Entrance Preview :
I took the exam called IIT JEE, I scored AIR 2416 and I did not intentionally go for this college rather I got this college after my counselling based the rank i secured. Also, I did not know anything about any particular degree at that point of time so i looked into the last year's (2008) rank book and saw what courses you can get in your rank and I decided to put all the courses based on their demand and thus I got Mechanical Engineering in IIT Kgp. There was no interview rather there were two 3 hours exams which I cleared and then after that there was no other exam.
Course Curriculum Overview :
It's totally upto student if he/she wants to do something in research. The students get ample amount of opportunities where he/she can kick-start his/her research career. Many professors provide such opportunities to the students at the undergraduate level.
Internships Opportunities :
There are not many internship opportunities in our college as our professors have university's students to fill that gap and in very few cases, students get paid for the work they do in their internship.
Placement Experience :
The placements and job opportunities of our college are pretty good as almost all the students get placed from the campus placements. The training and placement cell of our college ensure that all the companies right from major ones (Facebook, Google etc) to minor ones (Accenture, TCS etc) visit the campus for placements. The company's offerings range from 100k $ (per annum; Abroad roles) to 3 lacs per annum depending on the talent of the students. Like Google and Facebook offer 100k-120k $ per annum to students (Coding Profile Students) and Accenture, TCS offer as low as 3 lacs per annum.
College Events :
There are three General Championships that we have in our college where different hall of residences compete with each other to win. All the three Championships i.e. SocialnCultural, Sports and Technology have around 50 events in total and every championship has one winner hall based on the points they get from different events they participate. These championships are managed by students who are given the responsibilities of Gymkhana (A Community). Other than this We have these annual fests i.e. Spring Fest (Social and Cultural Fest), Kshitiz (Tech Fest) and Shaurya (Sports Fest) where teams from different colleges come and take part in various events. Other than this on Diwali, Students from every hall make a beautiful structure from nothing but diyas and also a rangoli (very beautiful and complicated) is made in every hall.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is not that expensive. An average of 8-9 lacs is spent in all the four years which include everything; tuition fee, accommodation, food etc. All in all the fee structure seem feasible. Also, There are various education loans that easily available for all the students who wish to go for that. The students don't find any difficulty finding that.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
A scholarship called Merit cum Means is rolled out for students who are not financially strong (Annual family income is less than 4 lacs) and secure a decent CGPA (Grades). There are two-three banks in our college who provide students loans to the needy every year.
Campus Life :
Gender ratio is pretty bad in our college, as bad as 1 girl on 11 boys which is why the diversity is very less. There are various societies i.e. robotics, Dramatics (Both Eastern and Western) Music (Both Eastern and Western). These are the student communities who perform on various occasions such as convocation day, Hall day, fests etc. We have already talked about the competition that happen in General Championships. Long story short there are way too many extracurricular activities that occur in our college.
Hostel Facilities :
For the first two years, the students live on a sharing basis but after that, they are given a single room. Most of the hostels are very old and thus the facilities. There is no PG facility outside our college as Kharagpur is a very remote area and no student choose to live outside the campus. The mess food is really pathetic and thus the students spend most of their time in other cafeterias and restaurants. I would rate accommodation a 2/5 and food 0.5/5.
Alumni/Alumna :
Our alumni network is very old and thus very strong. Many recognized alumnus have contributed to the college over the years financially or otherwise. They help create more career opportunities (internships/jobs) for the students who graduate out of the college. My interaction with my seniors is pretty nice. They were more of friends than the seniors and yeah they helped me on various occasions in terms of guidance
Exam Structure :
There are way too many exams, tests and labs in our college per semester. Students generally take 4 tests, 1 mid-sem exam, 1 end-sem exams and 2 lab test in one subject and there are around 6 subjects on an average in one semester that means around 50 exams per semester. Other than that there are two projects submissions in the last year and one internship course at the end of 3rd year. Long thing short, sometime we used get loaded and sometime it used to be pretty chilled out.
Admission :
There was an entrance form (JEE Form) which i bought from one of the stationary shop and filled and speed posted to IIT official address and then i got my admit card at my home address. As everybody knows that this exam has one date for all the applicants, I went to examination center (given in my admit card) on time and took the first exam of 3 hour and then there was a break of about 1 hour and then I took the second 3 hour exam and in both the exams, I submitted my OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheets and then after few days I got my result
Faculty :
The faculty is well qualified (Experienced PhDs) and knows their subject inside out. If I were to rate the faculty of my college, I would have given 5/5 as the professors of my college are the internationally known names in their fields. Their work and research has shown that they have the in-depth knowledge of the work they do
