Remarks :

My 4 years at NIFT was utterly an experience! I cant describe it probably in a word but I can say that it has built me as a person, it has thought me how to deal with different people from a worker or an artisan to at CEO or MD of an organisation, it has thought me to be confident at the same time humble. How to work under immense pressure and time constrains. All in all NIFT has acquiped me to take on this world and make my mark with the skills and practices that I learnt in these 4 years.

Entrance Preview :

I had to take the NIFT entrance exam, for which one has to register on the official website. Registration opens in the month of Jan - Feb. I opted for NIFT because I have always wanted to be a Fashion designer from the age of 3, and it has been my dream and passion ever since. NIFT has been the always the best place to study fashion in India and hence there was no second thought as to why I choose this college.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course that I took the curriculum was holistic with specialization in garments, footwear and accessories and not just one. One learns pattern making, construction and design development in all these fashion products. The curriculum also has insights on merchandising, marketing, IPR, CAD and Digital graphics as subject during the curse of the 4 year programme.

Internships Opportunities :

Yes it does. We have to do a compulsory internship in the summer of our 3rd year. One can apply themselves or take the help of faculty members to get placed. the stipend depends form company to company and the stipend raises from Rs. 5000 - 12000.

Placement Experience :

The placements happen every year is most NIFT centers and it is a centralised system and any student can sit in 2 centers other than his/her home center. Other than campus placements one get placed though PPO (pre placement offer) in the company one does their internship in.

College Events :

There are a lot of cultural events hosted it campus like fresh face, Student Fest, Spectrum a campus cultural event. A centralised Cultural event among all NIFT centers and recently we had interdepartmental cultural. The college also organises design various competitions like design sutra, designer of the year etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

the fees is payable every semester, i.e twice a year. The fees in the fist semester of the year is a little more than that of the second time as certain fees like library fees, lab fees and facilities fees is payable once a year. There is a 10% - 20% increment in fees every year. The fees ranges fron Rs.60,000 - 80,000 every semester.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There a few of scholarships which one can avail to get fee rebate. The Student Loan option is offered by Union Bank and details are given out at the time of counselling. The loan amount is up to Rs. 8,00,000 - 10,00,000.

Campus Life :

Since NIFT is a fashion college the stereo type applies there aren't as many boys as there are girls. In short there I would say there would be 4 - 8 boys maximum in a class, making it almost 20% boys to 80% girls. The ethnicity of the college is quite diverse with people all over India in campus. There are very few localites and the most common language around campus is Hindi making most students from far off places feel at home. The student body and Cultural group come together and celebrate various festivals like Onam, Pongal (Sankranti and Lodhi), Navratri, Christmas and New Year.

Hostel Facilities :

I was a day scholar. Honestly the food and hostel facilities at NIFT Chennai is below average like how most messes at colleges in India are. The in campus hostel is for boys and within 2km radius the girls hostel is located. the hostel rooms are 2- 3 sharing occupancy ant there are no single room occupancies available. Since the in campus hostel facility rooms are only few they get filled up easily. There are a lot of residential apartment and PG's nearby where most senior students prefer taking.

Alumni/Alumna :

The alumni Network is quite connected though portals and groups. The interaction with senior students, I would say is how one maintains it. If someone is very social and keeps in touch with his/her senior will obviously have a good relationship with them. What one need to remember while studying at NIFT weather you like your seniors or not you are going to acquaint some of them during some phase of your career as the fashion industry is filled with NIFTians and are very well connected.

Exam Structure :

The exam structure is semester wise, where in each semester this is a mid term exam and an end term exam. the division of marks is as follows. Assignments 40 marks, Mid - Term 20 marks, End - Term 40 marks. The labs and facilities are open through the exams and during exams it is very hectic because of submissions and completion of work. Most of the time we had to ask for Over time of the labs which was a Napoleon task! Most of the

Admission :

The entrance is a 2 level examination. The first exam happens in the month of Feb where the fist paper is on mental ability and aptitude, the second paper is a Creative Ability Test where ones drawing skills and creativity is tested. Once the results for the written exams is announced one has to appear for the situation test which happens in the month of May. The Situation test is to tests your creativity and imaginations in a constrained amount of time. Based on your written exams and Situation test you are given a rank after which one has to appear for counselling. Based on your rank you can choose the center and subject of your choice.

Faculty :

All well qualified and trained faculty member who have experience working in the industry for few years. Sometimes most of them give you a hard time on your assignments but one has to realise it is to push you harder and do your best and one learns how to deal with professors over the 4 years.

Placement Experience:

For this particular course, the placements are 100%. The number of companies visiting would be less. But every student from this course gets jobs after completing their studies. The average package would be 4 lakhs per annum. My plan is to get placed in a big company, gain experience and start my own business.

Placement Experience:

NIFT has centralised campus placement. We can sit for placement in our last year of college. NIFT placement percentage drastically reduced recently, but what you get completely depends on your quality of work. We'll probably get many options since NIFT is a prestigious institute, a large number of companies come there for recruitment. I don't have any plans yet, I'll probably get a job first and then think of how I want to go further.

The college is a top-ranked college in terms of architecture. The infrastructure of the college is at par with the standards which should be there in an architecture college. I have many fond memories of the college. The standard of teaching and placements are pretty good.
