IIT Dhanbad offers the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 21 specialisations namely Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, etc. IIT Dhanbad PhD admissions are based on GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT Scores.   • Must have passed with a first-class division or minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 in Master’s degree in the relevant subjects such as Arts, Commerce, Humanities, Engineering, Technology, Science, Commerce, Management and Social Sciences. OR
  • Must have passed with a minimum of 70% aggregate marks or CGPA of 7.0 in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
PhD in Management
  • Must have passed with a first-class division or minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 in Master’s degree in Management or allied areas or Engineering or Technology, Science, Arts, Commerce. OR
  • Must have passed with a minimum of 70% aggregate marks or CGPA of 7.0 in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. OR
  • Those who have qualified for CA/ICAI/ICMA/CS with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6.0 in Bachelor’s Degree.

Selection: The selection criteria for Admissions to the Ph.D. programs of the university are based on the GATE/NET/CAT/GMAT scores and further Interview or Written Ability Test/ screening test. Candidates who get shortlisted based on merit rank will be called for the interview process. The institute will display the list of shortlisted candidates on its official website in their respective departments. The selection committee of the respective department will be interviewing the shortlisted candidates, and candidates will obtain marks based on the performance of the candidate during the interview only. The merit list will be prepared based on the candidate’s performance in the interview and qualifying degree scores.

IIT Dhanbad PhD Scholarship

IIT Dhanbad also provides financial assistantships to full-time Ph.D. students who have qualified for GATE or any other eligible national-level examination in the form of teaching or research assistantships.

  • The Assistantships are awarded every year for a period of up to five years.
  • The stipend for the assistantship is paid at the approved rates as specified by the MHRD
  • Additionally, Full-time Ph.D. students get financially supported by research projects and may avail of institute fellowship after completion of the project.
  • The eligibility for the same is that the student must have qualified for GATE or any other eligible national-level examination.
  • The maximum duration of fellowship in all such cases will be up to five years,
  • Students shall devote up to eight hours per week to the teaching/laboratory assistantship assigned to him/her.
  • The assistantship can be renewed for more years based on the performance of the candidates

IIT Dhanbad PhD Assistantship

IIT Dhanbad usually provides financial assistance in the form of teaching or research assistantships to full-time PhD students who have qualified GATE/ NET. This assistantship can also be offered to IIT graduates having a CGPA greater than 8.0 in their qualifying degree. The PhD students will be provided this assistantship for a period of five years based on their performance. To avail of this benefit, candidates have to devote their 8 hours per week towards teaching/laboratory assistantship. The selected candidates will be provided with the following assistantships:

Ques. What are the eligibility criteria for having a Bachelor’s Degree from IIT?

Ans. Candidates shall have passed with a minimum of 70% aggregate marks in their degree-qualifying examination. Also, they must have appeared for GATE or NET. However, if the candidate has acquired more than 80% aggregate marks, there will be no requirement for such candidates to appear for these entrance exams.

Ques. Can any student in the final year of my Master’s Degree apply for a Ph.D. program at IIT Dhanbad?

Ans. Yes. Candidates in the final year of the qualifying degree may be considered for provisional admission under an undertaking that they will present their results to the Institute on or before the date of admission.
