My sister was allotted 3rd floor as a fresher at Kailash hostel, at IIT Delhi. She was a bit disappointed at the time that there was no lift facility, and she had to carry her entire luggage all by herself.

She shared a two-seater room with two other girls because of lack of accommodation facilities. She and her roommates somehow made space for three beds and three table-chairs in that small room. The room was barely left with any space to move around. Thankfully, they got a balcony in which my sister managed to keep her cupboard. The room did not have any space for a cooler, and the hostel had a common washroom. A lack of cooler was very upsetting for her because of the harsh Delhi summers.

During her final year, got a single occupancy room on the ground floor, in the same hostel. But the room was still quite small, and she could barely fit in her clothes and shoes in the given space. The washrooms were still common.

Even though she fondly remembers her days at IIT Delhi, she is always vocal about her disappointment with the accommodation facilities of one of the premiere institutions of our country.

IIT Delhi has 13 hostels in total, 11 boys and 2 girls. The hostels are well-equipped with all basic amenities. There are 24*7 water supply, electricity, and internet facilities. Most of the hostels have 3-4 floors and there are no lifts. Two of the hostels are newly constructed. These have lifts and better water facilities.

IIT Delhi hostel rooms are clean and well-maintained. But students need t clean their rooms by themselves. There are washrooms attached to each rooms. Washrooms are cleaned daily.

The mess timing is fixed. But the night canteen stays open until 3:30 am.

There are generally two types of rooms in IIT Delhi hostels.

  1. Big rooms that are meant for two or three students.
  2. Small rooms for one or two occupancies.

Due to the increasing number of students every year new hostels are made and in old hostels, two students live in rooms meant for a single person and three students share the room made for two-person. New hostels are made to meet the IIT standards but old hostels are quite congested and in need of maintenance.

The facilities in the hostel rooms include Fan, LAN port, Charging socket, Almirah, Bed, Table, and Chair. Bathrooms are common. There are water filters on the ground floor. If you get a room near the Wi-Fi router then you can enjoy high-speed internet. The night canteen stays open till 3:30 a.m. and breakfast is served at 7:15 a.m. The food provided in the mess is hygienic.

Hostels also have a big student hall, garden, badminton court, TT room, and other facilities.
