going on such as 6 cultural clubs and 3 tech clubs.
  • The Electronics Club of IIT Bhilai Is well-equipped and enables you to experiment with various modules like GPS module, GPRS module, accelerometer, etc

Overall, taking IIT Bhilai will not disappoint you and you will have a plethora of opportunities here.

What are the placement prospects of a student pursuing a B.Tech in metallurgy and materials engineering in IIT Madras?

AB
Aarti Bora Posted On : March 30th, 2023
IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore

My friend graduated from IIT Madras a few months ago and was devastated by the placement scenario of her branch. It almost seems that only Electrical and Computer Science students were eligible for decent placements, rest all suffered.

Talking about Metallurgy specifically, he did not find a single core company visiting the campus for placements almost as if the branch was non-existent. He was told to maintain a good CGPA of 7-8+ for core roles but no core company visited.

In case you are looking for a high-paying non-core job, which is the case for most IITians, you will have to appear for several written and online exams not related to your specialization. You will have to make a good resume by including extra skills, developing your personality, and going the extra mile in your academics to achieve a high-paying job.

Concludingly, Metallurgy has little or no core job prospects so you will have to work hard to get non-core jobs.

How is materials science & metallurgical engineering in MANIT Bhopal?

KP

Materials Science and Metallurgy is a good branch. It has huge career prospects in R&D. One can also opt for higher studies post a B.Tech in Metallurgy.

This branch deals with the science of materials. One gets to study the extraction of metals and their refining & purification. The Department of Metallurgy at MANIT Bhopal is quite good. It allows ample time to prepare for GATE. Upon cracking GATE, one can get a job in PSUs like Vizag, IOCL, SAIL, etc.

The department professors are good and supportive. They encourage the students to grab new opportunities in the field of Metallurgy. The placement figures for B.Tech Metallurgy aren’t as good as B.Tech CSE/ECE. The average package is 5–6 LPA, and the highest package touches 8–9 LPA. About 60–70% of the students receive campus placement.

Materials Science and Metallurgy is a good branch, given that one shows interest in it. It offers ample study time to prepare for competitive exams on the side.
