Institute of Technology Nirma University

When you joined ITNU, what was your vision for the institute and how are you trying to achieve the same?

My vision when I joined this amazing institute in 1996 was to give a better future to students by making them responsible, innovative and ethically strong and lead them in gaining state of the art knowledge in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering. And to achieve my goals I am putting my best to practice and nurturing good habits in students, making them punctual, serious and teaching them time management and leadership like skills in order to develop their overall personality. And to strengthen students' academic concepts and inculcate problem solving and analytical skills in them, we have a diverse range of basic to advanced courses. Apart from all this, we regularly motivate our students to take challenges for solving problems of Indian people using the current technologies, like automatic railway crossing, passing information through SMS to Indian farmers for current rate of vegetables, fruits and grains etc.

Being the Professor of ITNU, how do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

For the purpose of ensuring a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects, our college regularly organizes value-added courses not for students but for working professionals, Teaching Fraternity, Scientists and Engineers who belong from reputed industries and research organizations such as SAC ISRO and lastly for research scholars such as PG and PhD students. Apart from this, we have short and long term customized courses of duration 2-4 years for the employees of Tata Motors and L&T etc. We also conduct essential programs and workshops on software tools for enhancing students skills and making them industry ready. Last but not the least, being a Teacher, I always encourage and insist my students to model the wireless systems and evaluate their performances with the help of simulation or mathematical analysis tools because in industries they will rigorously work with these systems with so many constraints.

Which best practices are offered by your institute to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

We have designed the curriculum of our college by including all the necessary courses and technologies so that basic to advanced concepts could be easily delivered to students and we can strengthen their concepts of Electronic Communication, Embedded System and VLSI etc. In addition to this, we keep organizing industrial training and internships for students as and when required and many of them are working on amazing projects which are sponsored by Nirma university under the title “IDEA Lab” and our faculties are also doing projects which are being offered to them by known agencies such as DST, GUJCOST, SAC-ISRO and SERB etc. Also for complex and advanced subjects, assignments are regularly assigned to students and they participate in various national and international competitions such as ROBOCON and SAE BAJA. Lastly, experts from different industries and R&D organizations along with our eminent Alumni are invited in college for delivering expert lectures, training programs and sessions on placements and regular counseling of students to help their mentor to segregate slow and fast learners and provide them knowledge as per their individual requirements.

How do you strategize and upgrade the curriculum of your college to make it befitting for the students?

We design and update the curriculum of our college by keeping in mind the quality of education we have to offer to students and goals we have to achieve at the end because we know each concept of a subject is just like one unit of a ladder. Also, we invite experts of IITs and reputed Industries to the Board of Studies meeting which we conduct twice a year to review and revise the syllabus as per the requirements, latest trends and developments of both industrial and educational world. And to inculcate best analytical, problem solving, synthesis and simulation skills in students, assignments are regularly assigned to them so that they can smoothly do the transition from academic institute to industry or research organization. And it gives me immense pleasure to announce that due to our sincere efforts, we have received the award of Centre of Excellence from Gujarat Government and A++ grade from NAAC and NBA.

Which extracurricular activities are organized by your college to enhance the skills of students?

Our college firmly believes in the fact that along with imparting best quality education in students, it's equally important for an educational institution to involve them in extracurricular activities and events as it's mandatory for all around growth and development of students. Hence we regularly organize national and international level competitions like ROBOCON, SAE BAJA etc. In addition to this, our students organize different kinds of programs for underprivileged people and also teach students of village schools through the support of student organizations which we have developed in our college. Last but not the least, we conduct sports events for a wide range of indoor and outdoor games along with cultural events like drama, singing events, rangoli and elocution competition etc.

What do you see as your college's greatest strengths?

We do have a very supportive and inspiring management to motivate our amazing team of committed, dedicated and highly qualified and well experienced faculty members and students to achieve their targets. Apart from this we have ultra modern laboratories and best journals and software tools are available in them for students to explore. Last but not the least, we have very transparent administrative procedures and a working-learning environment and I firmly believe that all these factors together make us strong and resilient.

What challenges are you facing in uplifting the education quality of your domain?

We are facing different types of hurdles at different levels and the very first roadblock in front of us is that few students lack knowledge of fundamental concepts of subjects and it becomes really difficult for us to make them competent in latest technologies and outside world requirements. Apart from this, students' main focus from the start of their respective courses remains on grabbing placement in good companies and due to this trend we struggle sometimes to motivate and guide them for research work.

Any valuable advice which you would like to give to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

I would like to advise my dear students to keep their fundamentals clear and have a strong command over them. In addition to this, they should take internships and work on real time projects so that they can assess their classroom learning and figure out solutions for real world issues. Attend seminars, develop new skills, stay focused towards your goals and always try to think out of the box as it will help you to be a lifelong learner.
