How's life at NIT Rourkela?
Campus life at NIT Rourkela is one of the best you can experience in India. The infrastructure is amazing and the college spreads across a whopping 1200 acres.
- The hostel rules are very flexible with no restrictions on the timings. Students can even hang out late at night with their friends riding their bicycles and taking in the fresh air.
- With enjoyment comes a huge load of responsibilities that make you self-dependent. The students have weekends off so Friday nights are highly cherished.
- The club culture here speaks highly of the institute's diversity. There are around 60 clubs each promoting a different theme.
- Garden fests and hall days ensure a vibrant campus life and you will end up creating some of the best memories here.
- NIT Rourkela organizes some very amazing fests like the Annual tech-fest, INNOVISION, and NITRUTSAV, the cultural fest.
In addition to all the fun activities, you will have to maintain a good CGPA for better placements.
How is life of a student in NIT Rourkela?
A close friend of mine completed her MTech from NIT Rourkela and shared her overall experience of time spent at the institute
- NIT Rourkela has a massive and beautiful campus with a plethora of facilities like swimming pools, night canteens, day canteen, tea stalls, playgrounds, basketball arena, volleyball areas, and badminton courts in each hostel.
- NIT Rourkela has a hardworking placement cell that not only brings in some of the best recruiters but also trains the students well for the placement season. Students receive excellent offers in both core and non-core placements.
- NIT Rourkela has a healthy competitive environment that fuels the students’ passion to study harder. They are aware of being a part of the top 5 NITs and are ready to showcase their knowledge and skills to prove their worth.
- The accommodation facilities provided to NIT Rourkela students are great. Students are allotted both double and single occupancy rooms, with mess and other facilities.
NIT Rourkela students experience a smooth campus life and most of their needs are taken care of.
Is NIT Allahabad or NIT Rourkela better?
It entirely depends on which branch you are choosing. If you are getting CSE or IT at NIT Allahabad, go for it. It will be the better option because of the placement opportunities available. For any other branches, you can choose either of these two institutes. The campus of NIT Rourkela is better than NIT Allahabad.
What is your review of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT-RKL)?
A friend at NIT Rourkela gave me a detailed review of her college the last time she visited me. Here are some highlights from her descriptive experience
- NIT Rourkela has a huge, serene, and well-secured campus.
- The institute has diverse clubs that promote extracurricular activities and their performance is better than most clubs of other engineering colleges.
- Decent Internet speed is offered and the Dc++ is well maintained.
- The hostels are well-maintained and decked with all the basic amenities one could ask for.
- Students are actively involved in sports such as gymming and swimming.
- The faculties are a mixed bag. Some are underqualified and lethargic while some motivate you to become a better person.
- The institute boasts of an extensive entrepreneurship culture.
- The institute needs to work on increasing its alumni base and the level of fests it organizes given the huge income the institute generates.
- The placement scenario varies from branch to branch. It's decent for branches like CS while pathetic for others.
- Rourkela does not have any places to explore and also lacks flight connectivity.
- The city of Rourkela is one of the cleanest places so hygiene is not an issue here.

How would you rank the IIITs? Should I prefer IIIT Allahabad or NIT Rourkela?
IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Ahmedabad are the best IIITs and have similar ages. IIIT Hyderabad fairs are better than IIIT Ahmedabad in terms of its coding culture and the kind of job opportunities it provides.
IIIT Hyderabad students must work extra hard and wake up very early for PT. The institute has a record of attracting a better crowd because a lot accepts only top rankers of JEE Main. One of the drawbacks of the institute is that it’s private and therefore charges hefty fees while IIIT Ahmedabad is a government college so it charges lesser fees.
IIIT Ahmedabad has a bit flexible campus life quite similar to other government colleges like IIT and NITs. Additionally, it also has a rich coding culture with amazing job opportunities.
I don’t find any major differences in the curriculum, campus life, and placement scenario of both the institutes so choose the one that aligns with your preferences. As for choosing one between IIIT Allahabad and NIT Rourkela, go for the former without any second thoughts. IIITs are best suited for coding lovers and people passionate about computers. So if you are one of them, go for any IIIT between these two!
How good are the placements at NIT - Warangal/Surathkal/Trichy/Calicut/Rourkela? What are the average packages?
The placement scenario of NIT Warangal, Surathkal, and Trichy is somewhat the same with minor differences only. One of my friends studied at NIT Warangal and shed some light on the placement scenario there. Here is a branch-wise analysis
- CSE : The placements for the CSE branch are the best in NIT Warangal as well as Trichy and Surathkal. Students are placed in huge software giants like Microsoft, D.E.Shaw, Adobe, Directi, Tower Research Capital, Cisco, IBM, and some Investment Bankers like Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley, etc The average package of CSE recorded this year was INR 30.8 LPA for BTech while INR 30.43 LPA for MTech.
- ECE - The companies coming on the first day of placements are Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia, SanDisk India, Redpine Signals, Samsung, and Caterpillar, etc., Software companies like Cisco, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Oracle, etc allow ECE students to sit for placements. The average package for BTech students is INR 23.6 LPA and for MTech students is around NR 20.4 LPA.
- EEE - Companies like Alstom, Reliance, and PSUs like Power Grid, IOCL, HPCL, etc., offer core profiles to EEE students. Additionally, software companies that come for ECE and CSE students also allow EEE students to sit for placements. The average package for EEE is INR 21.19 LPA for BTech students and between 11- 14.6 LPA for MTech students.
- Mechanical Engineering: Companies like Caterpillar, Michelin, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Volvo, Larsen and T0ubro, Vizag Steel Plant(RINL), etc., recruit Mechanical Engineering students of NIT Rourkela. The average package is INR 12.4 LPA for BTech students and between 9-12 LPA for MTech students.
- Chemical Engineering: The Chemical engineering students are usually recruited by companies such as Reliance Industries, Dr.Reddy's Laboratories, Michelin tires, and some PSUs. A few even opt for Management or Consulting companies like MuSigma, Deloitte, IBM, etc., The average package is INR 14.8 LPA for BTech students and between 8-11 LPA for MTech students.
- Civil Engineering - This is one of the oldest NIT Warangal branches that has recruiters like the Sobha developers group etc., Students opt for Management or Consulting companies like MuSigma, Deloitte, and IBM. The average package for BTech students is INR 13 LPA and between 6-8 LPA for MTech students.
Overall, placements are similar in all the 3 NITs, NIT Warangal, Trichy, and Surathkal.
Which one is better, NIT Rourkela or NIT Warangal?
NIT Rourkela and NIT Warangal are among the top NITs. In the NIRF Rankings 2023 for Engineering colleges, NIT Rourkela is at the 16th position while NIT Warangal is at the 21st position.
One of the reasons why NIT R is behind NIT Trichy and NIT Surathkal is because of its poor connectivity. NIT R does not have proper airport and railway facilities. However, the infrastructure and placements at NIT R are top notch and at par with other top Indian Engineering colleges.
Both NIT Rourkela and NIT Warangal are top colleges. It also depends on the branch you get at these two. I would suggest you talk to the alumni from both these colleges before making a final choice.
Which one is better: NIT Rourkela or NIT Warangal?
According to the reviews online, NIT Warangal is much better than NIT Rourkela. It is among the top 3 NITs in India. Warangal has the best CSE and ECE departments. They have a 100% placement record.
NIT Rourkela is also good but not in the same league as Warangal. NIT Rourkela has increased in popularity in recent years and is currently in the league of NIT Allahabad, Jaipur or Calicut. Its main disadvantage is its location and extremely strict attendance rules. But the infrastructure of NIT Rourkela is getting better each day. Due to its location some of the top recruiters do not prefer visiting the college.
The most important thing that makes NIT Warangal better than Rourkela is its moderate course fees and the brilliant placement record.

Thus, choosing NIT Warangal seems to be a better option than going for NIT Rourkela.
Who are the most talented students of NIT, Rourkela?
I have a few friends from NIT, Rourkela, according to them, one of the most talented students is Susnata Roy (Batch of 2010-14). She was the institute topper for her batch. Susnata complete an internship at Microsoft and was offered a PPO. She got a job at Google. In the second year itself, she got the prestigious IAS internship. She is also known for her coding skills.
How is the integrated MSc in physics at NIT Rourkela?
I am well aware of the situation of NIT Rourkela Integrated MSc in Physics since my sister is a student there. She shared her horrible experience and does not recommend it to anyone at all.
- The faculty pool comprises underqualified professors with zero experience and will to reach. They are unapproachable and don’t pay heed to the students' doubts.
- The curriculum is very rigid and students are offered no flexibility in choosing their electives. Rather they are forced to choose subjects that are only relevant to experimental physics.
- Students are required to get the signature of the Faculty Advisor, HOD, Asst. Registrar, and Dean even for the smallest official work.
- The place limits your talents and ambitions so much that all your dreams and talents will be crushed.
My sister regrets wasting 5 precious years on this course and advises everyone to refrain from joining it.
