New Delhi: The Higher Education Department of the West Bengal government granted its consent for the Executive Council Meeting of Jadavpur University, clearing the path for the annual convocation but not the honorary degree event on December 24, according to officials on December 17, 2023.

Concerns about the convocation had risen due to the government's halt on the Executive Council and the court, the Jadavpur University's decision-making bodies. This action followed Governor CV Ananda Bose appointing Professor Buddhadeb Sau as the officiating vice-chancellor without consulting the higher education department.

Why was JU denied to host the Honorary Convocation?

JU does not have a full-term VC and as per the rule, a person who is just in charge of the office of vice-chancellor can not hold any meeting without the state government’s consent. Hence, JU has received a nod only to host its annual convocation whereas the consent for the honorary degree event has been denied.

In an announcement, the department granted permission for the Executive Council (EC) and the court to conduct meetings, focusing solely on discussions and organization related to the convocation, officials stated.

The letter also mentioned that “the meeting of the court and executive council should only discuss matters related to the convocation.”

The notice specified that decisions made in these meetings would need ratification by the regular vice-chancellor, in accordance with rule 3(6) of the West Bengal State Universities Rules 2019, once such an appointment occurs.

However, Professor Buddhadeb Sau declined to comment on the matter. The approval followed a meeting between State Education Minister Bratya Basu, Sau, and Registrar Snehamanju Basu. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association expressed satisfaction with this development.
