Dr. Suresh Ray is the Vice Principal of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune. He is a PhD degree holder in Nursing and has completed 24 certificate courses from the field of Research, Education, End of Life care, Community Health, ICT & Management of Communicable Diseases through NPTEL, FHI, QASPIR & WHO.
Dr. Suresh Ray has been awarded the Asian Best Teacher Award, 2023 by the Edward Foundation of Academic & Research and was a gold medalist in M.Sc. Nursing (2008). Furthermore, Dr. Suresh Ray has received the Best Research Award in 2021 by Global Academic Research Excellence Award in 2021. Dr. Suresh Ray has 40 National & International Research Publications to date.
Being the Vice Principal of Bharati Vidyapeeth College Of Nursing, Pune what is your leadership philosophy? How would you describe your leadership style?
My leadership philosophy is striving to work in sync with the team to achieve the vision of the university which is “Social Transformation” through dynamic education. I prefer to implement a democratic style of leadership wherein all the staffs, faculties and even the students have an opportunity to put forth their ideas to achieve the task effectively, efficiently and in a more meaningful and logical way with a focus to achieve success in their fields.
Being the Vice Principal of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune how do you strategize about the key programs (B.Sc. Nursing, M.Sc. Nursing, P.B.B.Sc. Nursing)?
Being the Vice Principal of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing I keep things simple. I follow an outcome-based education system to get the best outcome from the course. As per the requirement of the course, the goals and objectives are framed, the capabilities of the stakeholders are assessed, benchmarks are set, and efforts are evaluated to deliver the required result.
When you first came to Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune what was your vision for the college and how far has it evolved?
I joined this College in the year 2000 as an undergraduate student and completed my Doctorate in nursing science here. The quality of nursing education and the practical exposure to various multispecialty hospitals, and rural and urban health settings has evolved during this period. It is evolved in many folds from traditional blackboard teaching to smart board teaching, from a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree to a Doctorate of Nursing Science degree. We also have increased in student population from hundreds to thousands.

What would you like people to know about your college they may not know?
Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing is the first Private Nursing college in the state of Maharashtra where we have students from all corners of India. Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune also has a multispecialty parent hospital that provides students with a state of art simulation lab to learn the skills of patient care so that it becomes easy for students to learn and apply knowledge.

Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune is the constituent unit of NAAC A+ accredited Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pune. Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune has a team of compassionate and dedicated faculty members who offer quality teaching. Besides this, we also have student-friendly atmosphere. We offer unparalleled placements and internships for our students.
What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune specifically?
The biggest challenge, I have come across at Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing is admissions in the PBBSC Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing courses. After completing their UG degree, most students prefer to get jobs either in the Government sector or abroad. The proliferation of similar colleges in the state and throughout India, as well as the increased fees for the courses, are additional factors for the lower admission to the courses like PBBSC Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing.
How does the curriculum of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune ensure the best practice of Nursing and how do you involve nursing students in community outreach programs?
We have the perfect blend of theory and clinical experience in all subjects that keeps Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune stand apart. The syllabus of all nursing courses is prescribed by INC, but Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing, Pune implements the syllabus by providing theory and clinical input both as per the requirement and on a need basis. We involved them in National Service Scheme and community outreach activities such as house-to-house health surveys, the identification of illnesses, the provision of basic medical care, health awareness activities, health camps, and participation in all National Health Programs as well.
Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students who would like to make a career in Nursing?
Nursing is a noble and global profession. It gives you an opportunity to earn, learn and sustain with peace and live with satisfaction by servicing mankind. You are young and you will evolve by some things should be constant. Have a strong work ethic, be a team player, be willing, and recognize your work will be more demanding than someone in an office job. It will, however, be so much more rewarding. As a nurse, you can make a real difference in someone's life. You can offer hope to people, sometimes during the worst time of their life.
What do you think your roles towards the College and the students are how do you plan to achieve your goals?
As far as the college is concerned, my role is to make this nursing college a centre of excellence for imparting nursing education In India. For students, my role is to nurture them to achieve their desired goals, to provide a platform to the students to get quality nursing education and to help them to become good human beings. This could be possible by being sustainable in education, more research, patents & grants, collaboration with National and International Institutes and aligning the curriculum with NEP guidelines.
Can you discuss any ongoing collaborations or partnerships with other educational institutions or healthcare facilities that benefit Bharati Vidyapeeth College Of Nursing, Pune?
Currently we are collaborating with Malardalen University, Sweden where we sent our faculty and students as a part of an exchange programme. We also had their students and faculty also come to our college to get exposure pertaining health care system and delivery in India. Students and faculty get benefits extensively by getting an opportunity to be familiar with transcultural nursing care. On a similar ground, we have initiated collaboration with USN, Norway. We also work with Tata Motors for students to get exposure in occupational health settings. We are also tied up with Honda India Association and ECH India for in-service training and education of Nurses and Multipurpose Health Workers.
