Panjab University has a total of 8 boy's hostels and 10 girl's hostels (including 1 NRI hostel). Hostels are assigned to the students based on their AIR or by category. These rooms are two-tiered and Rooms on a guest basis are also available.

Now, let's take a look at the current state of boy's hostels, starting with the best.

• Hostel 8, in all respects, is the best in terms of distance from the college (roughly a 50-meter walk) and the majority of the hostilities are from UIET itself, with some students from the BDS and MBA departments. 
• The food served in the mess is average, but it is better than that served in some other hostels. The only disadvantage of living here is that the main university (AC Joshi Library, StuC Food Point) is nearly 1.6 kilometers away. 
• Hostel Nos. 1, 2, and 3 will be a pleasant journey for you here at PU. It has all the advantages that a hostel should have, such as being close to the market, the StuC, the AC Joshi Library, and the mess here is quite pleasant (one the finest in PU). The food is about as good as it gets at home. The only issue with these hostels is the huge distance from college, i.e. 2.2 km. 
• The other hostels are all the same. As far as known, they are the average ones.

Bus and e-rickshaw services are also available there for transportation. 

At Thapar University, the branch change does not depend on your CGPA. There is a separate process for the same.

• The 1st year students have to give a December Test by the end of their 1st semester. The syllabus for this test is general class 12 PCM and the subjects covered in the 1st semester.
• A list ranking all the students appearing for this test is made. Based on this list, a counseling session is held to fill in the vacant seats in all the branches.
• In case of a tie, JEE Rank is given preference. 

So, if you are desperate to get your branch changed at Thapar University, all you need to do is prepare well for this particular test. 

I know a few people from UIET Chandigarh. Here are some of the things that they find bothersome. 

• Practicals and experiments in labs are limited to the course syllabus and even in some cases the methods and equipment to perform the given set of instructions to get the desired result are outdated as compared to the latest technology.
• Lack of proficient faculty/teachers, who can make the particular subjects more exciting. Existing teachers can not even be enabled to build one’s interest in an already interesting subject like Artificial intelligence. 
• There is a lack of proper conversations and interaction among the students to coordinate and help each other in study and in other tasks as well. 

In all above negative points, there is something positive which came forward is that you get a lot of free time to prepare for any competitive exams there as students of this college require only 75% of total attendance and if you are having less than it, the party people and students union compel authorities to make you sit for the exams.

It is difficult to choose which institute is superior and which is inferior since UIET and Chandigarh University are very different.

• UIET is a Govt. funded institute. It is affiliated with Panjab University and follows the same curriculum.
• Chandigarh University is a private university and offers a tailor-made curriculum for engineering branches.
• CU has a stellar placement record. It is good for research and offers exposure in multi-dynamic fields. 
• CU offers residential facilities on campus.
• CU is especially known for the Mechanical Engineering program. It has a reputation on a national level. Students of CU perform well in Robo-war, Formula Car Racing, Tech Events. The department has a dedicated group of highly experienced faculty members. 

Mechanical Engineering is one of the diverse engineering branches and offers great experiences and exposure in multi-disciplinary areas. The suggestion will be if you are choosing a branch of engineering, choose the best.

University Institute Of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Chandigarh is known for being a part of Panjab University which is among the top-ranked universities in India.

Below are some facts about UIET:

• The ECE branch of UIET is particularly good. As its scope is increasing in a few years, this will provide a reliable future.
• The faculty members are highly experienced especially for the ECE branch.
• The seniors are cooperative.
• The infrastructure is quite good.
• Student elections also take place.

Aside from academics, there are a lot of things in UIET which make life amazing like the Annual cultural fest GOONJ which is the most eagerly awaited event at UIET. Overall the student will enjoy being a part of UIET.

Applications for hostels are submitted at the time of physical reporting. Filling up the forms is done during the counseling. It hardly takes 2-3 days till the final list of hostel allotments is verified and notified.

Following are the criteria needed to be met:

• You will get a sit on the basis of your rank and category (SC, ST, EWS, Others). Last rankers do not get hostel even in the final year.
• Every stream is provided with equal seats. The lower your rank, the higher your preference you receive.
• Quota (SC, ST, OBC) plays an important role in your preference over non- quotas.
• Political help can also work. You can put your issues out to some party and they would willingly help you in getting into the hostel.
• You can stay on a guest basis but you will have to pay more than the actual residents.
