XLRI Jamshedpur devises the XAT Exam Pattern 2025 including the details on the number of questions, total marks, section and exam duration, and marking scheme. This year few changes in the exam pattern have been introduced. The exam authority has removed the Essay Writing Section. Similarly, the question numbers in GK have been reduced from 25 to 20. The time duration is back to 180 minutes.As per the new guidelines, The paper will have four sections with 95 MCQ
According to the exam authority, these changes are part of their ongoing effort to streamline their exam process enhance the evaluative components that align more closely with the core competencies required for
management education and leadership.
This Exam is a bit more difficult than other MBA Exams including CAT as it has additional Decision Making and GK sections. Due to it’s unique nature, it draws the interest of MBA aspirants, attracting over 1,35,000 candidates to participate in exam last year. You must familiarize yourself with the latest exam pattern and syllabus to get a good score in XAT 2025.
XLRI has divided the question paper into two parts. 1) Part 1 comprises of three sections, Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning (VA & LR), Decision Making (DM), and Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation (QA & DI). 2) Part 2 comprises of General Knowledge (GK). There is a sectional time limit, 170 minutes for Part 1 and concise 10 minutes for GK. Each question carries 1 mark. There is also a negative marking of 0.25 mark for each incorrect answer. You must also note that there is a penalty of 0.10 mark per question after 8 unattempted questions.

Ques. Does GK in XAT have negative marking?
Ans. Yes, XAT 2025 has a negative marking. Students will get 1 mark for every correct answer and -0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer. Also, for 8 consecutive unattempted questions, there will be deduction of 0.10 marks. However, there is no negative marking in XAT Essay writing section.
The scores from the General Knowledge (GK) is exclusively utilized by XLRI for its final selection process. The scores in GK section is not considered for percentile calculation in XAT exam.

Check the Key Changes in Last 5 Years
The exam Pattern has been updated and as per the new paper pattern, there are 3 parts in exam. Last year the exam pattern has undergone the below-mentioned important changes:
- Essay Writing section has been clubbed with the GK section in Part 3. 30 minutes have been given for this part instead of the earlier 25 minutes.
- All questions except the essay will be MCQs. A total of 100 MCQs will be asked in the paper- 75 in Part 1 and 25 in Part 3.
- Scores obtained in GK will not be included in the calculation of the final XAT score.
- The time duration has been increased from 190 minutes to 210 minutes.

Ques. What is the passing marks for XAT?
Ans. There is no passing marks specified by the conducting authority. Candidates appearing for the test need to qualify the cut off score to get admission to participating colleges. The expected cut off marks for the upcoming year is 90+
Ques. What is the time limit?
Ans. There is a sectional time limit. Part 1 is allotted 175 minutes, Part 2which is Keyboard Testing has been allotted 5 minutes, and Part 3 has 30 minutes to complete the Essay writing and General Knowledge questions.

Ans. The exam is conducted for a total of 100 marks. There will be 3 parts and each part will have questions between 22 to 30.

The Verbal and Logical Ability section comprises 26 objective-type questions.

- Allot considerable time to each section and try to follow this as it will help you to attempt maximum questions accurately. Solve maximum questions from each topic of each section to get hold of the entire syllabus.
- Devote extra time on reviewing questions which you are not confident about and practice them again and again.
- The reading comprehension part of the Verbal Ability section is an area where candidates can score well. So, practice as many RC passages as possible to score well.
- Focus on attempting sectional mock tests within the stipulated time to prepare thoroughly for the exam.
- Join a good coaching institute to clear your concepts.
- Candidates should take 2 mock tests at least once a week. It will help increase speed and accuracy for answering well in exam.

Important Instructions that You Should Follow
Candidates have to follow the instructions while taking the Exam. The instructions are important for the changed exam pattern and will help you to take the computer-based exam easily.
- For time management, a timer will be present on the right-hand side corner of the computer screen.
- No specified sequence has to be followed by the candidates while answering the questions.
- While responding to the questions, you will get options for checking the count of attempted and unattempted questions.
Candidates can change their response to another option if needed. Also, you can answer the questions in any sequence but you can see only one question at a time. There are a few more instructions that should be taken into consideration are:
- They can select the option of ‘Next Question’ or ‘Previous Question’ to move on to different questions.
- The ‘Erase’ button at the bottom of the screen can be used to change the response.
- To review a particular question, candidates can use the ‘tag’ option to bookmark it and later ‘detag’ the same, if required.
- To know the status of every question, there is a color palette on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Different colors against the question status they represent are as follows:
