IEM Kolkata faculties are good. The professors of the institute are well-experienced and cooperative. You can get their help in any doubt you have. The faculty base of IEM includes notable personalities like Prof. Kamakhya Prasad Ghatak. He is quite popular among students.
Compared to other private engineering institutes in West Bengal, IEM Kolkata has a better faculty base.
My sister graduated from IEM Kolkata in June 2016 and she is now working as a consultant at KPMG. She shared some of her experiences and the basic do’s and don'ts she followed while studying there.
Maintaining good grades is very important because students with lower grades are considered not capable enough for placements in top popular companies. They can sit for placements at non IT companies though. Students with lower grades don't get good opportunities in the college so one must maintain above average grade in his/her subjects, to secure a placement or even opt for higher studies.
The top recruiting companies that participate in their placement program include, Google, Microsoft, Accenture, Capgemini, L&T, Wipro, TCS, Mindtree and many more.
IEM Kolkata IT will be comparably better. Although IEM has pretty strict rules in place, it offers better opportunities in terms of academics and placements. According to the stats of recent IEM placements, each year around 90% of students get placed each year from IT. The highest CTC for the branch is INR 40 LPA.
Heritage Institute of Technology is a good option, if you want to pursue research or MS, further.
My brother is from IEM Kolkata, so, I can help you with this. The dress code is as follows.
The dress code at IEM is very strict. You must maintain that from first to final year.
IEM is best for its non-core (CSE/IT/ETC/ECE) placements comparatively that of core ones (CIVIL/MECHANICAL/ ELECTRICAL). Situated in the heart of the IT sector business area the companies visiting the campus for recruitment are mainly software companies.
The IT sector has seen a slump, the core placement doesn’t reach up to the mark. But, if you do choose electrical you may have an extra opportunity to sit in both the core and non-core.
But choosing a branch totally depends upon you. If you really like CS or IT there is no reason to not to choose IEM; or any other branch you like. After all, it’s you who is going to adapt the particular field and enhance yourself in it in four years of time.
I sincerely hope you take the right decision and choose the branch which is best for you and not go with the flow and take the branch which stats say is the best branch in IEM.
One of my friends was enrolled in this institute. She chose to study Chemical at BIT Mesra over ECE at IEM.
Through her 4 years of the course, she concluded BIT being better in nearly every aspect from academics, placements, extracurriculars, infrastructure, sports and ends finally at the reputation of the overall institute. Thus, it sums up your choice.

The only upper hand that IEM enjoys is the scores of CGPA a student obtains. That means, acquiring the best CGPA at IEM is quite a lot easier than what is at BIT. The second point of difference between the two of them is that IEM, when considered its location, is situated in Salt Lake, Kolkata, and is much better developed than Mesra, which in total is 16 KMs from Ranchi. These are the only points of difference as known.

Hence, if students have a good JEE score and are eligible to get into IIEST, it would be advisable to do so instead of choosing a private institution such as IEM- based on the factors mentioned above.
Here is some information to assist you in choice-making-
Snapdeal, Amazon, Google, etc. visit IIEST Shibpur and offer equal placement opportunities to both IT and CSE students. My roommate from IT got into Snapdeal through campus placement.
IEM isn’t a well-known college. It is a local college unlike IIEST, which is an institute of national importance. The campus size of IEM is very small. Big companies don’t usually visit small colleges like IEM.
The college tag has a value of its own. Besides, the opportunities and exposure offered by IIEST are immense.
Thus, I would recommend you opt for IT at IIEST Shibpur.
As I know some people from these institutes you mentioned above, it will be clearer to base their ideas upon the rankings on different factors.
