Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Koramangala was established in 1786. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a premier institute devoted to research in astrophysics, astronomy and related physics. The headquarters of the Institute is in Koramangala, Bangalore, whereas the Hosakote campus, near Bangalore houses the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST). The Institute traces its origin to the Madras Observatory, and moved to Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, in 1899. Later renamed as the Kodaikanal Observatory, it has been functioning as a full-fledged solar and stellar observatory. The Institute has an observatories and network of laboratories situated in various places in India, including Kodaikanal, Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur and Kodaikanal. The institute is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
