MS Particle and Nuclear Physics - University of Edinburgh Experience

NS
5.2 /10

It is going good. Though due to so much pressure, mental health of alot of students is affected and most people take special circumstances and extensions to meet deadlines or improve their performance. It's a challenge to pass courses atleast in my degree program. Most of the people are struggling to just pass. And alot of have applied for special circumstances. It's definitely extremely hard.

Course Curriculum :

It is a bit difficult to carry out as a lot is to be done in just a year. But there is a good support system in place and one can apply for extensions and special circumstances. My course syllabus is extremely good; it's the latest, and course choices are really broad. Besides, the thesis that one does is mostly under a professor already working at CERN so that's a wonderful research experience.

Exams :

IELTS - my score was 7.5. Other requirements are CV, LORs, Personal Statement. Generally scores vary with course but I think mostly it should be higher than 6.5 or 6. One must verify this, as I am not sure.. I Submitted 3 LORs, CV, and SOP. Make sure that teachers writing LOR for you personally know you and can write real life anecdotes to highlight your skills. Also, for SOP make sure to highlight the skills and experiences you haven't mentioned in CV because they already know your CV. Mention some difficult situations you had to face during internships or degrees and how you overcame them. Mention your interest and passion in the subject. Make a good story out of it. But do keep it academic. Also, you can mention extraordinary circumstances you may have to go through and how you overcame them. Interview round: Not for my course. But if applying for an integrated master's and PhD you may be required to give interviews

Placement :

Well, it isn't easy to find a job or PhD position. I am currently struggling to find research opportunities. I would say there is not much support from the University in that department.

Internship :

No I couldn't. There was too much pressure and the program is extremely hectic.

Fees :

Tuition Fee: 35,300 pounds. Yes, it is on the higher end.

Scholarship :

No, I haven't, though there is a need-based scholarship - The Higgs Scholarship

Faculty :

My faculty is full of famous physicists like Neil Turok, John Peacock, and Prof. Victoria. These people have worked on the Higgs Boson discovery experiment and have given theories about the Universe, like the CPT invariant universe. The faculty is fabulous.

Campus Life :

There are a ton of options to do extracurriculars, though I think there is not much time as in my course, I had classes daily from 9-6 or 9-5 mostly. It was a delight for us if some days classes were over by 2 3 PM. The infrastructure, in general, is extraordinary; it's so beautiful. The libraries, since there are so many, are stacked with books. Infinite learning resources.

Hostel :

I live in the University's student accommodation, and it is relatively good. Not the best but it's good and in the city center but the accommodations, in general, are throughout the city.
