Dr. D. Ramana Reddy, the Principal of Viswam Engineering College, is a distinguished academician and able administrator with more than 17 years of experience. He has grown in the ranks of the institute, starting his teaching career as a lecturer in 2006. He obtained his PhD from JNTU Hyderabad and his M.Tech. from IITM. Dr. Reddy has published 25 research papers in various reputed national and international journals, besides having a couple of patents to his credit. You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Constant learning and having to upskill for the current trends is a necessity, which is a principle I abide by. Teaching and research are my passions. Since finishing my Ph.D., I’ve been associated with the education sector. As an educator, I don’t just teach students; I also have to keep upskilling and learn the current trends. This is what motivates me to keep learning and teaching.


The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your university?

There is a difference in India and other foreign countries' education systems. The biggest difference is the focus on education. Internationally, the focus is more on practically learning the course material but the Indian education system is more on bookish knowledge. However, gradually, the Indian education system is also acquiring maturity. Studying at Viswam Engineering College for inbound students is a different experience. Here, nature nurtures young minds to be leaders of the future.


How does the curriculum of DJR College Of Engineering ensure the best practice of industry?

We are always looking into how we can improve our curriculum and keep innovating. Our curriculum is a blend of academic theory and industry practices. We use business simulations, real-time case studies, live projects, and other pedagogical practices to make sure our students are well-equipped to become industry managers and leaders.


What do you think should be the institute's top priority over the next 10 years?

The institute's top priority over the next ten years should be a proper focus on several key areas, such as a curriculum that fulfils the demands of the latest era, the soft skills of students to serve society, subject knowledge expertise, and extracurricular activities. We also want to control the quality of institute delivery through high-quality professionals and to attract the best faculty, an institute needs the best leaders.

When you first came to DJR College of Engineering, what was your vision for the university?

When I first joined, my vision was to provide quality technical education for students. We also want to support and promote students who are not economically strong and students from rural areas.


Has it evolved over time, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?

To implement the vision, we worked for a long time with the cooperation of management, staff and students. We are also offering different financial aid like scholarships and relaxed fee payment structures for the students.


What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

It is a great place to work, and we have cultivated the best environment to be associated with for students. We are one of the best business schools in the region, where students can experience a blend of industry and academic best practises. What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Viswam Engineering College specifically?

The new education policy will bring massive transformations to the education system. It will be challenging for higher education to adopt the new approach to higher education. However, we are working towards eliminating these issues and integrating the policy seamlessly into our curriculum. Our biggest challenges are enrollment declines, budgets, and emerging college alternatives for students to join. We also face issues in recruiting skilled staff.


Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

The pervasive use of electronic gadgets and mobile phones among the youth generation has raised concerns about addiction and potential negative influences. However, it is important to recognise that these devices have the potential to be powerful tools for personal and professional growth when utilised in a positive direction to acquire knowledge. Learn how to use your resources to your advantage. Keep learning and upskilling to remain competitive.


What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing for VISWAM Engineering College international affairs and/or students?

We are currently working on deploying all meaningful technologies to implement a blended learning and assessment system. Viswam Engineering College is working on a plan to improve students' employability skills to meet the challenges. We want our students to not only have the right technical knowledge but also practical skills to work at the workplace along with interpersonal skills.


How do you tend to establish a healthy relation and environment in your institute/ university?

In our organization, we place great importance on cultivating a healthy and harmonious work environment. There are several key factors that contribute to establishing and nurturing this atmosphere of positivity and collaboration. One of the fundamental factors that fosters a healthy relationship among colleagues is trust. We foster and promote communication among all who contribute to this trust. More than communication, we also focus on listening and addressing issues with each other.
