A number of central government PSUs and other government firms hire Electrical Engineers. Some of these government institutions include- ISRO, DRDL, BHEL, PGCL etc. Therefore, for government jobs both Civil and Electrical Engineering from Thapar University are a good option.
However, for private sector jobs, Electrical Engineering from Thapar University is a better option. Even for research opportunities, Electrical is a better option than Civil Engineering. In areas like wireless power transmission, solar efficiency improvement, etc. a breakthrough will fetch you a lot of patents.
Go for Civil if you are genuinely interested in this branch. You can also go for research in this field. But for Civil, the importance of R&D in the Indian market is quite low. Internships will be difficult for you to get in this branch and switching to software is not easy. The Civil coursework will not challenge you and you might develop laziness. However, as a Civil Engineer, if you have a few contacts and can establish your own firm, you will make good money.
As far as streams are concerned, Electrical is a better option than Civil. However, I would suggest you talk to Thapar University alums to figure out which branch gets more placement offers at Thapar. You should find out which branch has a better faculty and placement offers before making a choice.
Since you haven’t mentioned the branch you are interested in, I will assume you have no particular preference. Now, the primary factor to consider is if you value the brand of the college or the branch of your choice. Consider the following points
The best option would be to choose IIT Dhanbad CSE. It’s true that it won’t offer the opportunities and exposure that the top 5 IITs would but for me branch is more important than the brand name of the college. So, choose according to your preferences.
With no specific area of interest, the best option for you is IIT Delhi Biotechnology. Here are a few points to support my opinion
IIT Delhi is the dream college of many owing to the excellent brand name and opportunities it offers. Trust me, once you are inside your branch will hardly matter.

Your choice can be based either on the branch or on college.
NIT Surathkal is a better choice than NIT Calicut and NIT Durgapur. As far as placements are concerned, they aren’t any better for Civil or Chemical either. It is always more beneficial to go for branches like ECE, CSE, IT and EEE from a placement point of view.

In case you have a branch preference, go for that option. With an interest in your branch, you’ll eventually pave a path for yourself. It is possible that you have no particular branch preference.Your ultimate goal might be an MBA, for which you’re simply seeking a B.Tech degree. In that case, choose Mining at NIT Surathkal.
While CE, IT, and ECEC are among the best branches of NIT Kurukshetra, the Civil branch is the worst. Its poor placement scenario has tainted its reputation and things are going to get better. Only the top 30 students get to appear for written tests of core companies and the packages offered are in the range of 3-4 LPA. The in-hand salary is as low as 25k per month or even less.

If you have already taken civil or you are taking civil because you have no other choice, start preparing for other things. You can study advanced formulas in Excel and start preparing for CAT. Most non-core companies require great communication skills and basic knowledge of Office tools. A few non-core companies visited once a month that allowed all students to sit for placements. Make sure to prepare well for their interview.
Overall, the construction sector is one of the worst sectors in India. Even those places in core companies face serious issues so consider everything before joining this branch.
Comparing a dormant branch like Civil with the most coveted branch CSE isn’t a very logical way of getting an idea of the placement scenario. Every student of the CSE branch ends up with a core job so its placement scenario is incomparable. Civil Engineering despite having a low demand has a decent number of core positions recruited.
Nowadays, the youth is not interested in joining PSUs mainly because of their low pay in comparison to software companies. Most civil engineering students are interested in core positions so the numbers in non-core aren't that great. Moreover, the number of students interested in MS, CAT, and GATE is growing every year affecting the placement statistics largely.

The statistics don’t exactly convey the students' intention. In reality, most students are able to secure a job in their desired field, and only a few fail to do so.
NIT Patna is a highly reputed institution in India for civil engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering offers courses at the UG, PG, and PhD levels. The faculty members are highly qualified and have a good mix of experience and youth. Consider the following circumstances
NIT Patna is well known for its Civil Engineering branch. In fact, the main building of NIT Patna is the Civil Department. The department has highly experienced faculties who are genuinely passionate about civil engineering.
Hope this helps you!
As a Civil Engineering student, I will dissuade you from pursuing this branch. You might be considering Civil for the tag of IITs, NITs or BITS. The campus placement scenario is not good for Civil and you will be left to either pursue an MS abroad or prepare for GATE/ESE. Both these options have nothing to do with the college tag. You can get an IT job through campus placements, but core jobs are highly difficult to grab. Also, the salary you will be offered in core jobs will not be at par with your NITian tag. Practically speaking, to crack GATE and ESE is more difficult than to crack JEE Mains because of one’s age group at this point. Other government exams are highly irregular and can not be depended upon.
For an average student, it is better to go for CSE or Electronics at an average NIT/ other college. The scenario is not pleasant for Core branches, especially Civil, in India. However, if you are passionate about pursuing Civil, its official placement figures for 2022 are provided by NIT Calicut.

I suggest you consult with the seniors and alumni of the Civil branch of NIT Calicut to get a clearer understanding of the ground reality. Go ahead with this branch if you are passionate about it, otherwise choose among the Circuit branches.
My sister was in the batch of (2014-18) at IIEST Shibpur. There were 84 students in her batch, 19 chose a dual degree, and about 60 students were eligible for placements. The major recruiters were M.N Dastur, ZS Associates, HSBC, CGI information systems and management consultants, etc.
The recent placement highlights for Civil Engineering at the institute are as follows.
Placement Average |
75% |
Highest CTC |
12 LPA |
Lower CTC |
3.5 LPA |
Job Roles |
Graduate Engineer Trainee, Junior Structural Designer |
This is the placement scenario of the Civil branch at IIEST Shibpur. The number of students applied for placements also matters. Due to their training for GATE, ESE or CAT, etc, or simply the lack of interest in private work, there are a number of students who don’t appear willingly on-campus placement.
