Dr. D. Sasikala is the HOD - Department of Commerce with Corporate Secretaryship at Hindusthan College of Arts and Science. She did her Ph.D. from Bharathiar University in 2019. Her areas of interest include Law and Accountancy. She has a total of 21 years of experience in the teaching field. She has been honored at the ICSI Teachers conference held on 27.09.2022 and have received the ‘Vocational Service Award’ for exemplary service in the field of Education from the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown. She has organized five International seminars and participated in various workshops and presented around 30 papers at national & international conferences.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

My philosophy of leadership is our teamwork and the relationship between the faculty members and the students.

What do you see as this College’s greatest strengths?

I consider the location of our college as the biggest strength. Further, it caters the needs of people from various geographic and economic clusters.

What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education in the current era?

Focus of the student in academic excellence is one of the major challenges for higher education in the present era.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth?

I would like to suggest students do mindful surfing of the internet and social media as it is the need of the hour.

How do you tend to establish a healthy environment in your College?

The college has a heterogeneous population, and various committees and compliance cells create a healthy and joyful campus. The safety and security of the students are monitored and enforced tirelessly. Clubs and cultural events keep the spirits high for the student community.

What can an inbound student gain from studying in your college?

The college provides an environment for holistic development and the perfect system supports the overall development of the student. The student has an opportunity to interact with fellow students who are from various parts of the State and Country.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practice of industry?

The college having autonomy has the best syllabus, which is upgraded and amended based on the suggestions of stakeholders and industrial experts.

What do you think should be the college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

The college may apply to be a University as it attracts the highest number of students in Coimbatore and has numerous programs introduced based on industrial needs.

What made you decide to become a teacher?

A teacher is a person who shapes the nation and my passion to be a teacher which still glows within keeps the profession going.

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing a course in your college?

A student may bloom into a responsible individual when he may choose his career option as an employee of an MNC/ bank/ financial institution or a proud entrepreneur or a consultant or a public servant opting for Public Service Commission exams. The options are countless.

What will you say are the best practices in the course you’re offering in your college? 

The Department of Commerce with its Corporate Secretaryship organizes on-campus coaching classes for the students preparing for ACS Course. The Department organizes various seminars, guest lectures, webinars, workshops, and hands-on training where industrial experts and company secretaries share their practical knowledge with the students. Case law presentations and discussions are done in the classroom. Internships and project work equip the students to fit the industrial requirement. Strong alumni association helps the students with interaction and placement offers.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

The Department of Commerce with Corporate Secretaryship is offering a B.Com (CS) program, which is offered only in selected institutions of Coimbatore. This course lays a stepping stone for the student to attain the goal of Company Secretary. High aspirations are sown in the mind of the students to take up the professional course ACS and be a qualified professional who is the most sought after in the industry.

How did you train faculty to deliver this program to the students in your college?

The department comprises an excellent team of faculty who possess Ph.D. and industrial experience. The right mix of senior and junior faculty creates a perfect teaching and learning environment. Faculty Development Programs and technical sessions are conducted for faculty members.

When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

Creating responsible citizens by helping them discover their strengths was my vision and it’s carried on tirelessly.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

The students take up internships in public limited companies, Advocate offices, Auditor’s offices, banks, Insurance Companies, and manufacturing firms. The final year students take up research projects thus gaining real-time exposure in various avenues like finance, marketing, HR, Company laws, etc.

How did you train your faculty to deliver this program to the students in the best possible way?

Regular faculty development programs and refresher courses help in improving the standards of faculty members.

Which factors make this program the best for the students to opt for?

Every company having a paid-up capital of more than 10 crores needs to appoint a full-time company secretary. With a growing number of companies, the demand for this profession is rising. A Company Secretary holds the prestigious position as one of the key managerial personnel of a company. The student may climb the ladder of top management at a very early age.

What are some of the valuable insights of this program that you are offering?

The Corporate Secretaryship Board of Studies is very keen on providing a syllabus that matches the industrial requirements. Every year feedback is collected from various stakeholders and industrial experts to upgrade the syllabus. The syllabus of B.Com (CS) is designed in line with the ACS syllabus facilitating the students to prepare for the professional course with ease. The program is based on Learning Outcome based Framework which maps the program and course outcomes from time to time. The students are further encouraged to participate in various seminars, conferences, and case law presentations preparing them as confident and knowledgeable individuals.
