Remarks :
My overall experience in this college has been quite moderate till date. One of the biggest problems one will face is that the library, computer centre and the student activity centre are not operational 24/7 till date, Another problem is never ending construction work is quite nagging and the continuous motion of the heavy vehicles due to that construction throughout the campus makes the campus appear more or less like an under-construction site than a college. Good college, Equipped with moderate infrastructure, which is in a state of progress. Placements are good. Opportunities are available in different fields but you will have to grasp them without procrastination.
Entrance Preview :
I gave JEE Mains and JEE Advanced 20014 and secured an AIR of 5300 in JEE Advanced. Considering my rank my best option was B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad formerly known as ISM Dhanbad. Placement statistics of IIT Dhanbad were decent and it was an old and reputed institute with a huge alumni network so I opted for it. Mechanical Engineering was my field of interest so this option pushed me further to opt for this course.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course curriculum is in line with most of the engineering colleges in India. In an academic year, we have 3 semesters monsoon semester(from July-November) winter semester (From December-April) and summer semester (from May-July). The monsoon and winter semesters are regular semesters and those who fail to pass their examinations during the regular semester register for the summer semester where they again get an opportunity to complete their credits for others summer semester is summer vacation. After the 6th-semester students need to do a compulsory summer internship(at least 4 weeks) on which they are graded later in the seventh semester. After the 4th-semester, students also get an opportunity to opt for a minor degree of any other department depending on that candidate's eligibility they also get an opportunity to opt for the honours degree in their main course. Most of the subjects taught to us are in line with those taught in IIT Kharagpur. Our Institute follows a relative grading system. The electives are there during the final year as prescribed in our course curriculum only a few are really available to the students due to lack of respective faculty. Research facilities are quite moderate and the basic focus of our curriculum is on theoretical knowledge with very less focus on practical implications as well as the research aspect. Research opportunities are there though they are difficult to access.
Internships Opportunities :
When it comes to internship only a few companies visit our campus for Mechanical Engineering students such as TATA Steel (20K stipend per month), TATA Motors, VE commercials(10K per month) etc. Most of the students apply off campus for their summer training as well as summer internships but the condition of full time hiring from Mechanical Engineering is quite good. The condition of computer science department is quite good with 60-65 students bagging on-campus internship (Average stipend 40K per month)out of a batch strength of 150 students. Our training and placement cell is working to improve this figure.
Placement Experience :
Nearly 90 percent of our batch of mechanical engineering is placed with an average salary of 7 Lacks per anum (CTC) .93 students were placed from B-tech mechanical Engineering (on campus) from 116 students excluding year back students and the rest of the students have managed to bag an off campus job. The highest compensation for mechanical Engineering was offered by BPCL 17.3 Lackhs (CTC). Public sector companies visit our college and are the highest payers for core branches with the average being 16 lakh per anum. Those who visited our college this year were ONGC (Recruited 20 students from petroleum department), IOCL(Recruited 5 from mechanical 2 from chemical), BPCL(Recruited 5 from mechanical 2 from electrical), Coal India(Recruited 4 from mechanical and 4 from mining machinery), HPCL(mostly recruited from civil 4-5 and 1 from mechanical). When it comes to public sector companies reservation policy made by the government of India does apply and except for ONGC which recruited 10 general and 10 reserved candidates other public sector companies recruited mostly the reserved candidates to fill there vacancies. The overall placement percentage for Computer science department is the best (130 out o 150 students placed) the highest offer was made by UBER 34 lakhs (CTC) per anum . Goldmansachs offered 32 lacks. Approximately 50 students bagged pre-placement offers from the computer science department. Civil and chemical departmens are relatively newb departments and are striving to improve their placements and have improved a lot. Though not even a single core company of electrical or electronics engineering visited our campus the placement of electrical department and electronics department has improved. The number of students from electrical department who got placed this year was approximately 60 previous years the number was 45.The biggest recruiters this year was samsung (nearly 35 for bangalore and nearly 20 for noida centre). Lnt, Vedanta, Tata motors and many other companies in the technical industry also paid homage to our institute for Mechanical Engineering and other core branches. Offers from trading companies such as Future First and analytics companies such as Tredence were also well recieved . Coaching industry recruited the biggest chunk Career Point being the biggest recruiter from the coaching industry. A lot of coaching institutions did visit aur college. For a more detailed and factual analysis visit our website or check the facebook page of mailer damon our campus newsletter.
College Events :
We have many festival events in our college. Our techno-management fest is known as concetto and students from the first year participate in this event though we have some participation from other institutes as well overall this event is not very big and can be rated 2.5 on a scale of 5. Our cultural fest known as Srijan is quite good and has witnessed many celebrity performances as well as participation from other institutes. Our annual alumini meet is known as Basant and is conducted at the onset of spring. Our inter-branch cultural contest is known as Pratibhimb. We have an inter-hostel sports meet too.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
Our fee structure is same as that of any other IIT. For the batch which took admission in the year 2013 to 2015 it is approximately 50 thousand per semester or 1 Lakh per anum. The batch which took admission on or after 2016 are ought to pay double that amount that is 1 Lakh per semester or 2 Lakh per anum. This is excluding the mess fee which is 30 thousand per year. It is quite expensive but a number of scholarships are available to reduce this burden. Easy loans at low interest rates are also available to pay the fee.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Though I did not avail any scholorship a lot of different scholorships are available for religious minorities and reserved categories. General category students can avail the merit-cum scholorship provided by the government of India to those whose family income is less than 6 L per anum. In this almost all of your fees is reimbursed. SBI provides easy loans at low interest rates to needy students. Other scholorships for branch toppers such as OP Jindal scholorship is also available for meritorious students.
Campus Life :
There is a lot of diversity in the institute. Students from various backgrounds, of various ethinicity ( Mostly from UP, Bihar, Bengal, Rajasthan and AP) reside in the campus with harmony and peace. Students here come from different economic as well as religious background and there is no discrimination as such on the basis of religion and economic condition. Our institute is politically neutral and all decisions are democratically taken without any kind of bias or stereotyping. Our institute has a healthy environment and any achievement by any of our student is celebrated. Student parties are quite common and improves interaction between batchmates, seniors and juniors. There are ample clubs ranging from dramatics to astronomy . Our dance club, literary club and chess club are among the best of the clubs. The student activity centre is fully equipped with all sorts of recreation facilities. You can also be a part of the reading club, art club and the photography club which regularly conduct workshops to hone our skills. Gender ratio is quite bleak, with the gender ratio bein 1:10 for the entire institute and 1:58 for our mechanical engineering 2018 batch.
Hostel Facilities :
IIT Dhanbad is a fully resedential college for both student as well as the faculty. The hostel rooms are small and singlal rooms are not available till date though a lot of new hostels are under construction and soon hopefully single rooms would be available. Right now only double rooms are available but we can manage in them (during your final year you will get a better room) the first year hostel (Jasper) is the worst as it appears as a prison second year onwards the rooms are decent. The quality of mess food is no good but it depends on your hostels mess committee comprising of students to pressurize the mess manager to make the food better.
Alumni/Alumna :
Our alumini network is quite strong and diverse with our alumini holding top positions in a variety of institutions. Though there strong hold is still the earth science arena they have managed to reach at the top of a variety of institutions. If you want to know in detail about there achievements you can check our website as well as wikipedia.Yes they are very helpful and friendly too, you just need a proper way to reach them like the social networking sites linkedin and facebook. They will reply and try their best to help you.
Exam Structure :
The exam structure is quite strenuous. During a semester we have continuous evaluation through rigorous assignments. In addition to that we have mid-semester examinations which are conducted continously for 5 to 6 days depending on the number of subjects you have enrolled for. Then we have end semester exams for 10 to 12 days with a gap of 1 day between each exam. Before the end-semester exams we have our practical exams as well as sessional exams which are mandatory to pass in the first attempt.Throughout the semester we have continuous labs. Except for the exam days rest of our semester is quite chilled out.
Admission :
To get admission into IIT Dhanbad each and every candidate has to go through a rigorous two-tier selection procedure. The first level is known as JEE Mains which is an online exam in which nearly 13-14 Lakh students appear (Usually in the first Sunday of April each year ). This exam tests you on your ability to solve problems of Physics, Maths, and Chemistry. The level of difficulty is not very high and NCERT books are enough to qualify this exam, though rigorous problem-solving practice is required to get a good score in this exam. Being a competitive exam speed plays a vital role in cracking this exam hence practice is very important. The second level JEE Advanced formerly known as IIT-JEE is quite tougher when it comes to the level of difficulty of the questions asked. It consists of two 3 hour exams scheduled on the end of May. The first exam is from 9:00-12:00 and the second one from 14:00-17:00 on the same day. Both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced have negative marks for wrong answers. For admissions into an IIT like IIT Dhanbad JEE Mains is just a qualifying exam and final admission is granted on the basis of a candidates AIR in JEE Advanced which is conducted by the IIT council.
Faculty :
Comparing with other Indian Colleges (excluding the top IITs) our faculty is quite good but still, I would warn you to be prepared for a lot of self-study. Some of our faculty have extraordinary prowess in their respective subjects and are kind and helpful by nature but still due to the dearth of quality faculty and the overburdening of the limited good faculty the quality of education imparted to us becomes a bit less effective. All the assistant and associate professors have done their PhDs from reputed Indian as well as foreign institutes. Some of our professors have a lot of experience and have published ample research papers as well as mentored many research scholars towards their PhDs.
