BU MSW FAQs
Ques. Is BSW mandatory to apply for MSW at Bharathiar University, or can graduates from other disciplines apply?
Ans. Bharathiar University accepts applications from graduates of any discipline for the MSW programme, not just BSW holders. However, candidates with a BSW background may have an advantage in the merit list due to their prior exposure to social work concepts. Graduates from disciplines such as Sociology, Psychology, Economics, and other social sciences are commonly admitted. The minimum eligibility is a UG degree with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) from a recognized university.
Ques. What is the fieldwork structure in the MSW programme at Bharathiar University?
Ans. The MSW programme at Bharathiar University has a strong fieldwork component integrated across all four semesters as concurrent fieldwork training. In addition, students undertake a Summer Internship between the first and second year, and a Block Placement (intensive field placement) during the programme. As per UGC norms, 14 hours per week are allocated to fieldwork practicum in each semester. Students are placed in NGOs, hospitals, corporate HR departments, government agencies, and community organizations in and around Coimbatore.
Ques. What are the specializations available in the MSW programme at Bharathiar University?
Ans. The Department of Social Work at Bharathiar University focuses on three main thrust areas: Human Resource Management (HRM), Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, and Community Development. Students typically specialize in one of these areas during the programme, with coursework and fieldwork placements aligned to their chosen specialization. The HRM specialization is particularly popular among students seeking corporate HR careers, while Medical and Psychiatric Social Work is sought after by those interested in hospital and mental health settings.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after MSW from Bharathiar University?
Ans. MSW graduates from Bharathiar University find employment across a wide range of sectors. Those specializing in HRM are recruited by corporates as HR executives, welfare officers, and training coordinators. Medical and Psychiatric Social Work graduates work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and mental health organizations. Community Development specialists find roles in NGOs, government welfare departments, and international development organizations. The department has a track record of students clearing UPSC and TNPSC examinations, and several alumni have received UGC and ICSSR research fellowships.
Ques. Does Bharathiar University offer any international exposure for MSW students?
Ans. Yes, the Department of Social Work has an active MOU with Munster University, Germany, which enables select students to participate in international field work and global learning programmes. Till date, four students have been selected and benefited from this international programme. This provides a unique opportunity for MSW students to gain cross-cultural social work experience and exposure to international social welfare systems, which is a significant differentiator compared to most other MSW programmes in Tamil Nadu.
Ques. Is there a separate entrance exam for MSW admission, and how competitive is the selection process?
Ans. There is no separate entrance examination for MSW admission at Bharathiar University. Selection is purely merit-based, using the marks obtained in the qualifying UG degree (up to the V semester or II year). Given that Bharathiar University is a NAAC A++ accredited institution and one of the most reputed universities in Tamil Nadu, the MSW programme is competitive. Candidates with higher UG percentages, especially those with BSW or social science backgrounds, tend to have a better chance of securing admission. The merit list is published on the university website after the application deadline.
