As a second year B.Tech Mechanical Student at IIT Bhubaneswar, I can provide some insight on the benefits of joining my college for this particular course:

  1. IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its strong focus on research and innovation, and it has a well-established reputation for its mechanical engineering.
  2. IIT Bhubaneswar has a strong faculty with diverse research interests.
  3. The institute emphasises interdisciplinary research and it has several labs dedicated to mechanical engineering.

Here are some other factors like ranking, fee, and placement for comparing Mechanical Engineering at the three IITs:

Parameter IIT Bhubaneswar IIT Gandhinagar IIT Mandi
NIRF 2024 Engineering Ranking 26 8 20
Total Tuition Fees  INR 8 lakh INR 8 lakh INR 8 lakh
Average Package INR 12.57 LPA INR 19.60 LPA INR 15.96 LPA
Median Package INR 15 LPA INR 9 LPA INR 14.10 LPA

All the 3 IITs namely IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Mandi are well-regarded institutions that offer excellent education in mechanical engineering. However, the best choice for you depends not on the institute but on what you are looking for in your degree. Here’s where your personal preferences and goals come into play.

  • IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its strong focus on research and innovation, and has a well-established reputation for its mechanical engineering program
  • IIT Gandhinagar is a newer institution, but it has quickly established itself as a leader in engineering education and research. The mechanical engineering program at IT Gandhinagar is highly regarded for its emphasis on hands-on learning.
  • IIT Mandi is a relatively new institution, but it has quickly established itself as a leader in engineering education and research.

The table below provides a head-on comparison between the 3 IITs

Among these, IIT Bhubaneswar is a better choice for Mechanical Engineering. The institute has an excellent Mechanical Engineering branch. There are good lab facilities and workshops. It also has a Design Innovation Center (DIC), where students can work on their own projects. During IIT Bhubaneswar placements 2022, Mechanical students received an average CTC of INR 15.14 LPA. While the highest CTC for the branch was INR 32 LPA.

Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bhuvaneswar is definitely a better choice than IIT Gandhinagar or IIT Mandi. The mechanical engineering department of IIT Bhuvaneswar is quite renowned and is probably the best among the three institutes mentioned. It includes revered faculty from IIT Kharagpur who are very well versed in their fields. Furthermore, the institute also started Dual degree programs (B.TECH plus MTECH) recently in Mechanical Engineering. The department also has well-furnished labs updated with the latest testing equipment. The school of Mechanical Sciences at IIT Bhuvaneswar also provides a myriad of opportunities for students through the Design Innovation Centre(DIC). Here students can exhibit their skills through proficiency in making drones as well as showcasing their strengths in the field of Robotics.

On the contrary, IIT Gandhinagar, although having taken great leaps forward, is still an evolving IIT. Besides, the placement scenario at IIT Gandhinagar in the mechanical engineering department is not as lucrative as IIT Bhuvaneswar. The average salary package offered in IIT Gandhinagar in 2019 was around 8.29 LPA. Whereas the average placement package offered at IIT Bhubaneswar was around 11.4 LPA. Besides, IIT Bhuvaneswar actively organizes Lab fest in Mechanical Engineering department, an event that is not so active in other IITs. IIT Mandi’s course curriculum is quite flexible and this IIT also offers good placement. There was 61.11% placement from Mechanical Engineering in 2019. However, the faculty is not as good as in IIT Bhuvaneswar.
