Ans. Since you haven’t mentioned the branch you are interested in, I will assume you have no particular preference. Now, the primary factor to consider is if you value the brand of the college or the branch of your choice. Consider the following points  You can go for a less preferred branch at the top 5 IITs and then work hard for branch change. But this would be risky as branch change is very difficult. If your target is to get placed with excellent packages, then choose the CSE branch, it has the best job opportunities. You can also choose to work for noncore placements at the top 5 IITs. However, this will be very time-consuming as you have to manage both your noncore branch and CSE.  The best option would be to choose IIT Dhanbad CSE. It’s true that it won’t offer the opportunities and exposure that the top 5 IITs would but for me branch is more important than the brand name of the college. Ans.  I don’t need to even think twice before saying that IIT Dhanbad CSE is a far better option than Thapar CSE. The former is funded by the central government thereby offering an excellent academic background and opportunities. IIT Dhanbad has a beautiful campus and a vibrant campus life.  Here is the placement scenario of its CSE branch: Placement Percentage 93.13% Average Package INR 27.29 LPA Salary Range INR 5 LPA to INR 56 LPA Number of Recruiters 167 Thapar University, on the other hand, is a semi-government tier 2 that cannot be compared to IIT Dhanbad at all. Ans. As a B.Tech ECE student at IIT Dhanbad, I can give you some insight on this course. The ECE faculty consists of a handful of professors who are genuinely interested in this branch. You’ll get to study from them in the last 3-4 semesters. The rest won’t teach or guide you much.  Only the top performers get placed in core companies. Most of the recruitments are made by IT and software firms. For those jobs, you must learn good enough coding to be able to compete with fellow CSE students. Ans. IIT Dhanbad is better in CSE as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Dhanbad, established in 1926, is one of the oldest institutes in the country. On the contrary, IIT Bhubaneswar, established in 2008, comes under the list of new IITs. The overall placement package for CSE at IIT Bhubaneswar might be more alluring than IIT Dhanbad, according to 2019 placement statistics there was 100% placement from the CSE branch and the average placement package offered was around 11.4 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA. However, in IIT Dhanbad, the placement rate of the CSE students were 90.23% and the highest CTC offered was 39.5 LPA. Besides the number of students at IIT Dhanbad is more than IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Dhanbad has an excellent coding culture and organizes a vast number of technical and cultural fests. The number of opportunities in CSE offered by both institutions is almost the same. However, IIT Dhanbad definitely has a slight edge over IIT Bhubaneswar. Being one of the oldest institutes, IIT Dhanbad has better infrastructure as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar. Ans. The answer to this question depends on various factors but to keep it short let’s talk about the NIRF-2019 ranking (engineering category) and placement statistics (CSE Branch) of the institutes. IIT Dhanbad has been ranked at 15th among NIRF Ranking 2019. According to the placement statistics of 2019-20, the percentage of b-tech computer science students placed during campus placements was 90.23%. The percentage of B. Tech & M. Tech in Computer Science & Engineering (dual degree) placed during campus placements was 66.67% with the highest CTC of INR 23.80 LPA. The highest salary package offered in the computer science branch (B. Tech) was 39.50 LPA. The overall average package offered in all the b-tech branches was 15.50 LPA. Major recruiters include Accenture, Goldman Sach, Synopsys, Microsoft, Flipkart, Siemens, Amazon, Adobe, etc. Indian Institute Of Technology, Bhubaneswar has a NIRF Ranking-17. The placement statistics 2019-20 reveal the overall percentage of b-tech students placed during campus placement drives was around 89.55%. The percentage of computer science students placed was 100% this year but the average CTC offered to the students was less than that of IIT Dhanbad. The highest package offered to the computer science branch was INR 39 LPA. The major recruiters included Amazon, Adobe, Accenture, Akash Institute, BYJU, Atkins, Angel Broking, DELL, Honeywell, INTEL technology, etc. The average package offered was 11.90 LPA. Finally, other facilities such as labs, faculty, and other infrastructure at ISM Dhanbad is better than that of IIT Bhubaneswar as the former is one of the oldest elite institutes of the country. Ans. The engineering design department at IIT Madras is the newest department on campus. If you're interested in pursuing design-oriented courses closely related to mechanical engineering, this department is worth considering. The dual degree program in Engineering design has a good scope for campus placements, which are comparable to placements in the mechanical engineering department. Although there are not many seats available for undergraduates, it's surprising to note that the department closes at lower ranks in JEE than other departments such as Civil engineering and Chemical engineering. The engineering design department also offers better core job packages than the aforementioned departments. Ans. In my opinion, you have made the right decision by dropping the PITS Pilani EEE branch for IIT Madras Metallurgy. My cousin was forced to take IIT Madras Metallurgy by his mother. Initially, he was disappointed but his mother advised him to continue with the same enthusiasm he cleared JEE. Many students after getting admission relax and this opens opportunities for those who continue to slog even after admission. Your ultimate goal should be to change your branch for which you will have to work hard. This can be done by staying among the top 5% of the batch with around 9 CGPA. You can switch to Mechanical and even to Electrical sometimes with a good CGPA. All you have to do is Focus on your subjects Do well in the tutorials Perform well on quiz  Ace your practicals  Score high in the Final semester exam IIT Madras has a plethora of subjects to choose from in addition to a dual degree. You can change your branch provided your academic performance is at par with the requirements in the 3rd year. Some other highlights that might convince you further to choose IIT Madras are Creative clubs like C5 help in harnessing skills in your area of interest. These clubs have made amazing innovations and you can always learn so much by being a part of them. Another factor people consider is the environment provided by the Institute. Most North Indians consider the culture at IIT Madras way different and thus end up losing focus and motivation. If you are affected by such elements, choose the Institute you think will have a culture and people similar to your tastes. Many North Indians are settling well in IIT Madras and ending up in the top 5% of the batch. So what matters is that the Institute you are choosing should provide the kind of environment that motivates you to learn and excel. You will face tremendous competition and thus you will have to stay focussed and motivated to do well in that kind of environment.
