Studies at IIT Roorkee

Both EE at IIT Kanpur and CSE at IIT Roorkee are well-recognized academic institutions in India. However, the choice between EE at IIT Kanpur and CSE at IIT Roorkee completely depends on your career goals and preferences.

  • IIT Roorkee is a better choice as it is one of the oldest institutions and holds 5th rank by NIRF ranking in 2023.
  • The total course fee for 4 years of BTech CSE is INR 893400.
  • The placement opportunity offered by IIT Roorkee is very positive.
  • The highest package offered to students is INR 2.03 CPA by the company Databricks.
  • Top companies recruiting are American Express, Google, Microsoft, Reliance Industries and more.

Studied at IIT Kanpur (Graduated 2022)

It depends on your interest but to reach a decision let me help you with some points:-

  • Taking EE at Kanpur remains a better option than CSE at Roorkee because of placement stats and relatively chill academics there giving you a better CPI and a good way to explore yourself more.
  • IIT Kanpur has a NIRF ranking of 4th while IIT Roorkee has a ranking of 5th.
  • As of 2023, the average salary at IIT Kanpur EE branch is 26.27 LPA, while the average salary for IIT Roorkee's CSE branch is 27 LPA, so there is not much difference.
  • More than 250 companies like Microsoft, Fujitsu, Samsung, Reliance, and Goldman Sachs visited IIT Kanpur campus in 2023.
  • Electrical engineering gives you a chance in both government and private sectors.
  • The best part is that if later you find out you lack interest in EE, you can always switch to Software Engineering.

The ‘better’ program between EE at IIT Kanpur and CSE at IIT Roorkee depends on your own preferences and no one can decide it for you. However, here are a few points that might help you make a more informed decision.

CSE

This branch is for those whose priority is to find a high-paying job and earn money as soon as possible. However, it’s important to note that without a sincere interest in programming, you might end up in a deep hole of regret. Money can motivate you but only for a while. You cannot work in a field that you aren’t interested in for a very long time.

If you only care about the package, then this is the best option you have. More Hard work you do, the more you get. You might find it difficult to switch fields later.

EE

Not to disappoint you, but your payment will be less than CS students so be prepared. The best part is that if later you find out you lack interest in EE, you can always switch to Software Engineering. Another option is working for the government for which you can go for IES. However, the majority of the students prefer non-core jobs just for the sake of high packages. I know a friend who did his EE from IIT Roorkee and today works at a tech giant with a salary of more than 80–90% of CS students. So it all depends on the individual and his determination to excel rather than his branch.
