National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar in J&K offers a postgraduate program leading to the award of a Ph.D. degree under various specializations in the departments of Engineering and Science. The Ph.D. degree is conferred in recognition of outstanding academic achievements and research. Chemical Engineering ME /M. Tech in the relevant field of Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 or not less than 60% for General/OBC/EWS Category and SC/ST minimum CGPA of 6.0 Or not less than 55% marks at Master’s level or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Institute.  OR BE / B. Tech with a valid GATE score above the prescribed cut-off level or UGC / CSIR NET in the relevant specialization. The candidates shall have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 or not less than 75% for the General /OBC/EWS Category and for SC/ST minimum CGPA of 7.5 or not less than 70% at BE/B Tech level OR M. Sc with a minimum of 60 % marks or 6.5 CGPA in the Master’s Degree and with a valid GATE Score or UGC / CSIR NET in relevant specialization tenable for the year of registration.
Civil Engineering ME/ M. Tech in the relevant field of Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 or not less than 60% for General/OBC/EWS Category and for SC/ST minimum CGPA of 6.0 Or not less than 55% marks at Master’s level or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Institute.  OR BE/B. Tech (4 years) with a valid GATE score above the prescribed cut-off level / NET in the relevant specialization. In addition to the above, following qualifications are also eligible for Engineering Geology and Geo-Science Specializations only: Master’s degree in Applied Geology/ Geology/ Earth Sciences or an allied area satisfying each of the following criteria: A minimum of 65% marks or 6.5 CGPA in the Master’s degree, and First division in Bachelor’s degree, AND Valid GATE score or UGC / CSIR NET in relevant specialization tenable for the year of registration.
Computer Science & Engineering BE/ B. Tech (4-year) in Computer Science & Engineering / Information Technology / Electronics & Communication Engineering /or other relevant branch AND ME /M. NIT Srinagar Ph.D. Selection Criteria

NIT Srinagar selection to the Ph.D. programs is made based on scores in GATE or JRF/ NET exams.  A written test and personal interview are also conducted by the institute to give admission to the Ph.D. program. Depending on the department or faculty, different selection criteria may apply. Before releasing an advertisement, any department wishing to alter the selection criteria must get approval from the relevant DPGCs and notify the DAA of the change. Only the addition or removal of degrees that meet the requirements will be updated. For the same, no additional approval will be required. Changes to the minimum percentage or CGPA required for qualifying degrees or other qualifying requirements cannot be approved by the DPGC. The Senate alone has the authority to amend or change this. With complete justification, DPGC may notify SPGC of modifications to the minimum percentage, CGPA, or other qualifying requirements. SPGC can advise the Senate on the same. Self–attested Photocopies of Certificates to be attached at the time of applying for admission to the Ph.D. program.

NIT Srinagar Ph.D Admission Criteria

NIT Srinagar will accept applications for admission to the PhD Program once a year. Every year, in April and May, an advertisement calling for candidates to register for the Autumn Session is released through various media platforms. An advertisement notice for the registration of candidates for the spring session may also be released in January if there are enough open seats. The candidates should fulfill the eligibility criteria and also sit for the written test followed by an interview. The candidates must also give a presentation on the subject they want to pursue a Ph.D. in. The institute releases the final cutoff based on the written test and the performance in the presentation.

Candidates have to apply against the proper advertisement issued by the Institute. The steps to apply are mentioned below:

  • Visit the official website of the institute.
  • Go to the ‘registration link’ on the website page.
  • You need to check GATE eligibility by checking the GATE cutoff. You can enter your GATE score, and it will show you if you are eligible or not. In case the GATE score applies to you.
  • Enter the exam roll number and fill in the personal details
  • Pay the fee through online modes. The application fees are INR 1500 and INR 1000(SC/ST)

  • Candidates whose final year results are yet to be declared are also eligible to apply, however, they have to submit their certificate/marks card at the time of enrolment if selected. They should also upload the complete transcript of marks/grades up to the last semester/year.

Sponsored Full-time / Part-Time candidates have to produce the following documents at the time of enrollment:

  • No Objection Certificate & Sponsorship Certificate from the employer.
  • Proof of 02 years of regular service.

NIT Srinagar Ph.D Course Details

The PhD programs at NIT, Srinagar are offered in 12 specializations. The maximum time for coursework completion is (three semesters) one and a half years of registration. The maximum time for coursework completion is 24 months for Integrated Ph.D. candidates. The minimum course credit requirement for all categories except Integrated Ph.D. is 10, which includes a course compulsory on Research Methodology.  For Integrated Ph.D. the minimum course requirement is 24. Candidates are required to complete 10 credit courses, among which a course in Research Methodology is a compulsory course. Candidates must complete all the assigned course work, in the seven-grade system (A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, FAIL), with a grade not lower than C in each of the courses.
