Questions Asked On IMS BHU, Varanasi

Which college should I choose: IMS BHU or KGMU Lucknow?

MBBS from Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (2025)

It is suggested that you go for IMS BHU over KGMU Lucknow. Here are some reasons to support this statement.

  • IMS BHU is a central institution, while KGMU is under the State Government.
  • It has only 100 students while KGMU has 250 students. The competition is balanced when there are lesser students.
  • It has an internal PG reservation (50%) while KGMU has a State reservation (50%).
  • IMS BHU being central offers more Stipend (INR 23,500) as compared to KGMU (INR 7500).
  • If you prefer western culture you will like Lucknow more than Varanasi. Though this varies among everyone.
  • KGMU has a rural service bond of 2 years for UG which is the major drawback. However, it has a better-maintained campus than IMS BHU.

Overall it can be said that both are brilliant in academics. The campus should not matter much. As these choices could vary from person to person. So choose based on your priorities.

Which college should I choose - IMS BHU or KGMU Lucknow?

In my opinion, IMS BHU is a better option than KGMU Lucknow. Here are a few strong reasons to support my opinion

  • IMS BHU is under the central government, unlike KGMU which is under the State Government. So it’s not affected by the unpredictability of different rules brought by the government.
  • IMS BHU has only a smaller batch size than KGMU which translates to better student-teacher ratio and also more exposure.
  • IMS BHU has an internal PG reservation while KGMU has a State reservation. PG reservation isn’t very appealing because most toppers choose AIIMS.
  • IMS BHU is under the central government so it offers more stipend as compared to KGMU.
  • KGMU has a more urban life while Varanaari offers a more traditional and peaceful life perfect for nature lovers.
  • IMS BHU Medical ranking by Outlook is 2 out of 13 colleges in India in 2023 while that of KGMU is 4 out of 13
  • KGMU’s biggest con is the rural service bond of 2 years for UG while IMS BHU does not have any rural service bond because it is not under the state government.
  • KGMU has a better infrastructure surrounded by a green campus.

Both the colleges are excellent in their own way but if I had to choose one, I would have chosen IMS BHU.

In what order would you rank MAMC, KGMU, AFMC. IMS BHU, CMC and Grant Medical College?

KG

Studied at University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi (2015)

According to the reviews online by the students of these colleges, here’s what the ranking seems to be like:

  • KGMU has mostly been ranked among the top 5 institutions in India. It usually maintained its place in rank 2 or 3. This institution is 125 years old with proper educational experience.
  • AFMC is a very disciplined institution with strict rules and codes of conduct, as it has direct affiliation with Armed forces. Though being well reputed, in academics and exposure it might lag behind.
  • MAMC, Grants Medical College (GMC) and IMS BHU are at a similar level.
  • Some students claim MAMC to be slightly better than AFMC.
  • GMC is very popular in and around Maharashtra.
  • IMS-BHU is autonomous; it has the reputation of BHU tagged along which is beneficial.
  • CMC is amongst the oldest medical colleges, but their severe lack of proper facilities in this college and political disturbances have tarnished its reputation.

Therefore it is suggested you either go for KGMU or MAMC, as they will provide you with the required exposure and opportunities.

I will try to answer your query and provide some additional information.

After the top most colleges- AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SGPGI, these are the colleges you should try for- Medical colleges in Delhi are the best choice. Out of these, MAMC is the most desirable. It is followed by VMMC, LHMC and UCMS. Then come the medical colleges in Mumbai. KEM is a top medical college, followed by Sion and Grant. Colleges of Kerala and Madras are at par with one another. But Madras Medical College is the best among these. AFMC and CMC Vellore are great for patients, but not so much for the students.

Thus, MAMC is a great choice. I do not possess much knowledge of KGMU and IMS BHU, so I haven’t talked about them.

One of my cousins is a student at MAMC Delhi and here are a few highlights of the institute based on the experience she shared.

  1. Education: MAMC Delhi has an excellent academic ambiance that can even motivate the least interested ones.
  2. Location: It’s in close proximity to CP so you can visit cafés during your lunch break, have a sub, and come back. You can jog to the India Gate every morning which is also very close to the campus. Daryaganj is another famous place due to its Sunday book market.
  3. Connectivity : MAMC Delhi has great connectivity to tourist places like Kasol, Mussoorie, etc
  4. Extracurriculars: The college has excellent sports facilities like cricket, basketball, badminton, gym, swimming pool, etc
  5. Library: This is the best part of the college. MAMC Library is uniquely designed and will motivate you to become a nerd and spend your afternoons here.
  6. Campus life: The campus is small but the overall ambiance is quite friendly and gives you the best memories of your life.
  7. Reputation: MAMC enjoys a very good reputation and its Delhi University Quota in PG is another major perk that places it above IMS BHU.

Hope this helps you!

Is it a wise decision to choose IMS BHU over KGMU?

SD

Many people consider IMS BHU better than KGMU due to internal PG. But the truth is internal PG at IMS BHU will only give only a single attempt to get an internal seat at a low rank. Moreover, owing to the rotation system in a particular year, there might be no internal seat for a particular branch for a specific category. If you happen to belong to that particular branch, you will have to be among toppers else you won't be eligible for internal benefit or state quota. KGMU on the other hand, will give you unlimited attempts with a state quota

Also, I feel MBBS is not just about PG, but also about the holistic development of the students. That being said, the IMS tag isn't as valuable as the KGMU tag.

So, I don't think it's wise to choose IMS BHU over KGMU.

If someone got selected in JIPMER, AIIMS JODHPUR, BHU or AFMC then which medical college he/she should prefer to join?

AB

All these medical institutes are well-reputed.

Here are a few facts about each college which will help you make your decision-

AIIMS Jodhpur

  1. AIIMS Jodhpur was established in 2021 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI
  2. It ranks 16 in the NIRF India Rankings 2022: Medical
  3. AIIMS Jodhpur is newly established in comparison to the other institutions that you have mentioned. Therefore, it should not come as your topmost priority.

AFMC

  1. AFMC is the way to go if you aim to serve in the Indian Armed Forces
  2. If you wish to complete your PG just after your MBBS and have a problem with the bond of AFMC, you should not opt for JIPMER

JIPMER

  1. JIPMER is a central government college
  2. It has a good infrastructure and well-established departments
  3. For students from the northern parts, the location of JIPMER (Pondicherry) might be a negative point in terms of its distance from their hometown

IMS BHU, Varanasi

  1. It is a well-reputed medical college, no less than JIPMER
  2. It is located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh
  3. If the location of JIPMER does not suit you, you can go for IMS BHU

The individual should, ultimately, choose after thoroughly considering location, fee structure, and personal priorities.

Currently, which would be a better choice, IMS BHU, AIIMS Bhopal or AIIMS Jodhpur?

AJ

My sister got selected for all the 3 aforementioned institutes and was confused for a long time before making her final decision. She weighed the pros and cons of all the 3 institutes; IMS BHU, AIIMS Bhopal, and AIIMS Jodhpur, and realized that IMS BHU has the benefit of internal PG reservation but was very lacking in terms of hostel facilities. That was a factor she wasn't willing to overlook so she looked upon AIIMS Bhopal and got to know about its fast-paced development and excellent hostel facilities.

Here is a glimpse of the medical college

This is the AIIMS Bhopal hostel that provides well-furnished single rooms to its students.

AIIMS Bhopal

AIIMS Bhopal seemed to be the most promising option for her and she was excited to experience the freedom there and ended up choosing it. As for you, you can consider your proximity to home as a crucial determining factor. If you hail from UP, IMS BHU can be a suitable choice for you else AIIMS Bhopal and Jodhpur are excellent options.

Why did you choose KGMU over IMS BHU and AIIMS Rishikesh?

AA
Aarti Ahuja Posted On : June 11th, 2023
Lives in Rishikesh

My friend got selected in all the 3 institutes; KGMU, IMS BHU, and AIIMS Rishikesh but chose KGMU as her first preference. She had no personal grudge against AIIMS Rishikesh but there were quite a few reasons why she did not choose IMS BHU

  • My friend was from Varanasi and she did not want to be distracted by her family and so to cut off all distractions, she refused to continue her studies there.
  • There are many flaws with the institute that go undiscovered y many but being from the same city, she did have an idea.
  • She was eager to experience a life beyond her home city and experience different cultures.

However, her decision of choosing one over the other was solely influenced by her personal inclinations. She did not find any major differences except the rural service bond which she was ready to sacrifice. She did not give much thought to AIIMS Rishikesh as it was a new institute at that time although it has grown exponentially over the years so you can give it preference too.

Ultimately, there is no major difference in each of these institutes academically and it is all based on your personal indications.

Which is better: IMS BHU or Grant Medical College?

SS
Sebanti Samaddar, Posted On : November 25th, 2021
MBBS from Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals (2023)

Both IMS BHU and Grant Medical College (GMC) are among the best medical colleges of India. As one of my friends studied in IMS BHU, I am familiar with the institute.

  • It is a lot better than GMC, as it is a central university which receives a lot of funds. This goes to the development of the institution.
  • They have well constructed laboratories with all the necessary updated facilities.
  • Their hostels are spacious.
  • The crowd is very welcoming and accepting.
  • They have lower fees, no bond or reimbursement and also offer internal postgraduate seats.
  • Students here get the proper opportunity to do their research work.

GMC is overrated. It has average infrastructure. The most important thing that diminished its popularity is the internal politics and compulsory bond by Maharashtra government. Though they have a good location, IMS BHU tops its academics and the opportunities provided to their students.
