Remarks :
Jadavpur University has become my second home in these four years. There is different level of vibrant in the campus that you will find nowhere else in the world.
Entrance Preview :
I entered Jadavpur University through West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination 2014. There were three rounds of counselling. I got admission in the first round itself into Mechanical Engineering.
Course Curriculum Overview :
Mechanical Engineering Curriculum in J.U. has been an wonderful experience for me. I have gained hands on knowledge in the Blue Earth Workshop of our university (2nd largest machine-workshop in Asia). Also, the laboratories, especially the CAD/CAM Lab, the Applied Mechanics Lab, Heat-Power Lab, Hydaulic Lab etc. and the other workshops are some of the finest laboratories I have come across and worked in my university. The entire four-year curriculum stresses on all the core disciplines of mechanical engineering along with the sessional/practical subjects (labs and workshops). Also, we have to take up two research projects in the final year, one in each semester, under a mentor.
Internships Opportunities :
Our faculty members help students get internships through recommendation. Some arrange on their own. Also, some of the companies visiting our campus for placements provide internships to third year students, on successful completion of which they get a PPO (pre-placement offer).
Placement Experience :
In total 119 companies visited our campus last year and 97.86% students got placed with some receiving even double offers. In our mechanical engineering department, 67 were placed in core sector, 18 in Consultancy and analytics sector and 10 in IT sector out of 110 students. This session too has started showing a better placement scenario. Already 46 companies have visited our campus, each employing about 6 candidates on an average (for engineering faculty).
College Events :
Sanskriti is the annual cultural fest, one of the largest in Eastern India. Each of the three faculties has its own Sanskriti but they are open to all. The annual tech-fest, Srijan is one of the most famous college-events of India. Other than that, each departmennt organises its own fest, for example Trajectory (for Mechanical Engineering department, Convolution for Electrical Engineering Department).
Fee Structure And Facilities :
We have to pay the lowest fees for engineering among all institutes of India. The consolidated fees for each year of study is just about Rs.2250/- and examination fees of Rs.64 per semester. A one-time library card and workshop card charge of Rs.5/- + Rs.5/- were charged from us. The admission fees (one-time at entry) was just Rs.560. Along with there are multiple merit-cum-means scholarships available to students coming from financially weak backgrounds.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The annual fees are so low that one does not require any loan for carrying on the studies. For financially weak students, tuition fee waivers, merit-cum-means scholarships are provided by the University as well as various companies and our Alumni-association.
Campus Life :
I have got the best platform in JU to nurture and show my hidden talents in poetry, music, debating and quizzing. Also, we regularly play football, cricket and basketball, though these are not compulsory.
Hostel Facilities :
I do not reside in the hostel but often visit the rooms of my classmates in the JU Main Hostel. The rooms are a bit old but well maintained. I stay in a rented single room flat within half a kilometer from the campus premises. It costs me Rs.5000 per month inclusive of electricity and water bills and a garage. Paying Guest facilities are also available nearby.
Alumni/Alumna :
The JU Alumni Association is one of the strongest alumni-networks in the world, spread across 86 countries. The Annual Reunion, TEDx talks, Departmental Seminars and Placement Drives are some of the events where we best interact with our alumni. That's why wherever, we o, we are branded as JODUBONGSHO (meaning, the Jadavpur University family).
Exam Structure :
The examination schedules are very flexible. There are two mid-term examinations/class-tests per semester and an end-semester examination. The dates are tentatively fixed by the Faculty Council but on the request of students bodies, they are often re-adjusted for the convenience of students. We never feel tired of exams as such.
Faculty :
JU has some of the most renowned and competent faculty of India. All faculty members try to help out students to the maximum extent possible in understanding the curricular subjects as well as in coordinating research activities, seminars etc.
